If you have a job these days your one of the lucky ones.

Try to look at the positives of having that job and focus on what it means you can do in your personal life. How having a job helps you feel about yourself.

I can't think of any job that worse than no job or no incoming $$$$

I love my job. The Company is not bad. Its just the peoples actions that make me think of looking for a change. I only stay because I realize the whole world is changing, so no matter where I go, it will be more of the same, and the job may not be as pleasant.

Hi, with the price of daycare,i now work at home online.I love it(being at home) but it is hard to find time for exercise.It's hard to be on a routine for exercise when i have no routine for working at home.I am learning to set aside my exercise time when my favorite t.v. show,I learn to place my bike in front and watch while pedaling away.

Dont waste a day of your life working at a job you hate!
Lifes too short and then you die!

Make every day count,if you are unhappy figure out what you need to do to fix that right away.

Im fortunate that i stumbled accidentally into a job in a field that I never thought id be in. Turns out Im pretty good at it and love every day of it!

I got lucky and landed in a job I like that I am good at.
I tried to retire the last time they floated a buy out but too many wanted out and I was denied.
Of course, I can go any time I want (without the buy out bennys, natch)...
Oh well...like I said, I like the gig.

To O.P.: Bean Counters are paid to be VOID of emotion and do everything by the numbers which is a perfectly good business plan. It doesn't always mean they catch the nuances of what's happening otherwise like economic satatus of an area or anything else. Word from corporate is never about "people" it's always about the DOLLAR count!

That said, I love my job and am TRUELY surprised when the day is over.

Sorry to hear you are in a rut of a job you don't like. I started my own business 16 years ago. It went through the ups and downs and I had to take a few positions along the way. My last job was with a huge conglomerate that brought down the US economic house 3 years ago. I said that was the last time I would work for someone else. Nothing like doing your job, being a top income producer for a region and due to age, gender and income level was "right sized". I am make less than before but my business is at home, I work when I want to and have stress free issues. The only down size is the fridge is in the other room but I am working on that. As was said before "find work you love and you will never work a day in your life". That is what I do, I found something I am passionate about and I love it. There is no work involved. 'If you don't like where you are at, "educate" your self, find a passion, and go for it. If you really want something you will get it, there is only you standing in your way. Even today there are times when I have to get out of my own way. You can do what ever you want, start small and work your way to what you want.

I work for a small business, 11 people including owner, and there are several aspects of it that suck. 50 hour standard work weeks, fast turn around, high stress jobs in production, the "hurry up and wait" aspect. A month ago, we laid off 3 people, whom I have been working with for years. Now, we have 2 new temps in here. I understand the tax breaks and pay scale difference as to why it happened, but to me one of the biggest benefits of working for a small business is the "family" aspect if you will. But they run this company like its a 100+ employee company for the most part. I am currently looking for a different job at a big company. If I am going to get treated like employee #217, I want the same benefits(health,dental, 401k, 40 hours workweeks w/ overtime, ect) that is offered at the big companies. I have a decent job, I just don't enjoy it, so I am fortunate enough to be selective to the jobs I apply for.

I am 29 years old, work 50 or more hours a week, and started putting myself through college 4 years ago. I have been working here for 7 years. With a company this small, I have already shattered the glass ceiling and ran into the steel beam in the roof. I can't say I hate my job, but I don't think it is for me in the long run.

HGSGUY - weird. It sounds like a manager or exec read a book recently. This used to happen to me all the time, especially at larger companies. When things like this happened, people would ask "why" and I would say "some VP read a book".

It almost sounds like they're trying to get everyone specialized to improve efficiency. But no one is considering the law of diminished returns here. You're not digging ditches, more shovels isn't usually the answer.

The last few months I received a great promotion at work, I'm low man on seniority, but its a six man department, one supervisor, five grunts, next year one will retire and two more in three years, I will move up this ladder fast. I'm not forty yet so i will have some time to grow into this job, things are going well here at the farm!

Brewmaster, I don't understand either. We didn't lose anybody, and it seems like our jobs have been dumbed down. Our guess is that in some future state they will decide we don't have enough work anymore and reduce the size of the organization from 4 to 1 or 2. The funny part is that they see improving customer service by reducing contact with the customer and increasing tools (and time to use them) to track how great they are doing! We have had a multi role and now we will not do actual customer support, we will help customer support get the answers they need, add levels to slow the response. We can't figure out, nor can they explain, what they are thinking. But saving money is going to cost a lot!!

I'm not sure I understand. Why would they do that? I think the most effective way I've ever seen a boss get a person or people to get is to set unachievable goals and fire them for not hitting them. Seems a lot easier for them to go that route. Or there is the easiest route of just saying "we're reorganizing", which has happened twice in as many years to some of my clients. But they really just fired a bunch of people they wanted gone, only to hire replacements.

We just had our whole leadership team here to tell us about how our jobs are being changed. Now it REALLY sucks. We are going to save money by having 6 other people take some of our jobs so we can concentrate on the part that we don't like doing anyway. I think they are trying to get us to quit. I think this may be the beginning of the end!

I am also thankful for having a job, even while being in a job that I do not mind, but with people I do not like in the least. The biggest obstacle in my case is that what I do is very much a niche market and there are not a lot of opportunities to move to elsewhere. I appreciate everyone's advice on the subject, but to belittle someone's decision to pray about it (don't know if that was your intent, but that is how it read to me) is not helpful. I know that I am praying for guidance, and it offers me great comfort when my job is at its worst.

My job is evolving, adding new things and taking away the parts I found pleasurable, even though they were hard. I am thankful I still have a job, and most of the time it is okay. I am in a little subdivision of a bigger company and they want me to do the same as they do at the head office. They have 12,000 people, we have 250, so the resources are not the same! They just can't seem to grasp the differences.

hahaha .. reminds me of a client I have. I really get along well with everyone in his organization except for 1 person. Unfortunately, that person is responsible for a lot of revenue, so I have to play nice. It's tough, but my mantra is IGNORE, IGNORE, IGNORE as much as possible! Good luck with your pain in the ass. heh.

yeah, you're right. I like what I do. The job is very easy. I have flexibility. If only I could get one co-worker to quit, but it just doesn't look like that's happening anytime soon. It's getting very hard to deal with.

Have you read that book that I linked to? It seems to address dealing with failure. Failure is not an end, it's a outcome. It also seems to address a lot of mistakes people make with regard to education. I always hear people say "I'm going back to school" ... it's like, for what? What is the market like for that skill? What is a typical starting salary for someone possessing that skill? It's funny how many people cannot answer those basic questions, yet they'll plop down, or worse, take out a loan for big bucks to get an education.

But TURTLESDOVE, it sounds like you have problems with your co-workers. That usually doesn't mean a career change, that sounds more like a company change. The problem with companies is that there are always people in them. heh.

I would suggest ditching the wishing, hoping and praying. The good lord gave you a brain, use it. If you like the industry you're in, hone your skill set. If you hate the industry you're in, find one that you love.

I've heard good things about this book, but haven't read it.

Ya, me too. All of the grumblings about Monday and elation over Friday is mostly lost on me. Don't get me wrong, I'd rather do whatever I want every day of the week, but work, while stressful and busy at times is in a field I enjoy. Sometimes I cannot believe I get paid for this. heh.

But to the OP, is the problem you're having with your company or with your line of work? Both are fixable, but both require dramatically different approaches. hehe.
