You know, maybe you could actually go to the schools and post a flyer about needing in home care. I know when I was in school last year they had a corkboard for student life. People usually post anything from jobs to different activities going on. I wouldn't think one person would mind if you posted it.

I hope the best for you and your sister!

Thanks for the suggestion Nicole. Unfortunately we don't have a local paper in our area. I've tried using care.com, and even emailing some of the schools around here that train CNAs. We don't require a CNA for this, but because of her complete dependence it's very important that we trust the person. They are alone with her for sometimes long stretches of time. We are entrusting them with our house, my sister, my dogs. Unfortunately none of the schools or universities are answering.

Maybe what you could do is put an ad in the local paper and mention you will have back ground checks. It will weed out a lot of not so nice people. I am a C.N.A. and that is how I found a second job, taking care of an elderly man. You could even put in the ad C.N.A. experience preferred. But I would recommended you getting a background check on the person, because you just never know. When my dad rents out his apartments he always goes to the police station and gets a background check for free. Hope this helps! Good luck!

Mash, I'm not sure what you mean. Help for me would be help for my sister. However it has to be qualified help. Essentially because there is no one who is qualified to care for her (her county case manager told me that yesterday), she is with me nearly all the time. I don't need help dealing with the stress, I need time away from her sometimes.

Maybe you could ask for some help for yourself, instead of just for your sister. It might make it easier for you to deal with some of the stress you're facing.

Our local social services is pretty much utterly useless. Their idea of helping is sending a new caregiver for her everyday. That isn't safe in the least for her. She is severely multiply impaired, medically fragile, has more than 30 seizures a day, as well as several other things that happen with her. I want to have an outside job so I can interact with other people. Having a new caregiver everyday that I have to watch makes the point of having a caregiver moot. If I have to be there anyway, I may as well be the caregiver. Their idea of a safe day program is sending a van with 1 driver to pick up 7-10 people with those in wheelchairs in the back alone (and because my sister has seizures she can't ever be alone!), then leaving everyone in the van unattended in an unsafe neighborhood while they take everyone in one at a time.
We have a funding source to pay for caregivers but can't find a caregiver. I've done dozens of interviews and have even checked the references and offered the position to several people. They accept, then never show up without a reason why.

Contact social services in your area. They should be able to help find your sister the care that she needs.

I have guardianship of my severely multiply impaired adult sister. She lives with me and our mom. I've had more difficulty finding a reliable caregiver for her than I have ever had with anything. I don't know where else to look. I've tried local colleges and universities, local for profit training centers, care.com, basically everything except Craigslist which I'm loathe to do. Does anyone have any suggestions? I've posted on Facebook, asked everyone I know. Agencies are out of the question due to cost. I have to leave a job I really enjoy to care for her. I would like to find someone reliable that she enjoys, but I'm beginning to think that's impossible.
