The shin is not where your IT band is. The IT band runs along the outside of your leg from hip to knee. Pain in the shin is generally a sign of shin splints. Here's an article on them: www.sparkpeople.com/resource/fitness_artic

I've been wondering about this too as I have started running about 4 weeks ago and tend to get pain midway thru the workout (C25K) in the upper middle area of my shin, near my knee. I'm trying to make sure I thorougly workout tension in my IT band because it hurts a lot after a run.

Landing with the heel first means there is nowhere for the impact to go but straight up the leg.

If you land with mid or forefoot first, then the small muscles in the foot, and the natural flexibility of the ankle will absorb a lot of the shock and impact.

Changing your stride is difficult - if you are not currently landing on your heel, don't change things.

Thank you. I did think it felt strange and when I watch athletes they seem to be running differently. To me. I am getting shin pain when I run and this time I am NOT giving up. I did wonder if it was technique. Sorry for such a basic question!

I do find it confusing about how to run as I run on my toes. Should I be putting heel down first?
