Looking back, I've always been heavy, but I grew up on the south where everyone was heavy. I was active and very fit, so it was never an issue. When I had my kids I developed HBP and have had trouble managing it due to the weight. I consulted a nutritionist and got up to get moving. I don't want to be skinny I just need to be healthy. I CAN do this.

When I was a kid I was a little heavy and was teased. When I look back at the pictures, however, I wasn't as fat as I let others make me think I was. Throughout my life I have had fat years and lean years. Feast or famine is not a good way to live. My goal is to get off this yo-yo and live a healthy life from here on.

I was a skinny kid but when I started puberty the pounds started and little by little I grew both taller and wider. However I eventually stopped getting taller but the horizontal growth continued throughout my life.

No. Even after I had my twins, I was slim. But when I moved cross country and got into a motorcycle accident, the pounds started creeping up. Now I have to work 3 times as hard as I once did to take the weight off. I'll get there though.

I was slender until about age 25 and then started gaining weight year-by-year because I stopped caring about what I ate and also stopped moving my body.

No. Got to 152 very very gradually between about age 45 and now 51. For a 5'4" person, that does not sit well. I really did not pay attention to exercise or regular eating. I eat well but I do not eat frequently. .. Well, now I do! I feel better... so much better.
I've always been large, and after elementary school that became definitely overweight. I know that little kids can be unhealthy, but I also know that not every child is supposed to be skinny, and childhood body sizes fluctuate widely before they even out, often on their own. The "fat kid" gets skinny just by growing up and not out, the "skinny kid" packs on the pounds when hormones shift and settle.
I really want my kids to grow up healthy, but not obsessed with appearance, even if that means they are round little ones. I'm trying to let them self regulate by choosing how much they eat of the balanced healthy meals available and encouraging them to play vigorously. So hopefully they won't lose touch with their natural body cues on nutrition.
At what point do I need to take my children's weight and size into considerations when judging their health? And at what point is a heavy kid considered unhealthy? I'm not dealing with this right now--my older child is only 3--but looking back at my own childhood--always heavy, though not obese, and eventually growing into overweight--I can't see when parental intervention would have been right.

Ever since I was about 4 and my mom fed me stuff in portions that were well above what I should have eaten for my body frame/weight/height.
I have had times where I wasn't obese or just on the brink of being in my upper weight range, but it never lasted for too long. Bad habits crept back up!
Hopefully now is the time for permanent lifestyle change.

No! I was actually UNDERweight to the point of concern when I was in middle and high school.
I know exactly what I weighed, since I was on the wrestling team- and we had to "make weight". Unlike most grapplers, I was always way under my 68 pound weight class mark. I only weighed 56 pounds in 8th grade! Even in high school, I was tiny. At graduation in 1977, I weighed 109 pounds (4ft, 11in tall).
In college, I got a GUT when I learned to drink beer.. and except for a weight loss in 1985, when I got down to 183, I've been ballooning most of my adult life.
At Christmas past (2009), I was at my 2nd most heavy state- 318 lbs...
But today, I weighed in at 296! Can't wait til it starts to become noticeable to my friends... hopefully within another month or so!
YES I HAVE SINCE I WAS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL BUT I AM FIXING THAT PROBLEM NOW.

I was always chunky as a kid. I thinned out in my teens and my early 20's. I've yo-yo'd ever since then and just recently I gained most of my weight and I just can't seem to lose it.

I've always been overweight. The last time I was "skinny", I was 7 years old. I weighed 126lbs at age 10. It just went up from there. I'm at my heaviest now, age 26, I weighed 228 on 1/14/10. Today I'm 221. I lost 7lbs before I found SP. That's enough for me to know it works & I can really do this!

I was thin until the last 5 years. I moved away from family to help take care of my in laws and slowly started to gain weight. Then i found out i have an under active Thyroid. So it has been a battle of losing a few pounds just to gain it all back and sometimes more.

I have never been thin. I still remember how my mom yelled and demeaned me at the clothing store for being so fat. I was 8. The smallest I have ever been was a size 14 my junior year of HS. By my senior year, I was back up to an 18. This is the second time I have really taken matters into my own hands to really loose weight.

yes i have always been overweight and much bigger than my peers. at 16, i was 82kg and its made me very self conscious. i look older than my age and people are always calling me "Madam" (a term of repect for older women in my country) its really affected me and at a point, i became introverted and reclusive. up til today, i don't like crowds and i dont feel comfortable amongst strangers.
luckily for me though, where I'm from being a voluptuous woman isn't a bad thing. i'm comfortable with how i look and i try to dress well allways.
what i'm more concerned about right now is my health. i wouldnt like to have a heart attack or diabetes or any other such condition. i'm prepared to do all it takes to live healthy and stay healthy.

Yes, definitely.
When I was 7 years old, I weighed 80 pounds (my 12 year old daughter weighs 80 pounds!)
When I was 9 years old I weighed around 100.
When I was 11 years old I was 140, but was put on my first real diet, and got down to 120 for a little while.
At 13 I was about 150. Between ages 13 and 16 I yo-yo dieted and was between 140 and 155.
By my senior year, age 17, I got burned out and stressed, gave up dieting and got up to 175-180, and stayed that way my first few years of college. My second year of college, I exercised a lot in the campus gym, and got down to about 160, still over but not as bad. I also started to like exercise just for the fun of it, and joined a volleyball team just for fun.
When I was 22, I still was about 160-165. I decided I didn't want to be everyone's pudgy best friend anymore and lost 35 pounds that year- all the way down to 130. I was actually "thin" for the first time in my life that I could remember! I started seriously dating for the very first time, too.
Since then, my adult weight has ranged from 130 to 185, and 190 when pregnant. I am relatively short, 5'4. Looking back on how heavy I was in childhood I realized I could have been much worse, it was those frequent bouts of dieting and exercise, every other year, that prevented me from becoming seriously obese.

I remember second grade and my mom, per my doctor's request, said I had to go on a diet. Tears streamed down my face when my mom told me I couldn't have any chips while my brothers and sisters could eat what they wanted. Heartbroken and mad I yelled at my mom that I couldn't wait to be grown up so I could eat what I wanted. Apparently I took that to heart and have eaten everything I wanted since college. Though I was athletic through the end of college, I always was on the heavy side. Then I just got fat! Having a child didn't help. Like all of you, I am going to change that now, once and for all!

No... In high school I was average to on the skinnier side. In college I put on maybe 10 lbs (so I wasn't wearing a bikini, but I was still fit).
It was moving in with my hubby & then having two kids 2 years apart that put most of my weight on.

No didn't start gaining weight till I got on birth control many many years ago, but was never really that overweight will I had my first child 21 years ago. Never lost all of what I gained with her, then got pregnant with my son. I was even heavier after him and have just never lost it. That has been 19 years. I am really trying to get hold of it now. Would like to see 50 years old as a new woman! I am 47 now, I have 3 years to accomplish my goals.

I was a very tiny person for many years. After I got home from having my first child, I weighed 108. I started slowly gaining weight in my mid-twenties. At that time I was working in an office and eating off of the lunch truck. I also sat most of the day. By the time I hit my 30s, my weight had climbed to a high of 160. I went on a liquid diet that my doctor suggested and my weight went down to 130. My weight quickly went back up, I got pregnant again, and my weight has yo-yo'd from that point to the 200s many times since then. I no longer work in an office and I have exercised for years(the last 3 with a trainer), but if I do not track my food the weight packs on quickly.

Technically never. Have I thought I was? Hell yeah. I've been underweight and still thought I was overweight.
Now, although I want to see the lbs go down, I also want to decrease my actual body fat percentage to a healthier level.

No, I was skinny as a young kid, obese at 10, thin as a teenager, and up and down since
I am only one; but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; I will not refuse to do the something I can do.

Yes and no. I've always felt that I needed to lose weight, but right now I'd kill to be at my pre-pregnancy weight. Looking back on pictures from before my pregnancy, I was nowhere near as big as I thought I was. I wasn't the healthiest, though, so that is something I've always needed to work on. I'm a very picky eater and have a tendency to get lazy in the kitchen.

Yes. As far back as I can remember. Grade school was the biginning of my knowing I was overwieght because the kids made fun of me. That to was the start of my low self-esteem. When I graduated high school I was 180 lbs. Since then I have been between 50-70lbs overweight. I am tired of being obese and AM going to do my best to change that. Now at 44 yrs old I am 65lbs over weight.

I have always struggled with my weight and can remember having to shop in the "pretty plus" section of sears when I was 10-12 yr old...

No, I was thin until I had my second baby. I've fought with my weight since then -- 20 years now!
On World Vegetarian Day, most people aren't willing to trade in their turkey for tofurkey. Luckily, you can still reap the benefits of vegetarianism by trying flexitarianism on for size.
Beets are an underrated vegetable. They're sweet and flavorful. If you think you don't like them, try them in this recipe. Roasting brings out the beets' natural sweetness, and the feta offers a nice, salty contrast. TIP: Buy your beets with the greens still attached--it's great way to check for freshness and the greens can be used for another recipe.
