I had surprise company last weekend and reached for the can of sloppy joe for dinner. I had defrosted ground turkey for burgers and needed to stretch it for more mouths. So I added vegetables - onions, celery, mushrooms and spinach. I then stretched it further by adding chopped tomatoes (with no salt added). The results was delicious and with a oven fried potatoes & salad everyone was satisfied and I cut the calorie intake, as well as sodium. The added bonus - it toned down the tangy taste.
My tavern recipe is really easy......and VERY tasty!
ground hamburger (we use venison) pepper diced onion (I sometimes will just use onion powder) ketchup (I don't measure, I just squirt some in) mustard (again I don't measure) stir and simmer for 10 minutes and serve
I have even served on big lettuce leafs before to help cut out carbs
This one of the best I`ve eaten and it came from SP user ALICIABH....I tweaked a bit 1lb lean ground round pinch of salt 1/2 C. chopped onion 1 1/3 T.brown sugar 1 1/3 T yellow mustard 1 1/3 T vinegar 1 1/3 T worchestershire
cook & crumble ground beef with salt & onion. Drain any grease. Thoroughlym ix the rest of the ingredients in a sauce pan and heat. Add meat and simmer for about an hour, stirring occasionally. Serve on buns.

Lately I've been craving a really good sloppy joe. I don't really like the canned stuff because it is so tangy. I prefer more of a slightly sweet but mostly creamy and savory sloppy joe. I thought my mom made them with tomato and cream of mushroom soups, but I tried and it wasn't the same. Anyone have a good recipe?
