I don't drink enough of it! I've always loved milk and probably always will. Give it to me skim, whole, half, whatever... for me there's nothing like a glass of cold milk.

"Well, humans are the only animals that continue to drink milk after childhood. "
Milk doesn't suddenly turn 'evil' after someone is a few years old. It is still a good source of calcium, protein and other goodies that aren't easy to get from other foods. We don't drink it after babyhood because 1) it's weird and 2) mom needs to give the next baby a chance. We also cook our food. It usually leads to better absorption of nutrients. There are many things we can do to give us an advantage over other animals.

Over the last few years I've noticed that milk, even skim milk, plays havoc with my stomach. I switched to the Vanilla Soy Milk and haven't looked back. I don't drink a great deal of it, but sometimes, nothing tastes as good as a glass of milk. So, soy it is.
We all start somewhere. The difference is where we take ourselves from there.
Mostly with fake (yes the low fat types, can be fake stuff) Half and Half you have to check out what chemicals and filler type stuff they put in there. I'd rather go with wholesome milk (if there is such a thing these days) or at least as close as I can get.
Milk can be a bad thing since our mass produce society has lowered the quality due to unhealthy farming methods, feeds and antibiotics and the like possibly being in the mix. I hope I don't get sued for this (Oprah did for saying negative things about the beef industry a few years back.) Everybody should watch the movie "Food Inc."

I LOVE milk (3 glasses a day, non fat of course), and it has been a huge part of my diet and training regimen for years. Yes you do have to watch the sugar aspect, but the other benefits make up for that. If you are training hard, it is an easy and valuable source of protein and vitamins.

I actually bought a quart of "fat free half and half" at the grocery store today. I've never tried it before, but it was intriguing. On the one hand, it's 20 calories per serving instead of 100... big difference. On the other hand, though, half and half is supposed to be half milk, half cream, and who ever heard of fat-free cream? Isn't fat-free cream just milk? And isn't fat-free milk just skim milk? So is fat-free half and half just milk mixed with milk?
Thought I would try it out, though. I have plenty of the real stuff in case this doesn't cut it (and I suspect it won't cut it).

LOL @Adam - I hear you on the half-and-half. There is no way in hell I'm putting mystery powder or fat-free liquid dung in my coffee. Having real half-and-half in my coffee is something that's never been negotiable.
I only drink a couple of cups of coffee a day, so it's not like I consume enough half-and-half to make a big difference WRT calories. Half-and-half is not what made me fat. Things like cheese curls did, heh.

I will happily sacrifice a half sandwich for a glass of milk in some situations... Not that I eat very many freshly-baked chocolate chip cookies, but I do like cake, and nothing goes with it like a glass of milk. I used to drink several two-cup glasses with each meal, though, and that was way too much. Now I drink one cup after dinner, some nights,
As for in my coffee... I will give up solid food before I will give up half and half in my coffee. I switched from sugar to splenda, but I'm not giving up my half and half in my coffee. I just make cuts in other areas to make up for it.

I drink soy milk. I like it a lot more than skim milk, and since I recently found out I have IBS, it turns out it's better for me not to drink regular milk.
Many people cannot or should not drink milk for health reasons. Fortunately, there are many other sources of calcium (soy or almond milk, leafy green vegetables, even TUMS).

Good point. If it's the calories you are worried about, just make room for it and enjoy the taste. Personally, I couldn't imagine my protein shakes with anything but milk. If you only drink it for the Calcium, take a rolaids.

Yeah I was a big fan of milk too especially after I broke my collar bone (x2) in high school. Then one day a doctor who was helping me with my kidney stones nearly fainted when I told him how much milk I drank in a day (1/2 to 1 gal).
Now I am doing good if I get 1/4 to 1/2 a cup each day which goes in my coffee (I gave up cream for SP).
As for Soda... Yeah I'm big on Coke Zero or Diet Dr. Pepper. But I am trying to get away from it 'cause of the arificial sweetners. However I'm still using those in my coffee and I'm here to tell ya I'm not drinking coffee without some sort of sweetner! Barf-o-rama!
And if someone says I need to give up Coffee then they might get a pinch! hehe!

Yes, it was pointed out earlier in the thread that humans are the only ones who drink milk after childhood...and as I said in response, I could care less what other animals do when you consider that dogs eat their own feces!
I think the reason I started this conversation over a year ago was due to the fact that I was having to give up a lot of things because the calories involved racked up pretty quickly. Prior to Spark, I would have never thought to count the calories from milk or orange juice. Now its, "I could have a glass of milk or half a sandwich, which will fill me up more?". And I'll go on record that I frequently sacrifice healthy calories (like milk would be) just so I can have a piece of pie!
I've gotten good at that balancing act, figuring out what fills the stomach vs. what just tastes good.

Well, humans are the only animals that continue to drink milk after childhood.
In a situation where it's difficult to get calcium any other way, I'd say drinking cow's milk makes sense. But taking a multivitamin and some calcium supplements would take care of that (and probably works out to be cheaper too). The only other benefit is keeping the multi-billion dollar dairy industry rolling in cash.
(No offense intended to dairy farmers - I love me some cheese and eggs )

Seems like the conventional thinking changes daily about whether milk is healthy or not.
I've been drinking skim for about 10 years. Very nutritious, but yeah, the hormones are a concern. Certainly not going to replace it with a higher calorie beverage, but something like soy or almond milk might be a possibility.
I used to be a heavy Diet Coke drinker, but it seemed like it was increasing my appetite. Maybe it was just the foods I was eating along with the soda.

I drink it for the fat content. I'm currently working on a Muscle Gain cycle so I need the extra calories to get me through the day. I use it for my protein shakes. If I start to feel bloated then i switch to skim otherwise Vitamin D whole milk it is!

Well, I started this thread a year ago, so it's a little surprising to all the sudden see it getting posts.
I quit my whining, and I gave up drinking milk. I don't drink juice anymore either. Water, water, water, and the occasional Slurpee are the only liquids I consume these days.
I don't miss drinking the milk like I thought I would, but I'm tempted now and then.

Drinking any amount of soda regular or diet is not good for you. The regular version is empty calories meaning it does nothing nutritional for your body. The diet version is just as bad for you due to the poisons it contains for sweeteners.
You'd be best not to drink soda at all. As far as milk and juice is concerned, there's nothing wrong with having a glass here or there as long as you're maintaining a well balanced diet and it fits your goal.
100% juice and milk have nutritional benefits to them and aren't empty calories. Having 1 or 2 servings a day is good for you. Sure juice can have more sugar than soda but it's natural sugar, it's not added so it's just like eating the fruit.
I haven't particularly liked milk since I was a child, so I don't consume it very often but it is a good source of calcium and protien, so having a glass here or there isn't bad for you.
I'm not saying go out and drink a gallon of milk or a whole jug of juice a day, but having 1 or 2 8oz servings a day can be good for a well balanced diet.

Yes, I'm aware that we're the only species that drinks milk after weening. But you know, dogs eat their own feces, so I'm not too concerned about what other animals do!
Not that I have since beginning this diet, but tell me milk isn't the absolute best thing in the world to drink with fresh baked chocolate chip cookies. The idea of dipping Oreos in anything but milk is just absurd. I like dairy products. And I've never seen a dog or cat deny themselves a bowl of milk if offered either!

I have been a big fan of non-fat (skim) milk for a long time-but recently I was introduced to Blue Diamond Almond Milk. At first I was very hesitant to try it-the idea of soy or rice milk is so unappealing to me that I have always walked past them in the dairy case.BUT!!! The refrigerated version of Blue Diamond Almond Milk looks, smells and tastes like the best quality whole milk on the planet and has only 60 calories and 30% of the Calcium that you need for a day per cup! Yes there is a bit of an almond taste-but it is not distracting-in fact fine whole milk has a bit of an almond-like taste. Be warned that the unrefrigerated version of the same product does not have this same great taste and it has only 20% of the calcium that you need per cup serving.I promise you this stuff really rocks!!! I have given up skim milk and dont miss it in the least.

Humans are the only animals who continue to drink milk after being weaned.
Women maybe should drink milk for the calcium to help with bone mass, but you can get it from other sources. Guys really don't need it at all after you are full grown.

I have in insatiable sweet tooth, so juice helps me out starting the day. I actually buy presugared cereals because otherwise I'll dump more sugar into a non presweetened!
Currently I'm not trying to build muscle mass. I've got enough mass as it is. I need to drop poundage, but I'm trying to find a happy medium between suffering and satisfaction. Juice and some Cap'n Crunch in the morning go a long way towards balancing that equation.
In my opinion the juice is more of a problem than the milk. I don't drink anything but water and the very little bit of milk in my coffee, but the juice has an enormous amount of sugar ....much more than milk does without the added benefits of the fat and protein. Milk is much more balanced as far as macros go and if you are looking to build muscle mass I'd say nix the juice and drink milk instead.

Well I've been drinking nonfat milk for as long as I can remember. My 3 year old drinks whole milk, and the thought of it just turns my stomach.
No, I don't put Coke Zero on my cereal!
I have 8 oz. of OJ in the morning, along with 1/2 cup of milk in my cereal. If I drink milk with a meal, it's gonna be 16 oz. I basically look at my caloric count to see if I can have it or not, and that's what sucks.

Everything can be bad for you in some way or another, especially if you ingest too much of it. I drink a little milk here and then, and I have orange juice around for another different taste, but I probably only drink 4 oz a day of either if I even have some. Ive always been a fan of water though, it has just such a great taste to it...

Drinking milk is very important if you do not want to develop osteoporosis. There is a happy medium to drinking milk but I always try to include it in my diet. All of the good things of milk out weigh the bad but you do need to be drinking a lot of water. I have learned an easy way to burn more fat is to drink upwards of a gallon a day. It worked for me and the people I train in the military.

Milk hast its place. I drink skim for the most part, but only 1-2 cups 2, maybe 3 times per week.
If you get into endurance sports, chocloate milk is a really good post workout beverage with just the right blend of carbs and fat.

Milk has its place in the diet. I've been on Skim milk (with A&D added) forever now...you get used to it. Milk was essential while we were growing up, but I guess since our metabolisms aren't as fast as they were when we're growing up, it's not as good for us. When you stop drinking soda, it'll be tough to get through the first week due to the caffeine withdrawal headache that comes with it. But the more water you drink, the more you will come to appreciate it. When I need something more, I lace my water with either lemon, lime, or some apple juice (just enough to let me know there's something more in there).
Gotta ask... do you put Coke Zero on your cereal? lol

When I was at my doctor's (which is what led to me dieting) I mentioned that I had cut my soda consumption down to 1 a day. She said that was a good start, but try to eliminate it. I said fine, I'll just drink more milk cause I know juice isn't a good substitute. That's when I was informed that I shouldn't really be drinking all that much milk either (even though I only drink nonfat). I asked what was left, and water was the answer. Huh.
What amazes me is that a 16 oz. glass of milk has more calories than a can of Dr Pepper. So while I do drink more water now, I tend to substitute a Coke Zero for milk, just so I don't have to deal with calories. Odd predicament.
