Walking backwards might use some different muscles and perhaps be of some use as a warm up, but I figure it's gotta be a weird sensation, and not something you can do with a lot of intensity as far as a workout (rather than a warm-up) goes.

If you are looking for an alternative treadmill workout, try adding some incline. Each 1% of incline adds about 10% to the degree of challenge, and can be a good lower impact workout when compared with the impact of C25K.

Thanks for the advice! I did 4 videos today.. one of them was a cardio video, one was a yoga/pilates video, and the other two were blogilates videos and then I did c25k also. I'll have to spend some time looking around tonight though to find some more ideas.

Any good exercise program includes BOTH strength training and cardio. You are already ticking the cardio box with C25K, so the next thing to add is some ST, rather than more cardio.

You don't need any equipment for ST - you can get in a great workout using just your own bodyweight for resistance (eg. squats, planks, pushups). Doing them in a slow and controlled manner is more challenging, more effective and safer than doing them as fast as you can.

Yoga does include some elements of ST, although its focus is probably more flexibility than strength.

Apparently it's called 'retro walking'. I've read a lot about it and people have a lot of varying opinions on if it does anything or not. When doing it though, I personally can feel it working different muscles than forward walking. I do the walking and backward walking at full incline also. What would be examples of beginner strength training?

What is the purpose of backwards walking?

You want to add in full body strength training 1-3x/week.

I'm extremely new to working out but I've been doing C25K so I've been walking/running but I've added in walking/walking backwards. I'm trying to alternate days doing these two activities but I think I would benefit from additional exercises. I was thinking about doing yoga on the days that I do C25K and then some sort of workout video's (still looking into what looks like a good option) on the days that I do the walking/walking backwards. I'm doing everything at home for now with no equipment other than a treadmill.
