It's tempting to choose something fierce and intimidating, but that's not me on most days.
I just looked up the Chinese calendar. I was born in Feb. 1982, which makes me a dog - and the associate element is Yang Water.
I'd say all this is rather on the nose. My mother recently commented that my whole family is impressed and surprised at how loyal I have turned out to be as an adult, which fits being a dog. I am also playful, protective, and jealous when those I'm loyal to give attention to others. Those are all very doglike qualities. I tend to be passive, allowing the wills of my loved ones move me about in life. I'm easily excited about things - I have a lot of enthusiasm.
Yang signifies brightness and heat (as opposed to ying's cold and dark). And I'm definitely a passionate person.
Water is interesting - I was on the brink of choosing the animal "chameleon" because I tend to change shape to fit whatever social container I happen to be in. I also tend to be somewhat melancholic and artsy at times, which is often associated with the element water.
