for just casual wearing/walking around/working outside, etc I use a cheap pair of Starters from WalMart. They're ok. just ok.

for running I bought a nice pair of Asics last year. They're awesome.

for playing the drums I am always barefoot or wearing socks... don't like wearing shoes on the pedals even in the winter!

I only started running earlier this year, had to take a break and now I'm back at it, so I admit I know nothing except what seems to work for me so far. I started with New Balance 840's, but my overpronation and heavy heel strike beat them into submission pretty quickly. On a whim to get back on the road about 4 weeks ago, I picked up an inexpensive pair of Saucony Grid Cohesion 6's. There is less cushion in them than the NB, but I have been working on changing my foot strike to more of a mid foot strike and I think the reduced cushion actually helps me. Your mileage may vary, but the grids seem to be a good value and they were about 40% the price of the NB. For my next pair, I have to decide if I want to stick with these, or try a more expensive running shoe as hopefully I will have progressed a bit by then.

I've nearly used up my Saucony Guide 6's. They might last me a few more months, but I decided to transition them with a new pair of shoes- Brooks Ravenna 3's. i found a decent deal for them online, so I thought I'd give them a try.

I am also intrigued by the Hoka One One- "maximalist" cushioning. Anyone using those?

I use to always wear some form or other of new balance. I found them to be the most comfortable. After a couple years my feet started to really hurt and I read that wearing the same pair or type year after could lead to problems with arches, ball of your foot, etc. I switched up to Saucony for a while and found those to be a decent brand but they didn't last as long as the NB. Right now I am switching between Asics, Saucony, and New Balance depending on what I am doing. Treadmill, trail, or road.

One more week to go and I'll be out buying some new walking around shoes and some new running shoes!!!

Yay!

Right now I have an old pair of running shoes that are my walking around shoes, and there's holes in the soles on each one... so when it rains I'm the guy with wet feet.

I'm so excited about having shoes without holes in the bottom. It's not a good feature.

Nice!

I'm always happy to see something - anything made in North America.

Everyone tries to save a buck by having things manufactured offshore - it's a business model that is tearing the economy apart.

I'll be checking out some New Balance models soon..... need some money first...

Brooks Ghost, if you're a neutral runner and don't need any motion control

Nothing better in my opinion, and I've run in Asics, New Balance, Nike, and Mizuno. I buy two pairs at a time and rotate them weekly to let them breathe and extend their life a bit.

That was another question- when do you typically replace your running shoes? 5 years seems quite long. My understanding is they say after "X" miles since the cushioning breaks down. I typically look to replace once a year.

This thread just reminded me to get a new pair. Been running with my old Asics for nearly 5 years now, so I think it's definitely time for a change.

Saucony Cortana for good weather and treadmill. Under Armor Cartilage for bad weather and trails.

I'm not really sure. I've had a few brands and the model shoe can vary drastically to the point where I don't try on brands, I simply try on shoes. For example, I just bought a new pair on New Year's day. I think they're UA. I'd never heard of 'em, but they seem to be really comfortable, so I bought 'em. I have a 15K on Sunday, so we'll see if they cut it. Unfortunately, I don't really know how well they do until I run in them for a couple of races or long runs.

I've enjoyed my Asics, but my wife was custom fit for Saucony and LOVES them. It cost us about $25 extra to get her custom fit. But I think anyone who is serious about running should spend a little extra and find the "perfect" shoe.

To those who run (seriousrunners and not) what shoes do you find mostcomfortable and best performing?

For the last couple years I have found Saucony Ride (3 & 4) series very comfortable. Recently considering a new pair and getting the Ride 5 I decided to try ie againand go with the Air Max+ 2012. Expensive@ $150 but read some good reviews so figured Id give em a shot. They arrive tomorrow!
