I do my cardio early in the morning 5 days/week. I do strength training in the afternoon/evenings 2 to 3 days/week. I do prefer cardio to strength training so, I wait until later in the day to do my strength training.

Remember too, that it's quality of the workout that matters, not quantity. I borrowed a friends HRM once and it turns out that my speed workout (intervals for 20 minutes) burned just as many calories as my long run (6 miles in about an hour). The same holds true for ST. If you are lifting heavy for 30 minutes, you will be just as or more tired than if you had spent 60 minutes lifting at a lighter weight. If time of workout is important to you, check out things like HIIT (high intensity interval training) and the tabata protocol to get a lot of workout in a very short amount of time.

I guess I just need to make the time even if it means hitting the gym in the morning for cardio and then after work for strength training I don't have enough time in the morning to get in my cardio and strength training routine before work bc of the time my gym opens. I will figure it out and do what works with my schedule. making time for me is important and I get that its just finding the time to make the time on top of working full time and errands and everything else.
I strength train at the gym 4 days a week (different body parts each session) with free weights and cables, then do cardio immediately after. I try to keep the weight training to 30 minutes but sometimes it runs a little over on some days. I do about 60 minutes of cardio on those 4 days at about 75% of my MHR with some intervals thrown in. Two additional days I just go for an hour of easy cardio for recovery and to break a little sweat. I like to exercise.
I do my strength training first since I lift heavier weights and want to put my freshest energy into that portion of my workout. Also I have this weird fear that if I get fatigued from cardio, my form will suffer when I lift, so lifting for me comes first always.

"Toning" is marketing muscles to women who are afraid if they pick up a barbell, they'll leave the gym looking like She-Hulk. It doesn't happen, what does happen is you get results. Lifting Barbie weights does nothing but waste time.

If I have a big chunk of time (like today because I'm off), I'll do both ST and cardio because I can allot for a little bit of rest time between each session. Or if I'm doing a shorter combined, I'll do a circuit workout

I just started doing cardio and strength training in the same gym session about 2 months ago.
Frankly, I never thought I'd be able to do it. At home, I would get off my stationary bike after 30 minutes and feel DONE. Wiped out. But my personal trainer encouraged me to try it.
So now I do 35 minutes on the elliptical to warm up the whole body, and then I do 5 to 7 machines and 4 floor exercises (for abs). It takes me an hour and a quarter. I try to do this 3 times a week at least. Then twice a week I do 30 minutes of cardio on my bike at home with no strength training after.
I have not been at it long enough to tell if it's making a huge difference, but it certainly feels good.
According to Coach Nicole, you will burn more fat during your strength workout if you do cardio first. Health experts recommend a minimum of 20 minutes for the heart benefits of cardio. I try to get in 20 minutes of moderate jogging before Body Pump class and have no problem (energy wise) making it through the hour long class. You will sweat more since you will already be hot when you start the weight training. It does mean I need a block of time that is almost 1.5 hours at the gym also.

how many of you do cardio and strength training at the gym. I know im going to need to start adding strength training to my workouts because im only doing cardio right now. I do 30 - 45 mins of cardio at a time. my question is how many of you do cardio and then hit the weights after or how many of you do strength training on days you don't do cardio. I don't have time to spend 2 hours at the gym every night
