APHIL003....my Phys Therapist started me out on Core Strengthening exercises, as they play a significant role in this too. Check out Coach Nicole's Seated Core video on Spark here.

Do you have access to a lat pull-down machine? Doing front pull-downs wide will help.

Also, bent-over dumbbell rows are good ones.

Good posture can make me look 10 pounds lighter! Unfortunately, I sit at a desk all day and when I try to remind myself to sit up, it feels unnatural and uncomfortable ... which of course is proof positive that I need to work on it more!

Are there specific back/shoulder/neck exercises that can make this easier?

When you mentioned the back exercises...it brought to mind another tip a Phys Therapist gave me (as I was being seen for lower back issues!): when sitting at the computer desk I now use one of the rounded lumbar cushions; also in the car. Feeling it against my lower back reminds to sit upright! So VERY much better! emoticon
PS: I like you thumbs back...amazingly simple!

That's all I got. LOL!

I'm also very aware of how my seat is positioned in my car. It's easy to get out of alignment when your arms are forward. That's a great idea to make sure I am in correct alignment at stop signs!

Doing weight lifting exercises for back really helps, too. It's an area a lot of people don't work on because they can't see it. We are a people with stretched backs and tight shoulders because we spend some much time with our arms in front of us.

Love the little alignment trick from your blog, thank you!

Posture is tough for those of us who sit in front of a computer all day. At random intervals, I find myself leaning forward, back slumped, and shoulders forward. In fact, I sat that way so long without bothering to correct that it took some back and shoulder exercises to be able to sit in a correct posture position without it hurting a bit.

Driving is another task that is horrible for posture. How often do we find ourselves with head and neck forward? I adjusted my seat so the headrest is now at correct posture position, so whenever I stop at a stop light, I make a mental check - am I in the "grr, traffic!" position? - and put my head back to lightly rest against the head rest so my neck and shoulders relax.

Would love to read other posture tricks! It's one of the things I'm trying to work on and also working on teaching my kiddo, but it's a tough habit to break so tips and tricks are always welcome!

Starting: 41.1 BMI and extremely sedentary
Current: 28.0 BMI with strength-training and low-impact cardio
Mini-goal: 29.9 BMI (about 164 lb) - DONE on 8/6/14! I'm no longer obese!
Mini-goal: 5K walk or run
Mini-goal: 24.9 BMI (about 136 lb)
Mini-goal: half-marathon walk or run
GOAL: 23 BMI (about 125 pounds), fit and active

Hello everyone! I'm new to this board but not to Spark People. I'm using the SparkCoach program (it's pretty great, BTW), and one of the community challenges was to come to this board and discuss posture. It just so happens that years ago I posted a blog about how to find and maintain good posture, and I thought I would share it, if you don't mind: www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_

I'm really glad to have found this board! It's right up my alley!
