hello, in reply to your 2 comments:

low blood pressure or take blood thinners is not related to chia seeds

yes, better to have the seeds absorp liquid substances outside the body otherwise it will do inside your stomach. 10 minutes soaked in water is sufficient prior to consumption.

2 tablespoons of chia seeds contain 69 calories, however, these same 2 tablespoons contain 20% of daily fibers and this outway this small amount of calories because the fibers make your body work to digest the food and you feel feel so you eat less. So it does make you lose weight. See for more specific info a useful datasheet on the chia seeds (compared to flax seeds):

I've eaten them for the health benefits but never for weight loss - they can be high in calories for a small amount so I don't see them as particularly 'diet' friendly, just healthy-lifestyle friendly.

don't forget to use the chia gel as a thickener in salad dressings. Works out very well!

Dunno about weight loss, but chia seeds are used in a nice vegan protein supplement Life's Basics Plant Protein Mix (the unsweetened vanilla just has pea protein, rice protein, hempseed, chia seed, and vanilla). The blend gives complete protein for humans. I assume the sweet taste it has comes from the chia- I can even mix it just with water and cocoa and it tastes fine. I mix some in with nondairy yoghurt to boost up the pitiful amount of protein in the one my local store carries... It very definitely thickens things pretty well and there are recipes on the web for making pudding with it. I've used the Life's Basics blend for that also, there's enough chia in it. I wouldn't worry about the gel it forms, no worse than any pudding. It's tasty. Well worth a try.

hi, chia seeds help you to lose weight because of their high content of fibers. Fibers make you feel full while so you eat less. Besides, chia seeds are able to absorp 9 times its own weight in water so yet another reason that make you feel full. As a food engineer I recommend you to consume especially at night because then you should eat less because your body does not burn the energy because you are sleeping. There is a webpage that I especially would like to recommend which is all about weight loss and chia seeds: www.chia-direct.com/chia_seeds_weight_loss
.htm

I agree with u too. I have been on it now since Feb. and I take 2 tbsp a day by adding 2 tsp. in each water bottle that is 1 tbsp. I take 2 water bottles that has the Chia seeds and put in refrig over night and then take them with me to work and have them finished by 3 pm. I sometimes used a water enhancer in the bottle of water for flavoring. I have lost 8 lbs and a half since I have been on spark people and counting calories and putting it down so I try to stay around 14-1800 calories in take daily. I think with everything I am doing the chia seed is helping and yes my stomach does not seem to bloat like I was. I like the regular every day that I am getting with the chia seed. Keep it up and I cannot wait to see what the results are when I get my blood work done next month.

I made the chocolate chia seed pudding too, and I thought it was pretty good, although I did add some heavy cream towards the end. Otherwise it was just too bland. I'm thinking of making it with coconut milk and pineapple for sort of a tropical twist.

I love chia seeds. I don't think there's anything special about them in terms of weight loss, but I add them too all kinds of things for the nutrition and fiber.

I tried the chia pudding recipe that's floating around the internet. I was interested in the fact that unsweetened cocoa was a key ingredient.

Chia seeds kind of provide the jelling action needed in pudding.

I wasn't a big fan of the texture, but hubby loved it. It was a thousand times healthier than any pre-packaged pudding.

I love chia seeds. Like most seeds they are nutritional powerhouses. I don't eat them specifically to lose weight, I just think they make a very tasty and healthy chocolate pudding when mixed with soy milk, stevia and cocoa powder.

They do aid digestion, so it would not surprise me if they can help some lose weight.

Yes!!! Chia seeds do help you loose weight!!! Im a proven fact!! I've always had a hard time loosing weight n mainly suffered from digestive issues, very bloated stomach and constipation, I never thought I would find something that was gonna work. Until my mother in law bought chia seeds I had never heard of them and was skeptical that those tiny lil seeds were gonna do the work.on my first day A few hours of taking them I was able to use the bathroom. It doesn't give you the runs either like other products. I had immediately noticed my stomach had shrunk and learned that my big stomach was mainly bloating Before taking chia seeds I was on a diet plan and excercise for 6 weeks and couldn't drop not 1pound until i was introduced to them I was getting ready to give up but I truly wanna thank the chia seeds and I wanna make sure I let everyone know how much it has helped me. I am 5'7 tall n started at 163lbs heavy now after taking those seeds for 2 in a half months I dropped to 153.5lbs I recommend to take em with water only for best results.

I don't eat them for weight loss reasons, but because they naturally lower cholesterol and have high amounts of the omega-3 vitamins that are so good for you. One tablespoon of chia seeds has more omega-3's than a serving of salmon. I'm not a big fan of salmon, and the omega-3 supplements are apparently poorly absorbed, so chia seeds are an easy way to get that nutrient while eating foods I like. On their own they don't have much taste, and they absorb water, so they're easy to add to soups, puddings, baked goods, salads, etc.

I've added them into smoothies. Not that impressed with the texture in those. They bring protein into the mix, but I'm not sure I buy the "hype"...and certainly not as a "tool" for losing weight!
IMO just another unusual product to create a market for and sell to people looking for "amazing" results.

Has anyone ever heard of Health Warrior Chia Bars? You can get them from Vitacost.com at a very good price. There are different flavors and they are pretty darn good. One bar has 100 calories and gets me through from lunch to dinner. I love Vitacost for lots of good healthy stuff that is reasonably priced.

At work today I mixed 1/2 liter of water, 1 Tbsp. of chia seeds and 1 packet of Crystal Light lemonade in my water bottle and let it sit for awhile. Then I shook it really well and drank it. I liked it! But it totally looked like swamp water. My co-workers were horrified. :)

They definitely curb appetite if you stir them into soups and yogurt, but check your teeth! I haven't tried the water thing yet, thanks. Also good for your heart and muscles as they have magnesium!!!

Yes they are great!! I have been taking them since Feb. I have lost 8 lbs and I am also watching my calories count . I take 2 16oz. water bottles and use 2 tsp.seeds in each bottle and put in the refrigeratorover night and take them with me when I go to work, I will use water inhancer couple of skirts into the bottles of seed and drink it slowly through out my day at work and it makes me have 4 8 oz of water a day and I drink more . I try to challege of 8 cups a day or more. They are also great for regular you - BMs and be expected more then 2 a day. It is a great way of cleansing you , I have felt more energy too. do not take any seeds before bed if u know what I mean. The package tells u to take 2 tbsp. a day thats what they recommend. I take my in water bottles and sometimes I sprinkle on my salads too. I will be getting blood work done next month so I can not wait to see what it has done health wise too. My closterole was up a little last year and thats why i thought I will do this after I was introduce by a friend of the seeds and benefits. I have also saw a show on Dr. Oz talking about it too. Hope this helps you out . Be glad to share more as the time goes on. take care.

I just bought chia seeds for the first time about two weeks ago. Wow! The nutrition! The versatility! I don't use them specifically for weight loss, but if you have a tablespoon or so they do have fiber that fills you up. I'm putting them in soups, oatmeal, pudding, salad dressing, sprinkling them on cereal, you name it.

I love chia seeds for the plant based protein plus omega-3s.

I noticed some recipes for chia pudding with lots of sweeteners. I like to add pureed berries to the pudding along with a little bit of vanilla or almond extract for this purpose. Just tonight I made some cherry-vanilla chia pudding. I used 1/4 cup chia seeds, 1 cup almond breeze, and 1.5 cups of frozen unsweetned cherries with a few drops of vanilla extract. Yum!

I came here for some advice about chia seeds and found this message. One to two tablespoons a day is recommended to start out with? How do much do you really need to eat to impact yourself nutritionally? I am not worried about the weight loss as much as the amount of protein and omega 3s I can get out of them. I eat fish but I am trying to go off of meat for the next 40 days.

Definitely NOTHING out there will be the MAGIC formula, pill, food or what not to help you lose weight. You have to find what works for you. I have found I have to switch things up at times to keep anything moving.

Quiltybird, the reason you got gas was because friendly bacteria love soluble fiber. Chia is one of the richest sources of soluble fiber, and it was fermenting in your colon in an attempt to make higher levels of friendly bacteria. The gas goes away in a few weeks after your friendly bacteria levels are restored to better levels.

Also, if you want chia seeds to inhibit your appetite, you need to consume them at least 30 minutes before a meal so they can start swelling up inside your stomach as they absorb liquids and thus filling you up before you start consuming your meal.

Uh, no. Anything is NOT possible. As much as I would love to lose 30 lbs myself by the end of next month, even, that's just not possible for a healthy human being. Period. The human body doesn't work that way.

Thanks for the Chia reminder. I had some fat-free greek yogurt this morning & I now wish I had remembered the Chia. I also like to use it in my smothies. Trader Joe's & Costco are the most economically priced. Costco especially since you get more bang for your buck.

As others have noted, Chia seeds are great additions to smoothies and oatmeal. There's also some great products that use Chia, like some of the "Lesser Evil" brand snacks. I like them because it helps me meet my protein and fiber goals, but I haven't noticed them helping me to stay full longer. I think the appetite suppressant claims are an exaggeration.

Interesting discussion , I might actually try them to pump up nutrition but I'll have to find someone who uses them who will let me had a small portion to try because I generally do not like a mushy texture.

I have added chia seeds to my diet for the omega 3s as I don't eat seafood. I love how convenient they are - just add a tablespoon to a bit of juice as I'm getting ready in the morning and by the time I'm ready to walk out the door, they're gooey enough to gulp right down.

Offer them what they secretly want and they of course immediately become panic-stricken. ~ Jack Kerouac

The big thing with chia is that they fill you up. They just help you not eat as much. RMELIDA, using the trackers here are your best option, but just remember, realistically, it is not healthy to lose more than a couple of pounds a week, unless you are doing something like the Biggest Loser show. And they are monitored. Just be careful and don't aim higher than what will keep you healthy as you lose the weight. The chia seeds will help you fill full faster, but you still need the nutrients from fruits and veggies, protein, etc.

RMELIDA - There is no magic pill or seed. You cannot realistically lose that much weight in that much time. I know you want to feel your best on your wedding day, but the best might be losing a smaller amount of weight (maybe 10-12 pounds) but doing it in a way that doesn't make you cranky and exhausted.

Work with the Sparkpeople tools, set up your goals, and work within your calorie ranges. You will be happier in the long run.

I have used them in cooking a bit. My husband can't get past the texture, but I don't mind it.

one of my friends told me to try... I barely started 2 days ago drinking the Chia seed with lots and lost of water... I am 180 lbs and i would like to lose at least 20-30 pounds before the end of July because i am getting married...
Does anyone knows if i can drink or eat of the chia seed more than normal so it can help me loose weight more.

I use to be 125-130 but after i had my daughter and all the depression strees it got worse.

I have been using chia seeds for 1 week and have lost 8 lbs. (I'm sure water but I will take it) What got me started on chia seeds is I'm allergic to fish/shellfish and needed another source for omega 3. I use 2 tablespoons to 8 oz. of liquid (like a pudding you eat with a spoon) once in the morning and 1 in the mid afternoon. I feel so much better and have a lot more energy!

I've found Chia seeds to be a great tool to help reach your weight loss goals. They're a low fat that's full of a number of important nutrients. They're loaded with fiber, Omega-3's, vitamin B's, and they're gluten free.

Thanks so much for all the input. I can say I've been drinking with chia seeds for a couple of weeks now. I have dropped a few pounds, but in addition to the seeds, I have been watching what I eat and exercising, so can't say it's the seeds that dropped the weight. I can say I feel really good, and I have been more regular (TMI?). As a woman this is a big thing!! I put them in smoothies, yogurt, and drink them with water and a drink mix (usually powerade). I haven't tried substituting them in cooking, but my husband does most of that so not sure when I will get to.

I do like them a lot though, and will keep them a part of my daily diet.

Wow! Lots of people want to talk about Chia Seeds.

I bought some. I like them in a lot of different things: extra crunch in some places, extra thickness in others. Love the nutritional benefit.

Here's what I think: it's awesome you asked and people answered!

My pet peeve is shows like John Tesh or Dr. Oz who present watered down versions of sometimes new or unsubstantiated studies as FACT. Whenever you hear something that piques your interest, do your research (yay internet) and ASK people who may have experience. Listen closely when you hear : this substance MAY help in.... They said MAY not WILL. And everyone memorize this: Correlation does not equal Causation. Think for yourselves, don't blindly follow. There are so many products that have harmed people before they were pulled from the market...

ok...climbing down from my soapbox now

Love them! There are so many creative ways to use them. Lots of great recipes online. I'm making a lot of the pudding ones. I use 1 cup of 30 or 45- cal almond milk, 1/4 cup fat free ricotta, 12 to 24g chia and sometimes add protein powder, little cocoa, 1 or 2 tbsp of organic powdered peanut butter by Just Great Stuff, stevia. Refrigerate to set for 2 hours or overnight.

Planning on making tropical dream chia pudding that someone posted on spark -- blend a banana with pineapple, add chia and refrigerate to set.

Very filling and takes in taste of whatever you mix it with.

Just tried them for first time, soaked and put in smoothie. Didn't mind the texture in that will keep trying and see if the fiber effect of fullness and better regularity happens.

I like them for the health benefits.

My favorite ways: Soaked in a cup of tea (pour 1/2 a T in bottom of mug, pour hot tea over top and mix in, let sit for a few minutes.) Or in a cold green smoothie.

I use Chia seeds. BUT this is the key and it will make you feel fuller faster at meals and eat a bit less (not a drastic get quick weight loss by anymeans but a nicer little helper!)

Do this 30-45 min before a meal
1) fill a glass full of water
2) take a tbsp of chia and put it in your mouth(do not chew or swallow)
3) fill your mouth with water and swish once and swallow
4) drink the complete glass of water.

I do this three times a day with meals. It helps boost my water consumption, keeps me regular and really does alert me when I am full while eating versus just consuming everything on my plate I am finding I am alerted to when I am done and do not continue to eat instead I get away from the table and do dishes and tidy kitchen etc. Chia expands with water. A tbsp will expand to approx 1/2 a cup volume. That can be a great helper when your a constant overeater. Best of luck to you. I do this in combination with 2 tbsp of apple cider vinegar as well :).

I just saw this message board and thought I'd add (and hopefully get some ideas). I just started putting chia seeds in my water. I add a flavor packet like chrystal light and I think I'm addicted. I was scared of the texture at first, but it's nothing now. I feel so much better and not sure about the weight loss, but these little seeds are so full of so much good stuff, I know I'm doing a good thing for my body using them.

So I saw below that someone grows them and adds to salads. I was wondering if this could be done, sort of like alfalfa sprouts. Now I'm going to have to try it.

Anyone have any other ideas for these little gems? I also heard soaking a tblspn in water then replacing eggs with the soaked mixture in cakes or breads. I make muffins sometimes so I'm going to have to try this.

Look forward to some good ideas...

I just got the book The Aztec Diet by Bob Arnot which is based on Chia seeds and I guess just clean food along with it. I've read great reviews on it and I'm excited to try it! Today is my first day on the actual diet. I've been eating 4 Tbs a day for a week or so in greek yogurt and I feel great. It gives me energy and really does take the edge off my hunger.
I'll keep ya posted!

I have been using chia seed for about a month. Initially I didn't soak them, just put through my yogurt with fruit for breakfast but read that much better to soak first, so I do that now, took me a while to get my head around the texture but now I love them. Like to soak 1 tbsp with 4oz cranberry juice and 16oz water and just sip on it during the morning. Any juice will work. I start the day with 2tbsp soaked and mix in a non fat yogurt with some fruit. I am taking them for fibre and omega 3. My nails have started to grow, they were so weak and split, I also think my skin looks better. No weight loss but my body is changing for the better, I am making more sensible food choices and exercising more. I buy the seed at whole foods from the bulk bin. It costs around $5 for 8oz, trader joes has it pre-packed, in my store it is beside the oatmeal. I do find it takes the edge off my appetite. I am going to try the dessert recipes. Drink lots of water. Hope this helps

I've heard of them but never heard about eating them until I saw this thread. I always thought they were just for that chi chi chia pets, lol. I don't eat oatmeal, cereal or anything jelly like, so I guess they wouldn't work for me, since I don't like that kind of consistency in my foods.

I've heard of them, but not tried them. I used to have flax, but would always forget about them and they would go rancid. Maybe I'll try chia seeds to add some more nutritional value to oatmeal, smoothies and others things.

I've made chia pudding. Mix well in a bowl ... 1 cup coconut milk, quarter cup of chia seeds, & one eighth cup agave. Put in fridge & allow the chia seeds to absorb the milk for about 2 hours. No cooking involved, very healthy, & keeps you regular.

I made a smoothie with them a while back. Guess I used too much since it was more like colored slush. Yucky

Yes, I use Chia seeds. Not so much for feeling more full but the nutritional value in them. I will sprinkle Chias on salads and cereals. I also soak them in liquid and add them to ground raw meats or turkey. Really keeps it moist. They are great for thickening soups and sauces.

Since using them I have been able to discontinue medication for high cholesterol. This makes me really happy.

I also read that sprouting them and using the greens it produces is also great in salads. I will try this next week .

It's an easy way to add fiber without a lot of carbs or sugar. If you are a person who feels full after fiber, then I guess it helps with your appetite. Really, they're not magic, just seeds. Trader Joe's sells them now. I like them for the fiber and Omega 3s. I just eat them right away in a smoothie or yogurt. I don't usually let them soak and get slimy. You can try it and see if it's right for you and your dietary goals.

I have not personally found any to buy, but I had a coworker who brought them to work and would sprinkle them on salads or really just about anything. Like others have said, my coworker used them for omega 3s, fiber, and their other health benefits.

I use them for a little bit of fiber and omega oil benefits, and they are much more convenient for me than flax seeds. That said, I don't find they fill me up for one minute more than if I didn't use them.

I did a little research to see if there's been any studies on this.

http://img2.tapuz.co.il/forums/1_156768881.pdf
This article suggests that chia seeds do not promote weight loss in overweight adults.

http://www.hindawi.com/journals/jobes/2011/297315/
This one (section 2.1.6) says that they may be an effective appetite suppressant, but has not been proven safe for long term use, nor does it support weight loss.

Basically there's no scientific evidence that it's beneficial. It sounds like another fad to me.

I have Chia seeds daily. Because they plump up, they do help you feel fuller (I feel fuller after breakfast because that's when I eat them and stay that way longer). I don't use them as an appetite suppressant (nothing suppresses my appetite) or weight loss enhancement (don't think anything really works)...but the seeds have health value in my opinion.

I eat a cereal every morning which is chia seeds, hemp seeds and buckwheat. The seeds do make a sort of gel after you add liquid, which thickens up the cereal. I now eat it with oatmeal (added after the oatmeal is cooked), because I get so hungry before lunch. Even with the oatmeal, I usually eat breakfast at 7 and I'm starving at 10, so I need to eat a snack.

I feel the cereal has many health benefits, but appetite suppression is not one of them.

Another chia seed fan here! I read about them in Born to Run. Bob's Red Mill now packages Chia Seeds, so if there is a place near you that carries that line of products (Ocean State Job Lot in my small town) or Bob's has a website with the same prices.
I do find I have more even energy throughout the day - to echo what a PP says, I do not want to know if this is a placebo effect.
This website: http://mychiaseeds.com/Articles/Top10ChiaBenefits.html had some interesting uses, including using chia in baking, which I will try. I have currently had them in smoothies, in my slads, in stir-fry and in oatmeal. I once tried them just soaked in water overnight and that was not for me ... tasted a bit slimy, but mixed with heartier foods I do not notice them at all.

Yes I was taking 1 tbsp every day with water I did not find any difference in my appetite. I saw it on Dr. Oz.

Personally, I think telling someone to find a new doctor just because the doctor recommended a food is quite dramatic.... Chia seeds are an excellent source of fats and fiber. And as we all know, fiber does fill us up. However, chia seeds are not necessary for a healthy diet, just as meat is not necessary, and just as flax meal isn't necessary. We wouldn't bash a doctor for recommending flax, so why bash a doctor or recommending chia(unless the doctor was pushing a sale on his/her client)? If you can afford chia seeds, and if you like the taste and want to buy them, then there is no problem with purchasing them. However, they are not a miracle food. I personally do eat chia from time to time, but I also eat flax meal. Find what works for you within your budget.

I live in a small town too but we have a small nutrition store. However, I don't like swallowing pills....if I did not have access to the actual seeds I would order them online. I pay $20 for a jar of Chia seeds.

My New Year's Resolution is to laugh more....because it feels sooooooo good.

I have never tried them, but I saw that Walgreens had them in pill form. Has anyone tried that. I live in a small town and one don't have a health food store and the stores we do have don't even have fresh watercress or rosemary or basil....so I thought maybe the pills would be good. Thats how I get my flaxseed.

Whether it be real or placebo, I eat 1 tbsp of chia seeds with my steel cut oats every morning and I am full WAY longer since I added the chia seeds. I have noticed quite a drastic shift in my appetite after adding them to my diet.

It might be placebo, BUT you must admit that the seeds do expand with the water creating more bulk volume (maybe giving the sensation that you've eaten more?) Also, they're really just a fibre, protein, and fat. All stuff that burns slower than sugars and simple carbs.

If it's placebo, I don't wanna know. It's working for me: controlling my appetite and adding some healthy nutrition to my diet.

No......they have health benefits, as do many seeds. There are NO magic pills OR seeds!!!

I try to hold fast to the truth that a full and thankful heart cannot entertain great conceits. When brimming with gratitude, one's heartbeat must surely result in outgoing love, the finest emotion that we can ever know. AS BILL SEES IT
