The way i started (and i was over 300lbs) was i did 3 days of tracking my normal eating. I was disgusted, i was eating on average 4000+ calories per day. So, halving that i knew i would lose weight as i was relatively active to begin with, walking the dogs and walking to work.

So, i did 2000, no problems then it got to the point where i was actually struggling to get to 2000 most days so i dropped it to 1800 then 1600.

So, i would recommend finding out how much you eat now, then dropping about a thousand calories per day if able, which if you were gaining about a pound a week, will mean you now lose a pound a week instead then use exercise to try and get an additional 500 caps burnt per day and that is 2lbs per week.

I adjust them as needed

I would track for a few days and eat what you normally would. then you will have an idea of the empty calories you are eating and see where to cut out. I find setting a 1 lb a week goal makes it easier to not go over whelmed , so i would start with that

Starting weight: 185

1st Goal- 170lbs -
DONE! 12/13/10

2nd Goal -160lbs-
DONE- 1/19/11

**Mini Goal**158 (No longer Obese!)

3rd Goal-150lbs -

4th Goal-140lbs -

5th Goal- 130lbs -

6th goal- 120lbs -

I am trying to figure out how to start going about getting healthier. I want to lose a good amount of weight in the long run. I just don't know what to set as my first goal. Should I track my activity and food for a while then figure out how much to lose or what's a good first step.

I have heard and seen on here and in most weight loss plans that losing 1-2lbs, per week is ideal for most, 20 minutes per day of some kind of activeness, and I need to track food and what I do when I am active.

Other than that I have no idea on how to set my first weight loss goal. Should I go for so many pounds per week or month? What's a good and realistic goal? 1 or 2 lbs. a week? More or less? I just have no idea and my main concern is setting too big of a goal, not reaching it and falling off the band wagon right away. I have done this before and its been a set back for me. I know I need to start getting healthier and sooner rather than later is better.

All my doctors say theirs time to reverse any damage and avoid hereditary problems that start around early thirties and can cause problems. For the record I am 28, young but not the youngest anymore and I am semi-active. When I need to be busy and get something done I am capable, its just not an every day thing. I have energy, just having a body that cant keep up is getting to me at times and what I want to do or enjoy in my life. Enough of me talking and time for any answers, advice, or recommendations from others.
