Can't forget penny candies, collecting empty soda bottles and returning them for the 3 cents and buying candy. Or if you got REALLY LUCKY, and found a gold mine of empty bottles you'd turn them all in, get an RC and maybe Twinkies, eat it up then take the bottle back for 3 cents worth of candy. And we didn't gain weight because we were always outside playing. "What, stay inside today? No way...Aw, Mom..." Ah yes, those were the days...

Carpe Diem,
Dwayne

Yes I remember the party lines; the only phone in the kitchen where MOM could hear everything, playing a LOT more outside, until the street lights came on and that meant either dinner or get home! Also, when you got thirsty you sucked water out of a sprinkler head or used the garden hose. Bottled water? Unheard of, except for Sparkletts 5 gallon jugs for the house, which we didn't use. No bike helmets, and if you fell, you suffered in somewhat silence with your Mom scolding you for being reckless, not it being someone else's fault. Ah, those were the days...

Carpe Diem,
Dwayne

My grandmother had one of them and was so mad at the phone company when they forced her to change it to straight line in the 70's! I couldn't have lived that way, but it didn't bother her!

Most people were more active. As there was no internet, no video games, and we only had 3 TV channels on a black and white TV. People played more games and sports out side.

...I loved riding my bike, and now that I'm middle-aged...I still love riding my bike!

There are two kinds of boys: inside dogs and outside dogs. Mine is an outside dog. He can't spend enough hours a day outside. Winter kills him because he can't be outside as much as he would like.

The long-term pleasure of being in shape far outweighs the short-term pleasure of eating things that are detrimental to your health.

When I was a kid, I remember it was our goal to spend as much time outside the house, when my kids were growing up, they felt it was a punishment when I kicked them off the video games and made them play outside!

When I was a kid

Bikes only had one speed, whatever you could pedal unless you were lucky enough to have a 2-speed kickback.

We played kick-the-can in the front yard until the street lights came on, that's when we knew it was time to go home.

Our family only had one television. It was a 19 inch Black and White Zenith.

We rode our bikes to school. Our mom's didn't drive us and drop us off.

When adults spoke to kids the kids replied with "Yes Sir and Yes Ma'am."

Ah, those were the days.

Nothing tastes as good as healthy feels and looks.

I got a citation at 11 years old. If you couldn't throw a bale of hay, you had to drive the trucks and tractors. Caught in the hay truck, by a new Deputy Sheriff. The Magistrate fined me, and my Father, each 5 dollars. He said he had to, but that he would have a talk with the Deputy. The following year, the Deputy just waved. No way you could get by with that today.

I still get that tomato straight from the vine, as do my children, as do my grandchildren. I was taught how to "process" that tomato, for the coming winter. I'm trying to pass the things that were passed to me. Today, it's "deer stand" setup with two of the grand kids. Yesterday it was target practice, school had an IS day.

I really liked a previous post something to the effect, "Everything important was only a bike ride away".

Things are different today, but as some have mentioned, some things are for the better. The information available to children today is incredible. We just need to keep them somewhat grounded in how/where/when it is used.

There is no bad food, only bad cooks.

I try to teach my son about a few of the things that are different about from when I was a kid. We were at a family BBQ a few months ago, there was about a dozen kids that were playing on little BMX bicycles and I put a soda can on the back tire...lol Something I use to do all the time as a kid to get an engine sound on my bike but to these kids that was new and never seen before...lol

But I still drink water from the hose, use a rotary phone, and my tv does not have a remote (well, no batteries in it...got to keep it to go into the menu section). It is up to us to hold on to the good parts of the past...lol

I remember being able to rent VCRS, we drank from a garden hose. Seems to be considered unsafe today. I learned to ride a bike on a gravel road, was interesting. My parents never locked the house doors at night, there was always a dog outside to run around with us. I also remember always getting pumpkin's at my grandpas and being amazed at the veggies he grew. His main source of income for his life was having a farm garden, I have no idea how big it was, definitely a couple of acres and he was well known at local farmers markets and with the community where he lived.

When I was a kid I used to believe that the songs you heard on the radio were the bands inside the radio station playing them.

I also believed that if you got into an old car the radio would only play old songs.

When I was a really really young kid I thought the cats were the girl and the dogs were the boy in the animal world. Right up there with thinking that brown cows made chocolate milk.

Halloween was more fun.
We never had to worry about people putting things in candy or apples to hurt kids.
We went all over town by ourselves, parents never came with us to keep us safe.
One woman would make or bake special treats for the kids on our block!!

When I was a kid nobody thought any different about a boy babysitting for girls (and only .50/hr). It seems as if society has degraded so far that is not a common practice anymore. That goes for hitch hiking too. You wouldn't think twice catching a ride with a stranger or even picking one up for that matter.
Boy, times do change!

In the 70's we would play with other kids out in the streets, vacant lots, school field houses (do they still exist?), and basketball courts until it seemed we would pass out from exhaustion. Notice that I didn't say parks. They were more of a distance away and were a rare trip for us. Benny

According to my mom... when I was a kid (the 70s) kids were getting kidnapped and all sorts of weird cult things were going on in the press - and parents started to STOP letting their kids do all the things so many of you talked about.

When I was a kid, boys were allowed to be boys: playing rough, playing (gasp) with toy guns, running around, never sitting still, getting dirty...you know, BOYS. Nowadays, it seems that behaviour that used to be expected and acceptable, now "requires medication".

The school bus driver used to stop the bus at the little strip plaza near the end of her route, just down the hill from my house (I, and 2 other girls who lived close by, were the last 3 kids on the bus route). We would get off the bus, go to the variety store and buy candy, and then she would drive us all home.

When I was a kid, my best friend and I were tomboys and wouldn't be caught dead playing w/ dolls. However, we played with Ittie-Bitties which were just like dolls (they were small rubbery animals).
We used our imaginations. We played Indians & made bows out of bamboo, string, tape & rubber bands. Arrows were dowels we bought at the hardware store (which we rode our bikes to) and sharpened the tips w/ my dad's wood file. Being girls, we had to then fashion the correct Indian garb out of felt and more string.
We rode our bikes and had Bike Olympics where we did tricks. We crank called people from the phonebook but not in a mean way - we'd just giggle and recite silly TV commercials.
We made up (awful) joke books and ate fresh blackberries from her grandpa's farm in Oregon. Tried to start a pet-sitting business & advertised by posting index cards on the grocery store bulletin board.
We are still best friends over 44 years later. Holy cow, I'm old! Oh well...beats the alternative.

No texting, so you had to write a note to a girl you liked and find a way to pass it to her. Exciting when she gave you one back, and until you could find a time to read it in private, it was all you could think about.

My older brother would pick on me because of my weight NO I wasn't overweight I was underweight for my age & size. At age 11 I weight only 60lbs it wasn't till I was 15 befor I weigh 100lbs & 19 befor I could keep it over 100lbs. It wasn't till I was 48 befor I hit 200lbs & 51 befor I felt I needed to go on a diet for the 1st time. In my home town of Medfield Ma if a kid did something to help someone an adult would remind them " GOD WILL REWARD YOU FOR THIS". Now you might think I need to be in the LUNNY BIN for this connfession but each & every # I posted is 1000% the THURTH.

When I was a kid... there was no way I could have been able to do and learn what my little 4 year old girl knows and does today. I couldn't navigate through electronic devices like smart phones, computers and video games like my 4 year old does to learn about the stars, planets, atoms, galaxies, insects, and everything my daughter loves to learn about with the touch of a button. I couldn't have started internet chinese classes just because I was curious about it at 4 years old (I guess I didn't even know there were other languages different than mine), I couldn't have had an electronic microscope where I would be able to closely look at ants and butterflies and learn about them first hand like my daughter does. When I was a kid I didn't have the learning opportunities my little one has now.

So yeah, I might be melancholic about how things have changed and how I am growing old, but this is an incredible time to be alive, specially for the little ones.

If I had the opportunity to be reborn again in the seventies or today... I guess it is obvious what I would choose.

PS- We don't give our kids cell phones, and we make them play outside. That is hardly a problem- parents need to take responsibility for their kids' health and well-being, and also provide proper supervision based on the childrens' age and maturity levels.

It isn't rocket science.

I sit in our garden and eat tomatoes off the vine now. I didn't realize that was a "past era" deal!

Does anyone else get tired of these "when I was a kid" lines of nonsense? The world may be better in some ways now, too! ;-)
