When I was a kid, avacados were a luxury item in my house. Whenever we had one, we'd take the pit, put toothpicks into it (point down, tooth picks around the circumfance, maybe four or five) and prop the toothpicks on a glass of water.
The pit would be mostly underwater, but not completely submerged. We often got them to sprout. I don't think one ever survived the transplant to earth, but that may have been because we didn't know how to do it.
I'm in the northeast, so I doubt we could ever bring one to fruit bearing, but it was a fun project to sprout the pits.
