This sounds like a tough situation with your knees.

I watched a family member struggle with back pain that led him to stop running and move to biking and now to swimming.

That YMCA idea sounds like it's got some promise. Pool work (ask about classes at the Y too that are in the pool) -- whatever it takes, right?

Walking, rowing machine or swimming. Eliptical is also good. I couldn't do a bicycle to save my butt because of the pain; but I could do the stair climber. The machine where the stairs actually rotate around would be best.
I bet you will be suprised if you walk every day for an hour and get your diet right.

I would love to ride a bike but right know I can't because of my knees. I have bone spurs and I can't bend and straighten my leg without it sounding like a rock tumbler, hopefully after I get them fixed I will be able to ride. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I agree, but I want to do cardio because I feel it makes my heart healthier and builds my indurance so I can workout longer and lose weight quicker. My thinking is the better I can breath the more I can workout.

I get that you want to get your weight down and get the surgery, but diet is 90% of this. Get your diet right (i.e. a consistent caloric deficit) and build strength and the weight will come off. Cardio is good for the heart, but not really great for weight loss.

My knees are bad , there is no cartilage and my bones have shifted making me slitley bowlegged so I can't hardly do anything without pain, that's why I am losing wieght so when I get down to 265 or so I can have total knee replacement surgery and hopfuly then I can exercise without pain and keep my wieght down to where I want a little easier because now it is difficult to lose weight and keep it off.

I know what you mean, I knew my were bad but I didn't know how bad until I went to the doctor and had x-rays and found out they are bone on bone, I have no cartilage in my knees so it is very difficult for me to exercise. I am looking in to joining my locale YMCA so I can swim or just do some kind of exercising in the pool.

I don't know if my knees are "bad" or not but the more often I run, the more they hurt... It gets more frequent the older I get. I have cut my running back to 2-3 times per week and limit my mileage. Other days I opt for the elliptical for less impact cardio... I wish I had access to a pool for swimming.

Depends. What is "bad knees"? Do you have chronic knee pain due to injury? Is it torn ligaments? Are you doing cardio?

I'm not doctor or physical therapist, but for me, cardio is terrible for the knees. The best remedy was to stop doing it. Secondary options are doing a bike, swimming or other activities that avoid knee usage. You could also consider weight lifting routines that strengthen the knee.

Does anyone here have bad knees and find it difficult to workout because of the pain?
