There is disagreement among the experts when it comes to deciding how much exercise a person needs to be fit or lose weight. Because Americans have become extremely sedentary, many experts say that a person should be exercising 60-90 minutes a day. That's how inactive we've become.
Now, if you happen to have an active job where you might be walking up and down stairs all day or doing some other type of physical activity, you don't need as much exercise. Some people (like myself) routinely walk to work. That's part of my active lifestyle.
If you are very sedentary, it would be best to slowly ease into a regular routine so that your activity will become just that, a routine. Starting out with 15-20 minutes really is the best way to start an exercise program. Don't try to do too much too soon or you will end up frustrated, fatigued, burned or injured.
Also, what most people don't realize is that when it comes to weight loss or even weight gain, what matters most is what we eat. Good nutrition is what takes the weight off and keeps it off. Exercise is what keeps our bodies fit. In short, you can't outrun a bad diet with exercise. If you want to take the weight off, you have to eat right.
If you want to be fit, you exercise. What you do for exercise really does depend on your fitness goals. If you want to decrease your risk for cardiovascular disease, take a daily 30 minute walk. Every little bit really does add up.

More important than the duration is the intensity of the workout. High intensity interval training (HIIT) is as effective in burning fat, if not more (and according to some experts, it is more effective) than lower intensity longer duration workout.
HIIT is especially good for preserving muscle mass.
However, one caveat: HIIT is not for the faint of the heart. It tends to be short, but every minute can feel like an eternity due to high intensity.

Research supports that something like 12 minutes of high intensity interval anaerobic training three times a week might well be of higher benefit than 30 or more minutes of traditional aerobic exercise 5 or more times a week.
Of course, the usual provisos about getting a doctor's approval and the like are in play here. High intensity interval training isn't for everybody and imo should be researched at depth before engaging in it.

Yes, they do. A workout can be as short as 10 minutes as long as your heart rate gets up into the cardio zone. Many people find shorter workouts helpful as they may have 10-15 minutes free a couple/few times a day versus one 30 minute block.

I feel like I'm cheating when I only do 20 minutes or less of a workout. I see some videos on here for 10 or 15 minutes of cardio exercise or toning. Do people find it helpful to do brief workouts when crunched for time?
