I've been using a modified low carb diet for the last two weeks and I really enjoy it. Was not too hard so far.

After a lifetime (50 years) of coping with tendency to faint when my blood sugars dropped, I began to gain weight and then I was a full-blown Type 2 diabetic. My family doctor suggested Dr. Bernstein's book. Nothing fancy and you can find used copies at library sales of his first book if buying a new book is not in your budget.

I changed 1 meal at a time. It only took about 6 months and diabetes couldn't be measured in my system. The last meal and hardest one to change was my evening snack of peanut butter on whole grain toast.

I just read an informative article on Chris Kesslers site about whether low carb diets are good for you written by a dietition. It had some good points. I find I need to do low carb - I feel better. But it is not for everyone.

You can also go to www.glycemicindex.com. It is the site started by Prof. Jennie Brand-Miller who started the research into the low glycemic way of eating. You will notice the site origin is Australian. Because of this, some of the foods you look up don't pertain to the US. But it will give you some basic idea on the glycemic index/load of some the foods you like that may be similar. It also has a tab that shows you what books she has published on the subject. Check out some of the titles at your local bookstore to see if the information is what you need. That's what I did and I found a couple that where helpful. Hope this helps.

I will check into the website for the Paleo lifestyle. I agree with your dislike for the word "diet"; everyone has a "diet"; it's just that some are better than others. Thanks for the tip and help.

You might check out a Paleo lifestyle (I hate the word diet!) - there is a spark team for Paleo. Here's a link to a great website with lots of good recipes. theclothesmakethegirl.com/wellfed/

There are quite a few Low Carb and Diabetes Team here on Spark!! in the Diabetes Team threads on low Glycemic foods.... Check under Community/Spark Teams; and type in Low Carb or Glycemic Index (Low GI)

Does anyone out there in Spark Nation have some ideas on low carb and low glycemic index foods and diets? This was suggested by my Doctor and what I've found on-line so far hasn't been that informative or they want a price $$$. Any ideas would be greatly apprectiated and always remember 1 pound at a time, 1 day at a time...
