What do you need to do ? What you need to do will depend on your goals. What are YOUR fitness goals ? Once you know what you want, then you can start crafting an exercise routine.
For now, why don't you start by checking out the class schedule the gym offers ? The great thing about taking a class is that you have access to an instructor who will help teach you good form with the exercises as well as give you pointers. Many schools offer classes. So, why not try a class ? classes are fun and a great workout.
If you'd like to use the machines or free weights, but not sure what to do, you might consider investing in a couple of personal training sessions.
Also, if you have been sedentary for a long time, you want to take things slowly. don't try to do too much too soon or you will end up fatigued and frustrated. set reasonable goals to start. If you're not used to working out 5-6 days a week, don't start with that much. Instead start with maybe 2-3 workouts per week. Give your body time to adapt to that routine. Once you feel comfortable (and that could take 3-4 weeks) then you can consider adding an extra day.
The problem that I see (and I'm guilty of the behavior), is that people are very gung ho at New Years. They make resolutions that end up by the wayside in 4-6 weeks. Thus the reason to set simple, achievable goals. Because the exercise doesn't stop the minute we've lost the weight. If you want to be healthy for your entire life, then you need to be active in some way for your entire life.
That's why you need to start out slowly. consider taking a daily walk or walking more places when possible. check the class schedule and try 1 or 2 classes. consider having 1 or 2 sessions with a PT if you're not sure how to use any of the weight equipment.

I own a treadmill and it is my intention to use it two to three times a week. However, at my school (I'm a graduate student), there is an amazing gym with a fitness center and all of the bells and whistles.
When classes start again I have scheduled myself in two to three times at the gym alternated by days at home on the treadmill. The problem is... what do I do at the gym? How do I know like what I NEED to do? I'm not nervous about the equipment or anything... I'm just not sure how to figure out what my "routine" should be... any pointers?
