How does everyone find time to work out? |

I break mine up. I walk 20 to 30 min every morning before work. My goal is to have 3,500 to 4,000 steps in before I sit at my desk. Then at lunch, when I don't have the trainer in the eve, I go to the gym and work out for 40 minutes. On Mon and Thur eves I have hired a personal trainer for strength training. I am on session 7 out of 20. Then I will do strength training on my own. At night, if it's nice, I play outside with my son, sometimes take a walk...or I walk circles in my living room while watching tv. I try not to hit the pillow until I am over 10,000 steps. For the first time I am sticking with it. I didn't start out this way. I started walking 10 to 15 min per week! But, 6 weeks later I am up the above schedule! Never thought it would happen!

I would also have to say the Jillian Michaels videos are great!! My 3 year old likes to "try" and do these with me. They are a great way to promote fitness with the kids as well!

I have some 20 minutes workout DVDS. I get up ahead of the kids and get in a quick workout. I do another one after the kids go to bed. Since they are so short I fit two in and get a great workout. I use the 30 day Shred DVDS. I really work up a sweat in a short time. I also play with kids in the yard in the afternoons. Chasing a ball around with a 3 and 4 year old is really great work. Finally, I volunteer to walk the dog. While my hubby puts the kids in the bathtub, I take the dog for a nice walk.

Get everyone involved and make it fun!!!! Find that time in your schedule that you would watch TV or when you are most inactive and slot in a work out, a walk and game with your family... My husband and I decided this past winter to become more active and now we never watch TV. We joined a gym together, although we have very different fitness goals, it works really well to have a partner join with you. The kids are enrolled too and they love to go with us. So everyone wins. We plan gym time for right after an early dinner, from 6/6:30-7:30/8. The kids get ready for bed and are asleep in no time, and there is no TV on anymore in the evenings. I am so happy we did this together.
My daily goal is 10 min per day, however I expect to exceed that each and every day. This is to ensure that I become committed to my goal, as I get more and more used to thinking about and planning for my next daily activity, until daily exercise becomes a natural rhythm for me.

Hmmm I have been exercising at night after the kids go to bed. A lot of people are saying they get up before the kids in the morning.. I might have to start doing that. It might be better than what I am doing cause some nights I am just too tired to do anything...

I work out at the Y while my 4 kids are in programs there. My girls take dance classes and all of them are in swim classes now and then. The littlest ones get to play in the child watch room if what we are there for isn't something they are involved in. There is no guilt for me this way, because they all have gotten to love going to the Y. Usually my husband will play with them in the gym if he is there, and they love that. The little ones even love the childwatch room because there are "new" toys and friends there. My two year old especially loves that they let him color with markers, which doesn't happen much at home! The indoor walking track is also stroller friendly. The membership cost was initially a strain on our budget, but I'm glad we made a way to work it out. The whole family is benefitting!

While at work, I try to do my yoga, walking in place, and toning with my stretchy bands. Its quiet in the early mornings. When I practice my breathing and center myself I do so much better. My mantra used to be quiet and still now its quiet and movement.

During the week, I get up early and do a workout DVD each morning. Three evenings a week, I also do a short (15 min or so) workout after the youngest children are in bed. On the weekends, sometimes I get up early to work out. If I sleep in, then I let the children work out with me. They have fun, I have fun, and even if we don't do the exercises properly we're all moving around. My youngest daughter now says to me, "Come on Mummy, let's exercise!"

I'm trying to be better at this...I've started playing with my kids when they play..jump rope, pretending the sidewalk is a stepper, or going for walks around the playground as they play. We have also moved the elliptical into the living room so it might be easier to mindlessly exercise while watching TV instead of mindlessly snacking !!

When we were raising our kids we also had problems finding time. Now I have the time and am now working on getting rid of 40 excess lbs and getting healthy. Fact is, I know I could have done better and recommend that folks do their best to NOT use raising kids or anything else as an excuse. Had I only watched my caloric intake I could have maintained my weight and some of my health. If I would have added just 20 minutes every other day of ST, I should have been able to even increase my health. So the point is, don't find excuses for NOT being able to eat right or be active. Eating right is really very simple and finding a few minutes per day to be active is also not all that hard. You may have to be flexible, but it still isn't that hard. I would just recommend to NOT be overly aggressive and trying to get 2-3 hrs every other day or whatever. Just take it slow and easy until you can manage more time to do more. But just think, If after the kids leave the roost, you have maintained your health and weight or even just added 10-20 lbs, that's no big deal and you'll be back in shape in no time. But if you just give in, eat stupid, and check out of life for 20 years, you just may have 100-200 lbs to get rid of, and that is NO easy journey. So find the time and keep the faith.
I question, therefore I think; I think, therefore I am; ........ I think? Life is tough, but it is tougher if you are stupid. ;-) John Wayne We can always find reasons to quit or not do what is needed to maintain a healthy and fit lifestyle. The trick is to fight this tendency. NOW SHUT UP AND SWEAT. TODAY: It's as good as any day, and better than tomorrow.

I am just getting started. I am a single mom with 3 kids and a full time job and a small pt job. I am figuring out quickly that I have to be creative. So the last few days I have been gettin up a little earlier and doing a short workout and before I go to bed I do another short work out. Also at work on any breaks that I have I have been going for walks. Now keeping up with this on a regular basis is gonna be the key.

On nights I don't have to work, I run when my husband gets home from work. One day a week I use the elliptical at gymnastics while my daughter is in class. The rest of the days I do dvd's at home. Sometimes my kids are playing and sometimes they will try to do them with me (they are 2 & 4)

I work full time and attend college, and my husband also works full time...so we're pretty busy to begin with. My son is almost 3, and sometimes I just exercise with him. I may set him up with some crayons and construction paper or some cars or legos, and then I just go for it. Often he'll come by me and mimic me a little, and I'll encourage him to try exercising with me. He thinks it's hilarious to try to do the elliptical, too. Other days I will exercise after he's gone to bed, and there are also 2 days/week that he is at preschool and I sometimes don't have work those 2 days (I mostly do nights, and diff. schedules every week). Those are the days when I get the biggest, best workouts in. Another alternate is to take him for a walk. Either we go for a leisurely stroll with him walking, just to get moving, or he'll get in the stroller so I can make it a bit more of a workout.

I am learning to MAKE time for exercising. I have a 5 month old so during the day is impossible...plus I am a full time working momma...I get an hour for lunch so I starting walking around the city (with a route planned) and go. And I just started making time to go after I put my little man in bed at 8. As long as I leave the house by 8..i can get in a 45 minute workout and be home between 9:15 and 9:30.

Your friend just called and says she wants to have lunch/dinner with you, or go see a movie. What do you do? You frantically think of a way to make it happen and then you do. It's the same way with exercise. We all have the same amount of time every day. You have to make it because it's never going to "just happen". I'm a self-employed single mother of one. I know about having a lot to do.

This is so tough! I'm a mom of two, with a hubby who works at minimum 55 hours a week, and I'm trying to get my own business of the ground...so I can definitely relate. I find that I actually have to pencil workout sessions into my calendar, sometimes in the morning early (if it's a shorter workout), sometimes in the afternoon...it's a priority for me, so I fit it in. Remember to think of that time as time to take care of yourself...it IS important!

You are all inspirations! Thank you. I've omly got three teenagers and my wife does most of the effort but i still struggle daily to carve time for myself out of the work day... I'm trying the 5am setup right now.. It's really tough but wow, the energy level gained for the rest of the day is just amazing!

With young children it can be very difficult. Try getting up just 15 minutes earlier (when they're still sleeping) to work out, or try during their naptime or after they are asleep. It's hard at first to get less sleep, but the exercise will give you more energy in the long run. Good luck!

WIth a 6 yr old and an infant, working full time and wife, the only time I find best is hitting the gym at 5 am. Sure, it's really hard sometimes, when it's so dark and cold outside but I consider my time at the gym "me-time" and love every minute of it. When I get back, I'm full of energy and pep and ready to seize the day. My family is still sleeping when I get back but I get my kids ready for school and the nanny in record time once I get home.
It's easy to say you're too tired, too stressed, too busy, too this or too that. Too bad. The only way you'll strip away the fat is to start by stripping away the excuses.
