Adding to what Ladystarwind said, you could do challenge courses (not like the high ropes courses). The course could be set up to have several different activities like jumping rope, jumping jacks, pushups (modified or regular), burpees, sprinting, etc.

Had another thought...talk with your Camp Director asap....They are frequently looking for new program ideas! Offer to be the Lead Counselor for an "Aerobic Exercise" group...only come up with a more creative name!!. With a set time frame during the day that way, you can incorporate YOUR favorite activities into the week instead of into your time off! LOL Make it something different every day: running, hiking, biking (if avail), canoeing, swimming, zumba, folk dance, obstacle course.... Facilitate challenges; and check out if there isa badge they can earn. Great opportunity to let the girls self-direct activities they are interested in learning too.

I worked as a camp counselor at a Girl Scout camp a long time ago and I'd say that you are physically active for most of the day. As someone else said, a lot depends on how the camp is set up. Depending on which sessions you are working, you could probably work in a hike with the girls. If there is a sports session, maybe ask for those sessions. Then, you are automatically working in a workout into your schedule. If there is a science based session, you could ask for those too. You could work in nature hikes. Do you have an iphone? If so, maybe download the mapmyrun or mapmywalk app. It's free. When you are walking from one place to another, track the walk. Every little bit will count and it will add up throughout the day.

When I worked at camp, the kids arrived on Sunday afternoon and left not long after lunch. We would get one hour off per day (except on Sunday and Friday) and one evening off during the week (except on Sunday and Friday). The day you had the evening off, you didn't get the one hour off. You could always do your workouts during your time off (cardio or strength training). It may be difficult, but you could always try to get up earlier and go for a run or something similar. I worked with counselors that got up before the campers to go for a run.

Having been a Camp Counselor in my younger years (Yea Girl Scouting!!), I think you will get plenty of exercise.... I know that for the camp I was at, we walked almost 10 minutes just to & from the Main Lodge for meals...three times a day! Also walked to/from the swimming area, and the archery area, and the Arts & Crafts buildings, and the showers...! Do you do that at home?? LOL

It will depend on how the camp is set up. If you have a choice ask for the Unit furthest from the Main area... And see how you are feeling for exercise after that first week WITH the girls!

Can you exercise with your group? Such as before the hike, teach them stretching exercises. During the hike, alternate walking with jogging/running.

I could see swimming contests involving lap work or even a contest where they "try to beat the counselor). You get 5 laps in while "playing" with them.

I can see an activity such as archery beginning with a couple of laps around the field. To get them better focused and get you the cardio activity you want. Again, it could easily be set up as a race.

Thanks for the advice! Since I will be a camp counselor there really isn't any 'break time'. I'm in charge of 8-10 kids 24/7, including nighttime. It is a 'camp' so I will be participating in most of the activities such as swimming, archery, kayaking, horseback riding, hiking, etc. It may not be my lap swimming but hopefully it will be enough!

Working as a counselor will give you a great amount of activity throughout the day, but it's not a replacement for exercise that gets your heart rate up into the cardio zone for at least 10 minutes at a time. Would it be possible to break your workout into 10-minute segments throughout the day? Perhaps you do 10 minutes before the day starts, 10 minutes somewhere during the day and then 10 minutes at the end of the day, which would give you 30 minutes of activity. Even if you could do this 3-4 days per week, it can keep your fitness level up so that you're not starting from ground zero when you get back into a regular routine at the end of the summer.

Hey guys! I will working as a residential girl scout camp counselor all summer long. This will leave me no time for exercise for about 1.5 months since I will be working from dawn until dusk.

Do you think working as a counselor will be enough? Do you think i will receive enough exercise?
