Love avocados! And it's a healthy fat, so as long as you can fit it into your daily calorie range you're good.

I just read recently that you can ripen an avocado by putting it in a paper bag with a banana, and it will be ready to eat in 24 hours. Apparently the banana gives off something that helps it ripen. Haven't tried it yet, but if it works it means you don't have to wait for the ones in the store to be "just right" in order to buy them.

I will eat that delicious fruit every day if it were not as fatty as it is. I like to eat one or three atleast a week.

Keep a smile on your face and laughter in your heart.- Michelle Martinez

Thanks, VICKIA0222. A little experimentation is in order here...

When I was a kid, avacados were a luxury item in my house. Whenever we had one, we'd take the pit, put toothpicks into it (point down, tooth picks around the circumfance, maybe four or five) and prop the toothpicks on a glass of water.

The pit would be mostly underwater, but not completely submerged. We often got them to sprout. I don't think one ever survived the transplant to earth, but that may have been because we didn't know how to do it.

I'm in the northeast, so I doubt we could ever bring one to fruit bearing, but it was a fun project to sprout the pits.

I had never tried avocados before joining SparkPeople, and now they are a regular part of my grocery run. Thank you for growing them for me!

Avocados require a warm climate (California, Florida, etc), however older established trees can stand up to cold nights but not freezing temps. They have roots just below the surface so they need a soaking not deep watering and do require fertilizer twice a year. I have never seen them grown in a pot, just remember they can grow to well over 30' and they also like a second tree near them. But who knows, plant one in a pot and give it a whirl. Good luck.

What is the best climate for avocado trees? What kind of care do they need? Could I grow one in a pot?

Having fun with your child is what it's all about. Even if they don't sprout, just planting them with him or her is the most important thing.

my 5 y.o. and i just planted two avocado seeds we've been saving for today. I'm not sure when they will sprout (if ever) and I'm sure that they won't ever bear fruit here in the DC area. But we had fun, and I hope you do too!

My husband and I have 2 acres of avocado trees. It is now harvest time. Today is day two with about 5 weeks to go. We work at least 6 hours per day on this. Great exercise!
