emoticon Great topic everyone...My husband is a fry everything kind of eater. He wants over fried (almost burnt) pork chops at least twice a week and fried hamburgers (not baked in the oven) and fried thick sliced bologna all served with deep fried potatoes or microwave baked potatoes, fried bacon and eggs, occasionally some fried fish and a daily bag of potato chips and lots of salt on everything. No veggies please except for an occasional (once a week) salad and no chicken ever. That's almost all he ever eats and at 70 he's still as skinny as a rail with no health issues like cholesterol, blood pressure or diabetes. His yearly physicals come back with numbers ranging the same as when he was in his twenties. His weight is still the same as then also. I have learned to cook his food separate from mine because when I ate what he ate I gained up to 225lbs. Now choosing to eat what I know is healthy and makes me feel good for myself I have gone back down to 145. I am 60 and feel I can comfortably loose another 10 lbs without it affecting how I look too much. I have the flabby quick weight loss skin and am exercising in hopes it will disappear in time.

To me HEALTH means Energy. Stamina. Flexibilty. A relatively pain free body. Enjoying healthy food.

You guys think you have it bad -- my Hubby's a professional Chef!!! While everything he makes is incredibly delicious, it's also very fattening. However, he is very supportive of me and will alter recipes when cooking for me. He even bought a kitchen scale and weighs out portions for me. In our household, it's actually ME who doesn't like a lot of stuff; but he's learned what I DO like and makes sure to incorporate those items as much as possible. :-)

My husband and I found the joys of freezer taquitos from this recipe/website.

We've tried it with flour toritllas, as well as a low carb tortilla and both worked wonderfully. It takes a little time to make but we were able to get 24 taquitos out of it, which is 6 meals for us. Then just pop a couple out of the freezer and it makes a super fast meal. The main thing is that when we're using healthy tortillas it makes my husband feel like he's eating junky food but it's cheap and healthy. Just make sure to find the cheese on sale.

Sweet Potato fries can be homemade...Preheat the oven to 450 degrees....wash the potatoes, cut the ends off and leave the skin on for more fiber or peel whatever you prefer...slice ...large slices about 3/4 inch thick...put them in a bowl and coat with olive oil lightly.......place them on a baking sheet spread them out so they don't touch each other and bake for 15 minutes, flip them and cook for another 10 minutes or until crispy and brown...sprinkle them with cinnamon and some ground pepper....

If you cut them smaller then cook them for less time ...10 minutes for the first side and 8 for the second side for thinner fries

You can also but Alexia Brand Sweet Potato fries @Walmart...the Chipolte are spicy and delicious and bake them for 18 minutes......

i gotta stick with my goal. i can see my way through this this and i will succeed.

I am so glad I found this topic. This is a major issue for me with my husband. I really like the idea of Pork suggestions. I have not gotten him to eat the sweet potato fries yet but we will see. Great ideas!

Great ideas ,Sunshine. Thank you! I didn't know about the rye bread.... very interesting. I like rye bread but never seem to get any but I'll definitely put it on my list. I've had the portabello burgers before and they're very good. Hubby wouldn't touch it, but it sounds good to me! thanks again for sharing your ideas.

Flank steak, eye of round, and top sirloin are extra lean with less than 4 grams of saturated fat per serving.

For you ....just stick with a 4 ounce portion...protein can keep you full longer and burn more calories during digestion. Add chopped onion to the ground meat to stretch. Maybe try Sweet Potato fries.....Alexia Sweet Potatoes are good and have less fat. The spicy ones are very tasty.

Pork offers plenty of protein without too much fat, if you know what type to buy. Look for tenderloin, top loin, rib chops, sirloin steak, or shoulder blade steaks. Broil a center cut pork chop 8 minutes each side....good with those sweet potato fries....

Rye Bread is better than any other kind of bread because of the way sugars are absorbed....
For some reason (that scientists are still looking into), the sugars in rye flour are absorbed into your bloodstream much more slowly. This makes rye bread a great choice for people with diabetes and dieters, because their blood sugars won't peak and crash (a.k.a. the effects of white bread, wheat bread)
Pure rye bread contains only rye flour, without any wheat. Toast it up!


A Portobello mushroom has more potassium than a banana. Foods rich in potassium help maintain normal heart rhythm...Maybe try Baked Portabella Pizza
2 large portabella mushroom, stem removed
1 tablespoon spaghetti sauce, pizza sauce or tomato sauce each one
1 tsp. of Romano or Parm Cheese
1/2 cup mozzarella cheese
1/2 tablespoon sliced black olives, optional
1 slice of red onion, chopped small
1 clove garlic, chopped or minced
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
Place the mushroom on a Pam Olive Oil sprayed baking sheet, and fill the cavity of the portabella with the minced garlic, then add the Parm or Romano cheese, raw onion, mozzarella and spread sauce in the cup of the cap. Top with Parm or Romano cheese
Bake for an additional 25 minutes, or until cheese is melted and golden. These are soooo good and sooo easy.


You can also make a Portabella Burger in less than 10 minutes...they are really juicy...

Portabella Burger
Cut stem and chop stem only
SAUTE Mushroom cap 3 minutes with cavity side down
Turn over and stuff with Shredded Mozzarella
Return chopped stem to mushroom cap with other ingredients
Chopped tomato
1 clove of minced garlic
chopped red onion
Cover and saute another 3 minutes
Top with Kraft Horseradish Sauce 1 tbsp.
Serve on Rye bread toasted

Your hubby may also like this

Lasagna
Instead of using noodles, use eggplant slices. You can par boil them for a minute remove and start to layer. Ricotta cheese is low fat, has omega 3's for your brain and heart, calcium and protein. Add green bell pepper, chopped onion, and olives as you layer with some ricotta, parm, and tomato sauce. Yummy!

My hubby is the same way. He'll eat green beans or corn and that's about the extent of vegetables. Pizza, mac and cheese, fried potatoes and sausage...it really is challenging to cook healthy for me when he wants the other 'stuff'. I do like the idea of making your own little pizza with the tortilla shell...I'll try that. Most of the time I cook him what he wants and I end up eating a salad. If he has a burger or chicken, I'll have the salad and cut up half a burger and top it on my salad....if chicken, I'll use the breast meat. I don't even buy it with the skin on anymore and he's okay with that ( as long as I dredge it in egg and bread crumbs! LOL) ....I leave a plain one for me.
It's nice to know other people have the same challenge. Thanks for sharing.

That is a big help. He has high blood pressure but, doesn't like healthy food, he hates when I put salt in our food but, I told him to look at the box he's eating out of. They put more in their food than I do ours. Still it is a challenge . Thanks again

My ex-husband was the same way. Eventually I just had to put my foot down and started to make things instead of buying stuff from a box (his favorite things were frozen lasagna and frozen egg rolls). I told him it was to save money and he bought it, for the most part. It really did not take long to cook things like burgers, pizza, and pasta, and I would add a salad for me. I was able to use good ingredients and better able to control my portions. He also finally got into it and started to help with the cooking.

For example, his favorite pizza was pepperoni and sausage. So I got a premade crust (wheat), and did the same pizza, just added diced tomatoes, bell peppers, and red onion. Using italian chicken sausage and deli style pepperoni (thick cut, and diced up into small pieces, which gives the illusion of having more than there actually is). I'd also use lower fat (not fat free) cheeses. You can use less cheese but get as much flavor by using more parmesan and less mozzarella.

Add a salad or another vegetable for a side and you are set. He can eat the rest.

My husband loves hamburgers, French fries, mac and cheese, bread, pizza from a box, in fact that is how he likes his food out of a box. I on the other hand am trying to get rid of my weight, ( I am not losing it I have no intention of ever finding it again). How can I cook for him and me without spending a fortune on groceries and spending hours in the kitchen.

Anyone have this problem? Any suggestions is greatly appreciated
