...I loved riding my bike, and now that I'm middle-aged...I still love riding my bike!

"Rather train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come" (1Timothy´┐Ż4:7-8)

"Jesus answered, 'The most important [commandment] is, 'Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength'" (Mark 12:29-30).

There are two kinds of boys: inside dogs and outside dogs. Mine is an outside dog. He can't spend enough hours a day outside. Winter kills him because he can't be outside as much as he would like.

The long-term pleasure of being in shape far outweighs the short-term pleasure of eating things that are detrimental to your health.

When I was a kid, I remember it was our goal to spend as much time outside the house, when my kids were growing up, they felt it was a punishment when I kicked them off the video games and made them play outside!

FAITH is not believing that GOD CAN, it is knowing that He WILL.

I'm cracking up! I also thought all cats were girls and all dogs were boys.
Even though we had a girl dog...

When I was a kid

Bikes only had one speed, whatever you could pedal unless you were lucky enough to have a 2-speed kickback.

We played kick-the-can in the front yard until the street lights came on, that's when we knew it was time to go home.

Our family only had one television. It was a 19 inch Black and White Zenith.

We rode our bikes to school. Our mom's didn't drive us and drop us off.

When adults spoke to kids the kids replied with "Yes Sir and Yes Ma'am."

Ah, those were the days.

Nothing tastes as good as healthy feels and looks.

I got a citation at 11 years old. If you couldn't throw a bale of hay, you had to drive the trucks and tractors. Caught in the hay truck, by a new Deputy Sheriff. The Magistrate fined me, and my Father, each 5 dollars. He said he had to, but that he would have a talk with the Deputy. The following year, the Deputy just waved. No way you could get by with that today.

I still get that tomato straight from the vine, as do my children, as do my grandchildren. I was taught how to "process" that tomato, for the coming winter. I'm trying to pass the things that were passed to me. Today, it's "deer stand" setup with two of the grand kids. Yesterday it was target practice, school had an IS day.

I really liked a previous post something to the effect, "Everything important was only a bike ride away".

Things are different today, but as some have mentioned, some things are for the better. The information available to children today is incredible. We just need to keep them somewhat grounded in how/where/when it is used.

There is no bad food, only bad cooks.

I try to teach my son about a few of the things that are different about from when I was a kid. We were at a family BBQ a few months ago, there was about a dozen kids that were playing on little BMX bicycles and I put a soda can on the back tire...lol Something I use to do all the time as a kid to get an engine sound on my bike but to these kids that was new and never seen before...lol

But I still drink water from the hose, use a rotary phone, and my tv does not have a remote (well, no batteries in it...got to keep it to go into the menu section). It is up to us to hold on to the good parts of the past...lol

I remember being able to rent VCRS, we drank from a garden hose. Seems to be considered unsafe today. I learned to ride a bike on a gravel road, was interesting. My parents never locked the house doors at night, there was always a dog outside to run around with us. I also remember always getting pumpkin's at my grandpas and being amazed at the veggies he grew. His main source of income for his life was having a farm garden, I have no idea how big it was, definitely a couple of acres and he was well known at local farmers markets and with the community where he lived.

When I was a kid I used to believe that the songs you heard on the radio were the bands inside the radio station playing them.

I also believed that if you got into an old car the radio would only play old songs.

When I was a really really young kid I thought the cats were the girl and the dogs were the boy in the animal world. Right up there with thinking that brown cows made chocolate milk.

Halloween was more fun.
We never had to worry about people putting things in candy or apples to hurt kids.
We went all over town by ourselves, parents never came with us to keep us safe.
One woman would make or bake special treats for the kids on our block!!

I remember that the 70's weren't so hot either. I grew up on the Chicago area and I remember how worried my grandmother was about us when the John Wayne Gacy murders were reported.

I thought we'd have flying cars and hoverboards by now.

Because of the amount of information available to everyone at anytime, it seems that everyone nowadays has an opinion about everything. I miss the days when I didn't have to care about every little thing that happens in the world.

When I was a kid nobody thought any different about a boy babysitting for girls (and only .50/hr). It seems as if society has degraded so far that is not a common practice anymore. That goes for hitch hiking too. You wouldn't think twice catching a ride with a stranger or even picking one up for that matter.
Boy, times do change!

In the 70's we would play with other kids out in the streets, vacant lots, school field houses (do they still exist?), and basketball courts until it seemed we would pass out from exhaustion. Notice that I didn't say parks. They were more of a distance away and were a rare trip for us. Benny

According to my mom... when I was a kid (the 70s) kids were getting kidnapped and all sorts of weird cult things were going on in the press - and parents started to STOP letting their kids do all the things so many of you talked about.

When I was a kid, boys were allowed to be boys: playing rough, playing (gasp) with toy guns, running around, never sitting still, getting dirty...you know, BOYS. Nowadays, it seems that behaviour that used to be expected and acceptable, now "requires medication".

The school bus driver used to stop the bus at the little strip plaza near the end of her route, just down the hill from my house (I, and 2 other girls who lived close by, were the last 3 kids on the bus route). We would get off the bus, go to the variety store and buy candy, and then she would drive us all home.

When I was a kid, my best friend and I were tomboys and wouldn't be caught dead playing w/ dolls. However, we played with Ittie-Bitties which were just like dolls (they were small rubbery animals).
We used our imaginations. We played Indians & made bows out of bamboo, string, tape & rubber bands. Arrows were dowels we bought at the hardware store (which we rode our bikes to) and sharpened the tips w/ my dad's wood file. Being girls, we had to then fashion the correct Indian garb out of felt and more string.
We rode our bikes and had Bike Olympics where we did tricks. We crank called people from the phonebook but not in a mean way - we'd just giggle and recite silly TV commercials.
We made up (awful) joke books and ate fresh blackberries from her grandpa's farm in Oregon. Tried to start a pet-sitting business & advertised by posting index cards on the grocery store bulletin board.
We are still best friends over 44 years later. Holy cow, I'm old! Oh well...beats the alternative.

No texting, so you had to write a note to a girl you liked and find a way to pass it to her. Exciting when she gave you one back, and until you could find a time to read it in private, it was all you could think about.

My older brother would pick on me because of my weight NO I wasn't overweight I was underweight for my age & size. At age 11 I weight only 60lbs it wasn't till I was 15 befor I weigh 100lbs & 19 befor I could keep it over 100lbs. It wasn't till I was 48 befor I hit 200lbs & 51 befor I felt I needed to go on a diet for the 1st time. In my home town of Medfield Ma if a kid did something to help someone an adult would remind them " GOD WILL REWARD YOU FOR THIS". Now you might think I need to be in the LUNNY BIN for this connfession but each & every # I posted is 1000% the THURTH.

When I was a kid... there was no way I could have been able to do and learn what my little 4 year old girl knows and does today. I couldn't navigate through electronic devices like smart phones, computers and video games like my 4 year old does to learn about the stars, planets, atoms, galaxies, insects, and everything my daughter loves to learn about with the touch of a button. I couldn't have started internet chinese classes just because I was curious about it at 4 years old (I guess I didn't even know there were other languages different than mine), I couldn't have had an electronic microscope where I would be able to closely look at ants and butterflies and learn about them first hand like my daughter does. When I was a kid I didn't have the learning opportunities my little one has now.

So yeah, I might be melancholic about how things have changed and how I am growing old, but this is an incredible time to be alive, specially for the little ones.

If I had the opportunity to be reborn again in the seventies or today... I guess it is obvious what I would choose.

PS- We don't give our kids cell phones, and we make them play outside. That is hardly a problem- parents need to take responsibility for their kids' health and well-being, and also provide proper supervision based on the childrens' age and maturity levels.

It isn't rocket science.

I sit in our garden and eat tomatoes off the vine now. I didn't realize that was a "past era" deal!

Does anyone else get tired of these "when I was a kid" lines of nonsense? The world may be better in some ways now, too! ;-)

Sad thing is that if you treat your kid like that today you are ostracized. Not give them a cell phone? Force them to play outside? That's grounds for DSS to step in.

People feel so guilty for not being there for their kids that they think they are being a good parent by doing all this other over protective crap, When what they really need is to quit babying their kids so much.

And we wonder why grown men are end up acting like children well into their 20s and 30s.

I agree with what you said. Learning how to control and budget money is a big lesson we all should learn, the younger the better. Yes, unfortunately our government has gotten into the business of America. Printing more money is not going to solve our financial problems.

We played baseball, football, whiffleball, play hide and seek after dark.We had woods behind our house, that we had to sneek into and a few fishing ponds back there and not get caught by the owners of the land(we did get caught a few times, but owners were cool about it and gave us permission to fish anytime).Had camp outs in the back yard.No worries in the world.

I played a lot of yard football and basketball games. We always had a game at my house with about 7-8 kids. We had a tv and I was the remote. My mom always cooked dinner (and it was the best food I have ever had). We had no computers or cell phones but I remember when I got a phone in my room and that was pretty cool even if it was a dial pad phone.

Had a lot of medical problems until I was about ten. So had to learn to play by myself and at least had a imaginary mind!

When I finally overcame some of the issues all I thought about was football.Played a lot of sports, but the only one that ever mattered was football. All the rest were just "off season taining "

Ate carrots and peas right out of the garden. Rode my 80 Yamaha and nearly killed myself doing it, it was lots of fun. Worked the farm along with my brothers, dad and grampa. Got smacked when I was a smartass. Played ball, hunted, and was jealous of my city cousins cause they got money from paper routes.
Was 12 before I knew there was such a thing as pizza delivery, it amazed me.
I didn't know how good I had it.

I learned respect and self worth. That I had great impact on my destiny, things could happen, but mostly I was responsible for what became of me. I was taught to not rely on others generosity except in dire circumstances.

We used to play games that were either old west themed or WW II themed. Either way there were guns (sticks) and killing. Of course it was all politically incorrect, but we never even heard that word before. It also taught us a lot about working out a situation along with great running and other physical skills and determination, patience, and daring.

We often went home to get the iodine treatment!

Pick up sports: baseball, tag football, handball. Kick the Can after dark. Rode my bike all over town: no fear of gangs, kidnapping, traffic. 3-channels on TV; listened to a lot of radio....Inner Sanctum, Green Hornet, Lone Ranger, etc. Only came inside when it was absolutely necessary: meals and bed.

FITPRO: Absolutely! It's funny... when you're a kid you are in a hurry to grow up because being an adult seems so 'cool' and fun. Then you get there and you're like "$hit... this isn't everything its cracked up to be!"

Ahhhhhh the days of playing outside after school for hours, coming in for dinner and then playing games or watching the tele with family.

And what happened to kids being respectful? That has pretty much flown the coop...

They want to keep cutting all the extra curricular activities like PE and they cut sports teams so they have $ in their budget for entitlement programs like free breakfast and lunch programs. It's important that kids aren't starving at their home because its not their fault they are in that situation, but maybe focusing money on parenting and budgeting your money would make a difference.

When I was in middle school we actually had a class for just one semester and it was just once a week that dealt with budgeting your money and balancing a checkbook. Balancing a checkbook may be outdated now, but it still holds a purpose and teaches kids to manage their money so when they become adults they don't blow it on cars/rims/games/going out etc and focus on feeding their kids and paying their bills. In this class when you walked in the door you drew a card and it was usually some kind of unexpected bill like needing new brakes, you still had other bills to manage, free spending money, etc that you had to do and even though it was fake and all on paper it tough me some good lessons. Our gov't keeps throwing cash at issues instead of addressing them, drives me nuts!!!

F***in' A Feedpump! (as I used to say in the Navy) We had toys that didn't need batteries and played board games with each other, none of this virtual computer game stuff. Tag, kick the can, riding bicycles, playing in tree forts, ring-and-tear in the summer; snowball fights, sledding and tobogganing, hockey at the neighborhood "rink" in the winter.

All Summer I played baseball from about 7am-7pm. All fall and winter it was football. Late winter and spring is was basketball. I drive by baseball fields now and I never see kids out there. Sad. I am 40 so I had Atari. Nothing better than being outside playing ball.

Also, I remember my 10 year old friend buying his brother 75 cent packs of cigarettes. I remember being outraged when soda machines went from 25 cents to 30 cents. I remember my P.E. teachers telling me Soccer was going to be a major US sport by 1980 and that I better learn the metric system because it was going to take over in 1980.

I still remember the Christmas when I was 8 and got a Nintendo. We still played outside and were only allowed to play Nintendo for a set amount of hours or when it was raining. Music was positive and not focused on sex, kids got picked on but we handled it ourselves, we rode our bikes, walked or took the bus to school, we had to work for what we wanted and weren't given things (except for bdays and xmas), we sore ridiculously short shorts with tube socks that had blue and green colored stripes on them. Haha, gotta love the 80's!

How about those old rotary dial phones. If you asked your friend for his number it would start with 2 letters then 5 numbers.
I used to dial my own home phone number wait for a click then hang up fast. It would ring back and I would wait for someone else to answer the phone and say hello, hello, hello - no one there. I used to get the biggest kick out of that.

I bought my first horse when I was 6. Rode the horse to school. Did not have a TV in our house until I was 12. Never watched it much, only 3 channels.

Spent most of the time working on the farm, hunting or fishing. We got kicked out of the house at 6:00 in the morning if we were not out hunting or fishing all night. My brother and I bought our first truck together when I was 14 and he was 16 from money we made hauling hay. I put the first dent in it the following night driving through the woods to a fishing hole...LOL

You still dont need to lock the door and can always leave the keys in the ignition in my hometown.

I played organized baseball in the spring, soccer in the fall and basketball in the winter. I rode my bicycle to and from practice and games. I rode that thing all over the neighborhood and to friends houses. I was outside from sun up to a half hour past dusk. We played football in the street, wiffleball, kickball, tag, ghost in the graveyard, kick the can and whatever other games we could think up.

I was skinny/scrawny as a kid. When I got my first driver's license, it read 5'9", 125lbs. I was extremely active and could eat anything I wanted and never gained weight. Ahhhhh....the good old days.

I ate way too many snacks and drank way too much Mountain Dew. Running outside was like trying to run through a chimney stack. My parents and my classmates made snide remarks about my weight and of course I blew them off because no one knows what it's like to be me. Treats were fast food and ice cream places. When I was a kid, I was an idiot.

Meals were served at 7, noon, and 6 pm. No fast food in our small town and the fridge was not full of snacks. But I was still a big kid. Go figure.

I use to get one of those "forward" funny e-mails that said a bunch of that stuff like riding in the back of a pickup truck, came home when the street lights went on, didn't need to lock your doors, all that and it was true,...mostly.

The part I miss (well for me at at least) is not having a cell phone. Dang, I can be reached at anytime and can't use the "But Honey, there was no phone around to call to tell you that I was comming home late"
emoticon

"...put that beer down & you git ur a$$ home right NOW!"

USING SP TO HELP YOU KEEP TRACK OF WEIGHT LOSs, CALORIE INTAKE AND EXERCISE "IS" THE SHORTCUT!!!!!!

I agree, but when I was a kid, we didn't have "sparkpeople" either.

We were only in the house for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There was no cd's, video games, or compters.
If you had a TV it was black and white and only on at night. There were no seat belts in cars! Most of our toy's were hand made. Fast food did not exist. The government did not protect us from everything, and we are still alive!!
