I wash my hands several times per day and I don't have a problem with being ill in the winter. I don't get flu shots. I do read Dr. Mercola's web site (he's a medical doctor). He's written a lot about having bad root canals done on a person's teeth, which he says can make many people have poor health. One Sparker wrote about how she was sick for 11 years and doctors treated her for so many ailments but it wasn't until she read that she might have had bad root canals done, that she went to a dentist who dealt with the issue. Sure enough, he found anaerobic bacteria up in her bone. She said after she was treated, she got well.
Dr. Mercola also writes a lot about being ill from gluten and/or sugar. He has a lot of interesting articles. My interest has been in Leaky Gut Syndrome, which he addresses.

Hi all,

I was just browsing this board because it seems to be me! I am tired all the time since I had colon cancer surgery back in September. It was such a long time ago it seems impossible but the doctors think because of lack of exercise and the surgery takes your body up to a year to mend!

Debbie I read about your problems with exercise, did you know they do have chair exercises that are great! I don't know if Spark has any but you can do a search and find some to try. Good luck!

Here is to warm sunny days so we will all feel great!

Whatever is going around this year is wicked. I'm on my second round of upper respiratory/sinus infection. I thought I was over it, but a few weeks later, same symptoms, back to the clinic, back on antibiotic, energy nil. This is getting old.

Some years are so wicked, it's ridiculous! My kids are always sick--from Sept through June...until we're out of school again!

I stay pretty healthy by always getting flu shots, washing my hands all the time, taking extra vitamin c, avoiding acid-blockers that kill beneficial stomach bacteria, gargling antiseptic mouthwash, fixing my own food at home instead of ingesting others' germs eating fast food/restaurant food, and most importantly--DAILY EXERCISE.

And sometimes when I feel myself getting sick I just say "NO." I refuse to be sick...ergo, I don't get sick. Sorta like a mental placebo for my immune system. :) Find what works for you & stick with it!

Have been on antibiotics twice since Feb. for strep throat - this go around it is strep w/bronchitis. No energy...every time I start to feel a little better I seem to get hit again. So yes....it just seems to linger

I staved off the nasty flu bug going around till I got back from my course last month. It had been threatening before the course started. Eventually it hit, and hard! But that was OK. Left me weak as a kitten. All I could manage was gentle yoga, soI did that. Today for the first time I dared try a Leslie Sansone 20 min walking video and that was OK. Might try something more strenuous tomorrow. Its good to be feeling human again. I think I may have lowered my immunity by getting very tired during the 3 weeks of the course, walking 12-15 k steps across town most days and not sleeping well.

I'm in the midwest, too. I feel ya! I had strep, that went to bronchitis on it's way to pneumonia. 11 days later, I'm feeling 150% better, but my lungs are still not clear.

Today I was able to walk up 3 flights of stairs without a coughing fit. A milestone. I can't wait to get back to my previous level of health & fitness.

This year we have been passing colds around the family and it doesn't seem to stop. My husband spent three weeks in the hospital with infections. I think it is some particularly bad bugs this year. We live in the Seattle area and, whereas it has been dark and rainy, it has not been particularly bad. It is always dark and rainy in the winter.

I experience the same pain issues with my back. Currently I go to aqua therapy and have noticed an improvement, decrease in pain and increased in my mobility and tolerance.

I am disabled with a ton of ailments and medications a mile long - only a slight exaggeration. I can track my food and do everything on Spark except for exercise regularly. When I exercise I lose weight. When I don't exercise, I stay the same or gain a bit. Trouble is, if I walk even just 3 times week, my low back becomes incredibly painful. I stretch. I warm up. I cool down and stretch again. Still after a couple of days, my back is hurting and I can[t walk. I am going to ask my MD about some massage or physical therapy to get me over this hump. That's my situation. I hope everyone finds the key to breaking through to more success.

Hmmm... another thought.... might you be getting some mold/mildew symptoms?

if you live in an area where either are prevalent, you might want to see if there is any chance that some has crept onto the walls behind your furniture.

Either wear a mask or get someone else to pull those aside and check them... maybe spray with some lysol or wash with a bleach solution (careful of paint and walpapers, etc. if using the bleach....) and let it dry thoroughly.

I used to get a ton of wild allergy symptoms in my old house... when we moved, we found out that walls behind the backs of a few dressers, book cases, etc. that faced the windows/elements had mildew/mold on the back of them... and once we got that cleared out and moved OUT of the space, no more symptoms.....

I hadn't throught about that, but it is certainly worth checking!

not scientific but have a theory that when you are getting healthy you start to detox and rubbish that your body was holding on to gets released and you feel ill.

I have found that allergy testing has helped me greatly. When my body isn't having to fight allergens; it has more energy to heal and renew, both physically and emotionally. I stay away from known allergens and foods that hurt me, and I treat the unknown ones with physician recommended OTC supplies. One other thing that has helped me is a steamer for my carpet; however make sure not to linger while you steam or the dampness left will be a mildew haven.

Bolster your immune system: more garlic, and perhaps more vitamin C

As someone mentioned, more germ blocking. Wipe down surfaces with lysol, don't use kleenex more than once (if this is a money problem, then google how to disquise a toilet paper roll as a kleenex box -- frugal ways to hide that roll!)

Perhaps mist with eucalyptus -- we find this helps with keep sinuses a bit clearer while sleeping.

Take a soaking bath with a bit of peppermint oil to stimulate your energy center.

I'll echo one of the first posts - are you eating enough? Or alternatively, is there another chronic stress in your life (not getting enough sleep, emotional stress, over-exercising, etc?).

I was ill nearly all of last year - constant colds, nausea, headaches, digestive upsets, even migraines, which I've never had before. Ever since I reached a place where I was happy with my size, and building strength and stamina in my workouts - suddenly, bam, I was getting sick all the time. I didn't 'go off my diet', I was maintaining well, with a slight rise in weight due to not being able to exercise as regularly.

I decided I needed to rest and eat more (and more carbs). It has taken 6 months to get my energy back to somewhat normal (still some room for improvement). I am doing more and exercising again, sleeping better most of the time, back to eating mostly good food and fewer indulgences. The only negative side effect is that I am heavier now than I've ever been (hence I'm here on Spark). So maybe don't make such a drastic change as I did over the winter months!

Anyway - I feel much better and much healthier now at obese bmi than I did last year at a healthy bmi. This time I aim to lose it more sensibly. I'm eating plenty of carbs now and trying to pay attention to protein, which seems to be low if I eat to appetite (but then, my kidneys are not working at full capacity, so maybe I can't eat lots of protein).

I read it's good to take regular diet breaks where you eat at maintenance (still of healthy foods, mostly) for two weeks then go back on your diet. I think the diet breaks are every 8 - 12 weeks, if still quite heavy, more like every 4 weeks if getting close to goal. If you are eating below maintenance calories constantly for months or years (like I was for two years) your body starts to conserve energy by ignoring less essential tasks - your immune system is one of these things. Keeping you alive is more important, than keeping you in peak health.

Ah, sorry - I have written loads, and all about me. Thanks if you are still reading. I think basically what I was trying to say is, make sure you are eating enough in general, or if you are low carb, you might want to up those a bit (same goes for low fat, or low protein). If your diet is good, then make sure you are not over training, or are getting enough sleep.

I hope you can turn this around and feel better soon.

I really think the key is breaking the cycles, both the germ and the run-down cycles.

Breaking the germ one by hand washing & door nob & computer keyboard sanitizing, and REALLY taking good self care -- extra sleep, good food, vitamins. But a chance for extra SLEEP and chicken soup (or equivalent of non-meat varieties for those so inclined) and lots of fruits an veges.... what is not to like!

AND if you can find a patch of sun, make like a cat or dog and curl up in it or sit and read.

FEEL BETTER, everyone!!! It WILL get better. Just don't try to go back to work/exertions too soon!

I have had the same problem! I'm slowly getting better, but it is a tough road. I hope that you and your family get better soon! Definetly get as much sleep as you can, wash your hands often, get some vitamin C, and eat chicken soup. That's what my doctor has told me to do anyway.

I rarely get sick myself. I had my first cold of the year a week ago (when it was just starting to warm up). Are you eating enough? I know when I wasn't I got sick more often. Make sure to drink lots and take it easy.

I can't read all the posts, but we have had a lot of illness too.
The Superbug or Super Mono? It has been called that.

My daughter and I both contracted some kind of virus last July. I ran the gamut of symptoms, but overwhelming fatigue, nausea, and sleepiness, were top 3 on the list. We could not stay awake. I have gradually overcome most of it, but my daughter was lagging behind. She felt much better but caught a head cold in NY in December, and has been sick since that, 4 months. Main symptom is ear and sinus pain. There is colored mucous, and leakage from her ears.
Doctors and ENT's disagree on her diagnosis. It may be a Sympathetic Nerve Disorder is one suggestion. Her eardrums rupture, and heal by the time she sees the ENT's. They say she has no sign infections, no sign of rupture. Her PC doctors say she does, and that they look very painful, pussy, and red, then they rupture. Antibiotics do nothing, Gabapentin is making her too drowsy to function, but not helping. Pain killers not taking pain away.
She takes Vitamins C,D,E, and Olive Leaf, and Minerals when she can. I am at a loss what to do next. Nothing is working.

Seem to need this link, fought one virus from November to February with infusions until I got another virus requiring 10 days inpatient visit. Looks like chemo finally killed first virus but picked up something bad a week ago and got to enjoy 4 days in hospital.

Just wanted to follow discussion to see if anything good comes up.

I don't have time to read this whole thread, but I must say that your initial post was a real God-send for me, just because I've been going through the same thing and wondering if something was seriously wrong with me. I've never been this sick in my life. I've done everything I can think of to overcome it, to no avail. And of course, everyone has there sure-fire plan to wellness, but again, nothing has worked for me. I'm just getting over another three-week bout and feeling better, and I too am hoping that the warmer weather will help me kick this crazy sickness!

Went through this a few years back, and it was HORRIBLE. I'm one of those people that, if I get a 'cold' it goes into my chest and 3 months later I am still dealing with the bronchitis and asthma. So.... I do what it takes to STAY AWAY from getting the first colds. Knock on wood (and thank the Lord!) I've been totally healthy from these for about 15 months... and I think I've figured out what works for me... and will share it with you.

My doctor and I reached an agreement on the 'repeating cold' thing -- if it comes back 3 times, I call and go in. Because then it is most likely no longer just a cold, it's now almost certainly a secondary infection for me. BUT while I am waiting, I drink all the water and fluids I can, and I'll agree on the chicken soup and -- even better for me! -- Chinese Combination Wonton soup and/or hot and sour soup. I think it is is all the garlic and chicken broth and veges, but it really does help!

I ditto what everyone is saying about a basically healthy eating, water-drinking, sleeping, self-care routine ALL the time, not just after a cold strikes. Lots of fruit and veg, decent amounts of protein and whole grains. I try to take multivitamins and extra C, D, E and calcium each day but often forget... but I think they are really only a supplement for the healthy basic diet... so I don't freak if I miss a few days of those.

ON A PRACTICAL LEVEL...

My husband works at a huge international airport in a rental car facility as a manager. WE GET EXPOSED TO EVERYTHING!!!! Two years ago, I told my husband, "Nothing personal, at the first sign YOU are getting a cold, or the first sense that I might be getting a cold, I'm moving into the guest room. And using a different bathroom. And you stay OUT of those places!". And I insisted that he NOT touch the coffee pot, fridge door, etc.when he was sick BECAUSE it was very clear to me that while I could control me, my beloved, not so much! I'd much rather treat him like the King of England than treat me like a plague victim!!!!

It has made a HUGE difference. Now we shake stuff... or it just goes away before it takes hold. If you have the ability to self-isolate... or isolate the person who is sick, DO IT. He pooh-poohed it at first... until I didn't get 3 colds he did... and then he started doing it himself as needed. And suddenly -- he's getting over his colds and not getting more! Yes, It is helping. And who DOESN'T like to feel pampered and cared for, with encouragement to get extra rest, when they are sick! EVERYONE wins!

As far as the work outs -- agree what others have said. If you are sick, you need to listen to your body. The yoga and especially deep-breathing exercises are WONDERFUL for clearing your lungs, as is moderate or slow walking. If you find you are coughing when you go outside in the cold, you might have a touch of bronchitis or secondary asthma... talk with your med professional.

AND... those of you who live in the land of frozen tundra -- do you have full spectrum lamps? You might need some extra sunlight....

My 2 cents... and a few extra $$$ as well! Stay healthy, everyone!!!!!

I had been going through the same thing. I was sick off and on from the end of January through mid March. I got congested, cleared up, got bronchitis (took antibiotics/use inhaler), cleared up, got congested with sinus pain/pressure, cleared up, then I ended up with some stomach bug. Everything over the counter was used, but it wasn't until I took a couple of days off (working nights in 20-35 degree weather wasn't speeding up recover either) and rested, really rested, that I got better. I stayed in the house and the bed mostly and allowed my body to "get over it". I felt much better and have been symptom free for a few weeks now.

One day at a time!

To be honest, my advice is to stop over-disinfecting everything. Not exposing your body to natural bacteria and other things makes you less resistant to them. I think that's a huge reason why kids and some adults are more likely to get sick nowadays, long and short-term. I'm not trying to be nasty, this is just my story and opinion on the matter.

I have no allergies, and the only thing that has ever brought me down was strep throat about twice in the past 3 years. I don't remember the last time I had a cold or the flu; I was probably around 13 or 14 years old. I rub my eyes, pick my teeth with my fingernails; heck, I'll even pick my nose [with a tissue] if I have some campers in there, haha.

The only things I have to deal with are IBS, which I was born with, and some bad tendons in my right knee and ankles (one because I sprained my right ankle when I was in junior high very, very badly). But the tendons I can avoid pain with by exercising them properly and not straining them.

The evidence I have for this theory is that my mother was never very "clean" about anything. Not that I recommend raising a child in dirty conditions, by any means! My mother also grew up the youngest of five children in a rural farm area, circa 1950. No antibiotics, no cold medicine and the doctor is only for emergencies kind of thing. A warm washcloth on the forehead, soak your feet and some Vick's Vaporub on the chest, you'll be fine. That's how she raised me. Of course, I had all my immunizations and whatnot. I'm not a fan of "flu shots", though. The flu isn't ever going to kill me, even if I did get it, but there is a (very small) chance of a flu shot ruining my life or severely impacting it.

On the other hand, my father grew up with a mother who is a hypochondriac, is on tons of medications and treatments and is always "sick" with something. Which means my father also complains of being "sick" all the time as well. He, however, didn't pass this on to me and favored letting me "tough it out" when reasonable to do so.

I don't think it's "too late" to start building up resistance to everyday antigens and other things...we aren't made to live in a sterile environment. There are too many things that can make us sick to disinfect them all. That's why our bodies have defense systems, and I think we should let them do their job instead of trying to prevent them from it.

For the record, I eat a lot of garlic in my recipes and drink as much water as I can hold down. I try to get a lot of fruit in me, and I really, really like protein bars as I can't handle a lot of fatty red meats and such (greasy food triggers my IBS).

I enjoy cooking a lot, and I think that might be another reason why I'm more resistant. I buy fresh ingredients rather than buying a pre-packaged meal.

Though I do enjoy Taco Bell and Chinese takeout regularly! I think it's important to keep a balance between "healthy" and "indulgence". It keeps me from falling off the wagon, so to speak. As long as I mind my calories/fat/carbs/sodium and stay on track, I can pretty much eat whatever I want.

I've lost 31 pounds since December this way!

I think the dry heat indoors and the windows shut tight make colds harder to get rid of...especially if you have any type of respiratory problems. Try airing out the house, wiping down surfaces (especially phones) with disinfectant. Do some spring cleaning and wash pillows or buy new ones. Use a humidifier to help the qualify of the air. And you can buy nasal saline solutions to use at work that don't have medication and are okay to use frequently.

Hi, I would recommend you getting a check up with a hormone doctor. You are probably low on hormones as well as Vitamin D. I use natural hormones as well as Echinacea a herbal supplement which helps fight infection like colds, and upper respiratory. Getting rest and living a stress free life helps quite a bit.

Last year I battled endless colds, so many I lost track. Tough winter. This year not a single one. Here's what I did:
1. Rest. I mean really rest. Sleep. As much as possible for 2 weeks. No running, intense cardio or the sorts. This will help you get over your cold.
2. Eat at least 2 fruits and at least 4-5 servings of vegetables-cooked and raw-especially salads and spinach, peppers, the good stuff. Limit sugar to 150 calories tops per day, if any. No junk food. This will strengthen your immune system.
3. Do not touch your face, eyes, mouth, or eat anything with dirty hands. Sanitize with diluted down bleach in spray bottle surfaces at work, car, home. This will prevent re-infection.

Give your body 4 weeks to recover following the above. You will get better!

Here are a few suggestions, fwiw.
Lots of homemade chicken broth, plain and in soups (it works!).
Mega doses of probiotics, lots of different strains.
Air out your house as often as the temperatures allow.
Clean with vinegar, hydrogen peroxide or alcohol based solutions because chemical antibacterial formulas may be seeping into your system and messing with your flora.

Hi all!
I too can't seem to get better. I have been on a "downward spiral" healthwise for the past year. I've put on almost 100 lbs. but all my blood work and medical testing show nothing. I did have and was treated for h. pylori (had for 5 years finally was treated this past January). I am not sure if it messed with my thyroid, causing the weight gain or what. I was extremely dizzy, low blood pressure, low blood sugar, and a general feeling of malaise. I now have the cold/flu that won't go away. Just in time for the warm weather, you know? Hopefully it's finally on its way out b/c I want to get outside and walk and do yard work and exercise to help in getting this extra weight off.

I nearly lost my job this past winter for being sick. Let me tell you a quick story;

In early November, I had a flu shot. Ok, thinking I was good to go for the winter, Jan.1, 2014 I got sick. And, STAYED sick. Here's what happened: Given the flu made me sweat so bad, endless nights of no sleep, being too weak to even make myself some tea - my potassium levels plummeted. So, month two and three drag on - I thought it was still the flu. When I would call in to 'Ask a Nurse', they told me not to come in, that there was nothing that could be done with this years' flu strain and to just sit it out. Finally, after 3.5 months of being ill, I got an appointment, had some blood work done and the dr.'s were amazed at how long I had been basically functioning. My blood work was all over the map. Having the flu and losing so many electrolytes through sweating and being malnourished was an open door for everything else to go haywire.

My thyroid was goofy. Triglycerides amok. My body simply quit producing potassium and magnesium was no where to be found.

So, GET YOUR BLOOD WORK DONE! It can tell you many things. I am finally getting over the total feeling of weakness, disorientation, etc. Our body functions are a big deal.

No one at work speaks to me anymore. They don't understand that I was not just belly aching, that I was incredibly sick. They think that I am just a whiner and they have been incredibly cruel. But, hey, it's a paycheck.

By the way, I gained 7 pounds because I could not get out of bed. That makes this all the more frustrating. I have been on potassium pills for 2 weeks now, and starting to exercise again. But, seriously, I have been knocked off my butt due to all of this. People, just take good care of yourselves and educate yourselves the best that you can on how our body works. I never would have guessed that potassium levels were such a huge ruler in our well being.

I'm in the same boat. I've been trying to get into shape and work towards running a 5k. I'm doing a couch to 5k program-and everytime I get to week 5 (a 20 minute run) I get some sort of chest cold that knocks me out for 2 weeks. I just can't get past this! So frustrating!

I have not had the flu or a cold in almost 30 years...

In addition to the other good advice already given, I would suggest taking a probiotic like Culturelle. You can also get good bacteria into your system by drinking kefir and eating yogurt. I read somewhere that about 70% of your immune system is located in your intestines! My allergist recommends a daily probiotic supplement.

I am very good about washing my hands. I used to work in a medical environment. I wipe my steering wheel regularly with antibacterial wipes. I wipe down the remotes and telephones. Perhaps I should do the remotes more often, as our dog lays on the couch. But still, I am the only one in the family who gets sick like I do. The dog sleeps with our son and he is fine. I think our dog got sick from me this week! He was sneezing and hacking in a dog-like kind of way and slept a lot.

It certainly is majorly important to clean and scrub ourselves and our homes and cars, but not getting enough rest still brought me down. I even take vitamin D, tried everything we're supposed to do nutritionally and cleanliness-wise to get well and stay that way. I think it was the rough winter too.

we had that same thing last year on the west coast USA. I had coughing fits for 3 months straight until summer hit. Some say pollen, some say mold, some say a reparatory infection, some suspect whooping cough. Hard to say…..who knows what effects fukushima is having on our health?

I live in New Zealand and there have been some horrible infections going around, and it isn,t winter here yet! My workplace has been decimated by some kind of respiratory infection that just doesn't want to go away people are still suffering from it six weeks later.

It's hard to get adequate rest when you are coughing at night. So I agree that you need to take extra care. But I agree with the exercisers, if it's above your chest, exercise won,t hurt, and might even help with sleep. Even if it's just pool time, the stretching and the support of the water is wonderfully therapeutic. Remember simple remedies like vicks on your chest or as inhalations make it easier to get a restful sleep.
Cheer up guys, over there spring is coming. Here it's autumn and only winter to look forward to.

If everyone is sick repeatedly, then you are probably sharing germs. Remember to wash your hands before handling or preparing food, touching your face or someone else. Our hands are the dirties objects on the face of the earth! No kidding. Even if they look clean or you just washed them, they can be really filthy. Door knobs get touched by all hands and are usually dirty so if you washed your hands in the bathroom, then opened the door, you have probably contaminated your hands again. So, just be mindful of opportunities the germs have to make you sick. Wash your hands with warm soapy water for a total of 20 seconds, then rinse and dry. Instead of using a towel to dry with use paper towels. Towels in the bathroom are not clean. If someone did not do a good job of washing their hands, then they contaminated the towel when they dried their hands. There are lots of ways to get contaminated. When was the last time you cleaned your steering wheel in your car? Never! So it is really dirty! Phones are just nasty. So, wash your hands frequently. And cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough to prevent your germs from becoming airborn. A recent study found that germs can live in the enviornment for two hours. So someone can cough or sneeze, leave, and two hours later the next person can get contaminated without even being aware.

I see there are many msg - I am new to this site but thought I would give you some suggestions
Do you take a multi-vitamin? Raw one for Women is a good one and unprocessed? (DrVita has a fabulous multi I am going to try as well go to drvita.com) We do not get the nutrition from our food as in the past - something is missing in your diet or you are not assimilating nutrients properly in the upper intestine. I suggest you take a good probiotic - first thing in the am on an empty stomach so it can go straight to the upper intestine since it is enteric coated - Not all Probiotics are created equal - they must be enteric coated to get past stomach acid. Take the refrigerated Ultra Flora - 30 billion especially since you need an immune boost - our gut houses 75% of our immune system - you could go down to 17 Billion if you want in the future - I don't -- the more healthy gut bacteria the better off we are. And finally you cannot be sick like this and not have adrenals that are suffering - Emerald Adrenal Health is also raw - I take 1 per day but I am not sick - did get flu this year though and doubled up on everything for a month and got well quickly. And I also suggest taking Colloidal Silver - daily, to help prevent illness and get rid of what is hanging on. I use a spray one that goes under the tongue, but it just healed a bad blister from a burn, too. - I use all these products daily. And lastly take 5 - 10 minutes a day and meditate and when think about healing "chi" entering your body and all is well. Hope this all helps.

I am a vegetarian so I focus on above average protein in my diet. In addition, I take vitamin C supplements, drink lots of water, wash my hands and use hand sanitizer obsessively, drink coffee and hot tea, have a glass of red wine each night, and a square of dark chocolate.I don't get sick or if I start feeling sniffly, it immediately goes away.

I am lucky to say I hardly ever get a cold in the winter, never had the flu.
The credit for my health goes to my far infrared sauna, which sits in my bedroom. I use that twice a week in the winter months, even occasionally in the summer. It rids you of all the toxins, for extra help with congestion, add a few drops of peppermint oil to a small water bath and place on the seat beside you. It will make the sauna smell great and you inhale the peppermint to clear up you cold.

I would best describe myself as a bad vegan, my wife and I eat at least 1 salad a day, real lettuce not the iceberg crap. Romaine, spinach, endive, arugula. This we top with mushrooms, peppers, carrots, onion, garlic, radish, broccoli, cauliflower, beets, and pomegranates or blueberries. Top this with a little sweet apple cider vinegar and olive oil and this will be the best meal you have all day. Get rid of all dairy products, eat meat occasionally.
Been healthy 2 years out of 51 and enjoying life again.

I've been drinking Echinacea tea and started taking zinc. Also have been taking Sambucol throughout the winter. I think I needed all of it. I might make some ginger tea tonight. I also got some Vapo Salve for my nose from a natural product company. And soaked in a hot tub with menthol, camphor, peppermint, Echinacea, ginseng, and tea tree oil salts (may sound fancy but is just Village Naturals from Walmart). I think everything I have done has helped keep me going.

I had similar problem over last 3 months...constantly feeling as though I was about to come down with something but as I've been eating more cereal to up my vitamin intake and drinking echinacea tea, it didn't really manage to take hold. Think I might have been feeling better sooner if I had actually came down with cold properly...

Now I'm having other issues which may actually be from too much B6... ever get the feeling that you just cannot win???

This past winter I was always on the VERGE of getting a cold, but I refused!
I don't know if this would help anyone else but here's what I did:

I drank a lot of hot teas:
1. 1 Tb Apple Cider Vinegar, 1 Tb Honey, and a cup of hot water; you'll have to get use to the taste if you haven't had apple cider vinegar before. It really helped me to keep from being sick

2. I made Ginger Tea too. I always chop up a fresh ginger and steep it in hot water. Add honey if the pure ginger taste is too much.

3. Any herbal tea that's specifically for colds also helps

and I took zinc! It's even better if you can get your hands on the lozenges kind, that way you can have it in your mouth/throat area longer.

If you have already become ill and are stuffy get a bowl of hot water (until it's steamy) put a towel over your head and bowl and breathe in the steam.

Also!! in this Spring in-between weather wear scarves! It helps keep your throat warm and keeps you from getting sick. I use to roll my eyes about this, but it helps a lot so I've found.

I feel tired a lot. my DH had the flu in FEb and then Strep in march. I did not get either, but i still felt tired and lethargic.
i had oral surgery at the end of feb so i was on atibiotics. i think that may have helped prevent strep. but i am looking forward to the weather warming up/ that should improve our health.

One year I had the same problem. I could not get over being sick. I thought I was eating well. And I was exercising. At the time I was eating vegetarian. My family nurse practitioner told me that it was protein that helps the body heal and to make sure I was eating enough protein. She suggested that I eat chicken soup, which was an easy to digest form of protein that she recommended since I had not been eating meat. Since that time I have not had the problem. I decided that for me I needed more protein than I was getting the way I was eating vegetarian. I find that I need to eat at the higher end of my protein requirements on the spark recommendations. I don't know if that will help you, but since I have been making sure that I get enough protein I have not had a long hard-to-get-over illness. I also do other things to be healthy, so I am not saying that protein is the only thing, but for me it seems to be key.

In the past I struggled with this issue a lot. I have some CFS/Fibromyalgia and seem to always e dealing with a somewhat compromised immune system, catching every darn cold that came my way. However this past year I've only had one head cold due to some preventative measures I've put in place for myself:

1. Getting a good night's sleep. After literally decades of not sleeping well, I finally gave in and resorted to some sleep aids to help me get a good night's rest. I found that after a few years of doing this I was able to wean myself from prescription sleep aids to OTC to nothing. Just a theory but maybe after a few years of consistent sleep my body was "retrained" to get a full night's rest.

2. I take a liquid oxygen supplement: o2spabar.com/. Maybe it's hooey, maybe it's the placebo effect. However I saw a marked difference in how many colds I got before and after I added that to my daily routine, and I had already tackled the sleep issues and was resting consistently.

3. The few times I do start to feel a tickle in my throat, as others have mentioned I start on a zinc lozenges or oral Zicam ASAP.

Susan727 I was just thinking the same thing today, as I just came down with my 2nd chest infection in the last 6 weeks. I know I am eating more nuts than I used to, for the health benefits, so I hope I dont have an allergy to them. But I was reading recently how important it is to have more GOOD bacteria in the intestines, than BAD bacteria, and that it can actually alleviate asthma, allergies, depression, headaches, moods, and loads of other ailments. Whereas, parasites can actually thrive in the Bad bacteria. Research has shown that diets rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and nuts have more GOOD bacteria, than diets of meats, sugars, and fats. So I am aiming to do that, and drink plenty water to wash out toxins. But it is important to rest and not stress when your immune system is weak. Disappointing though, because I was really on a roll working out at the fitness center. Good luck with your journal. I think thats a great idea!

Here in Oklahoma, there is an upper respiratory infection that lingers for weeks. It is a virus, so antibiotics are only used if you have a secondary infection. I was sick for about six weeks myself. It came and went. Weird.
I am a pediatric RN and am concerned we will see more of this kind of lingering illness, as well as germs that don't respond to antibiotics anymore. More and more hospitalized patients have to be in isolation due to their contagious infections.
Do take care of yourself and don't try to exercise while ill. Give yourself time to recover first. Eat well, lots of fruits, veges and whole grains. Rest as needed, for as long as needed. (That's what I did not do.)

My sympathies to all of you. Between the harsh winter and being indoors and exposed to multiple bugs makes it hard to stay healthy!.

I would focus on eating right. Lots of fruits and vegetables and fluids. Try to make sure you are getting the best possible nutrition.

On sick days, no exercise. Your body needs rest not stress! On days when you are feeling better, easy walking, light weights and maybe some yoga.

A few other things that can help: Keep a humidifier running. I have one on my desk at work, one in bedroom ad one in my living room. Dry nasal tissues crack and bleed and a dry ,sore nose is an open invitation to every virus passing though!

Sanitize door knobs, light switches, toilet handles, sink knobs, stove knobs and all of the little things that you touch everyday. Do the same thing at work.

Try to not touch your face. Many viruses are spread from our hands to our mucus membranes. So touching our noses, mouths and eyes are a way to introduce viruses into our systems.

Zinc has been proven to interfere with the replication of cold viruses. If you use it when you first start to feel symptoms you can abort or lessen the length and severity of a cold. It can make you sick to your stomach so limit lozenges to one every 2 or 3 hours.

Hand washing ...what else can you say? As often as possible.

Take care of yourselves. Hope you are feeling better soon.

Last spring I went down with one virus after another, 3 different ones, which knocked me out for 6 weeks, despite good eating and exercise. This year for the last month or so I have been swallowing vitamin C to ward off the nasty flu bug that is circulating. So far it has worked. I am also exercising more than last year when I began to make movement a priority. Problem is, if you are ill enough you shouldnt or cant exercise. I did some yoga when I couldnt do anything else.

When you feel that first little tickle in your throat that warns of a cold coming on suck on zinc and vitamin C lozenges. Let them melt in your mouth and slide down your throat but don't chew and swallow. Do this every 3-4 hours. Go for about 75mg/day. Too much can upset your stomach. Drink a lot of fluids and go to bed early. The zinc interferes with viral replication and gives your immune system a chance to catch up.

I haven't come down with a full on cold or flu in many years.

I had this problem this winter as well. I was sick in and off for eight weeks straight, with only a few days reprieve in between. Finally, I thought maybe I wasn't actually contracting multiple illnesses over and over again, and I went to the doctor. It turned out that I had a nasty sinus/respiratory infection and had to go on 875mg of Augmentin twice a day for 10 days. I'm FINALLY feeling myself again!

In past, I'd be lucky if I caught one cold/flu a year. However, this season has been bad for me. I've already had three colds this season and that IS very unusual. I eat right. I get regular exercise, but I do seem to be susceptible to colds this season.

I do think the bitter cold temps many of us experienced this winter has caused our immune systems to weaken. If the cold weather isn't to blame for a weakened immune system, then there must be an increase in the number of germs being spread around.

Are people remembering to wash their hands frequently ?

I will say to the OP, it's not you. Not only have I been sick more times than is usual, several people around me have been sick multiple times too.

I have asthma (contracted later in life) and lots of sinus problems and as a result stay feeling poorly most of the time.

I'm honestly beginning to think that a lot has to do with foods that I eat and that I may have a food allergy. I have noticed when I eat properly and cut out junk foods that I don't have nearly as many issues so I'm thinking of keeping a journal and try to pinpoint what I'm eating when my problems occur.

Sometimes it can take a while for the source of the cold, flu or other illness to be determined. It took over a month for them to realize it was an infection in my tooth and jaw that was causing sinus issues.

I recommend that if you aren't feeling better after a month, ask for more tests, x-rays, scans, visit a specialist. Don't stop searching for the answer and ultimately the treatment.

I am feeling a bit better after reading this. I seem to go through periods where I am getting sick often. I am currently struggling with iron deficiency and suspect this has been an issue for my body for much longer than I would have thought. It is extremely frustrating to be laid low often by the common cold.

I am one that rarely get sick... well, I guess I spoke too soon. I have had a cold / flu for three weeks now. I went to the dr because of a very swollen gland behinds my ear. Dr thought at first MUMPS!!! But, no, just an infection and now on antibiotics. I am a winter LOVER, so no blame on winter from me... just lots of virus' going around! Hang in there!

I had that problem throughout August-October last year. At the same time, I had a horrible tooth-ache. After many doctor/dentist visits, they found out my tooth was infected down to the bone. I was put on multiple rounds of high dose antibiotics and underwent an extensive root canal. It took months to feel better. And for a while before they found out what it was, I felt like I had a never ending sinus infection.

I agree with the posts to let yourself heal. Take it easy, get lots of rest and lots of water/hydration. Take exercising slow and don't beat yourself up if you aren't well enough to exercise. Eat healthy foods as they will help your body get the nutrients it needs which helps healing.

The rule of thumb I've always gone by is if the cold is neck up and you aren't running a fever, you should be (check with doc of course) ok to exercise. If the cold is neck down, probably best not to exercise.

I think this year has been particularly brutal in the cold and flu department. I caught a gnarly one and was pretty much sick as a dog for the month of December. My singing voice has not yet come back completely. Then... In January, I was bitten by a bat and had to go through the rabies vaccinations, which took a month and felt like the flu, and then, three weeks ago, I stumbled at a party and wrenched my knee... However, I have still been doing laps in the pool and and tracking... always with the tracking. I tell myself 'It's a life management tool." ::smile:: I think the thing is just showing up for yourself, listening to and honoring your body and doing what it tells you to. Even if it is telling you to 'take it slow...

If you are sick, let your body focus its energy on recovering, and not on burning calories or even tracking them. Sleep and fluids, for me, are the best medicines. I really don't worry about working about if I'm 1)feverish 2) coughing badly 3) vomiting (obviously!) or feeling like I'm going to vomit, 4) completely exhausted, 5) have a really bad headache. It just does not help any of those conditions. If I've got a runny nose or I'm stuffy or my throat hurts a bit and I'm not feverish, I go for it. If I'm tired but not feel like I'm going to trip over my feet, I work out and usually feel better. I try to be really cautious and listen to my body and stop working out if I it's making me feel worse because I don't want to hurt myself. Just use your judgment and err on the side of caution.

I got the flu this winter which was awful... Now I have a cold that I can't shake so far. Exercise just makes me cough uncontrollable and now I feel it in my chest..ugh! I have my first 5k that is on 4/5...I may just run/walk it now depending on how much longer this lasts :( I've had some coworkers that have been sick every other week with some kind of cold, etc. all winter long...seems to just be a harsh winter all around!

It has been a nasty winter. We have gotten pretty lucky in our house this year, but suffered through a lot of it last year. Try to get enough sleep and fluids and to not overdo it. As far as any connection between eating better and getting sick more often I would remind everyone that correlation is not causation. It has been an incredibly cold crappy winter and that means we have all been closed in together, sharing the same air longer and more intensely this year than most. In the end, it just has to do with which pathogens you are exposed to and what immunity you may already have to those pathogens. My general rule regarding exercise is that if it is above the neck level (allergies, colds, sinus headaches, etc) then I try to take some advil and stay on track as much as possible (always listen to your body though). If it is below the neck (i.e. fever, 'chest cold', GI disturbances, etc) then I lay low, try to treat the symptoms, and hold off on exercising. If you are vomiting or have diarrhea, then start with only clear liquids until you can hold those down before moving on to full liquids and then on to bland foods.

I've been sick a lot too! Over the past 7 months I've had eye infections, colds, nosebleeds, chills, body aches, migraines, abdominal pains... and no matter what I try to do to get good sleep it's just not happening (exercise, yoga, avoiding caffeine, sleeping in a dark room, no electronics in the bedroom, baths at night, going to bed early, opening windows to "air out" the house, running a humidifier, drinking decaf tea). At least I haven't had the flu yet! I stopped drinking anything that wasn't water or decaf tea to try to stay hydrated. Combine that with the brutal Midwest cold and grey weather, it's hard to keep in a chipper mood.

I was asking myself the same thing. This is the first winter where I have been eating healthier and I seem to be sick more often. I had the flu in January and have had a sinus infection for about 3 weeks. I think it's just the year, I have heard a lot of people have been getting sick this year.

With this terribly cold winter (mid-West, at least) my family and I and several friends just can't seem to shake being sick. It has been flu, colds, strep, fever ... you name it, we have all had it over and over again for months. Hoping with the warm up we can get outside and get well - does that make sense? Anyone else struggling with this? And how do you keep up healthy eating and exercise when 3 days out of 7 you are just plain sick, and not getting good sleep! I'd love some comments on this!
