I have checked it manually in the past, a little bit of a nuisance, but not a terrible interruption to the workout. I used the six second count and multiplied by 10. You can get to the nearest five pretty easily that way and it only takes a few seconds.
On the other hand, I have an HRM now, and I love being able to glance at my wrist and see what my HR is.
Maybe look for a used one?
