I was at 400 and now I'm 265 a year later. Have him get active for 30 minutes a day 5 days a week. It is imperative that he make lifestyle changes. Have him find healthy foods that he likes that he can replace the unhealthy stuff with so that he doesn't consider it a diet. It's more about a well balanced diet then eliminating everything that you love. I'd be lying if I said I didn't have a few slices of pizza, or a greasy burger every now and then, but I balance that into my allotted calorie range.
Tracking calories down to the ounce initially and managing serving sizes is key to understanding how much you should be eating and so you can adjust.
It's not easy and will take hard work, but he can do it, he just has to have the desire and determination to make it happen.
