Definitely a Couch to 5K plan is the best way to transition into running. These programs work through progressively increasing intervals of running and walking and not only develop your fitness, but also give your leg muscles and tendons time to adapt to the impact of running.
Link in Zorbs' post.
These programs typcially take around 8 weeks, so if your 5K is in August, don't dawdle in starting now. Adaptation to impact is a slow process, and its better to make a gentle start now, than try to accelerate things at the end.
