Walking is a great way to lose weight. I started walking some time ago which lead to running. I love to run!

3 miles is an amazing start. Keep up the good work!!!

You can accomplish anything you set your mind too. Put one foot in front of the other and go for it.

Walking is an excellent place to start. Any time you start a new activity, you will be a bit sore as your body adapts. The key is to find the sweet spot where your body is challenged but not overwhelmed. Lots of great suggestions for scaling back, but keep in mind that as that gets easier, you want to keep progressing by adding more time, more steps and more intensity. Good luck on your journey. Your dogs are counting on you.

How about taking two or three short (e.g., 10 minute) walks a day, instead of taking one really long walk? The dogs would probably like that too! It's a good way to "ease in" to exercising, imo.

Because of my work schedule, I found that I had to take shorter walks more frequently rather than one long walk after work. At least I felt like I was moving/burning calories, and it was a nice mental break.

Happy New Year and good luck!

Ok, that makes sense. I think a shorter walk for today will be in order. Truly, I purposely sought out and brought home dogs that need activity every day to motivate me- they love a walk- it will just be shorter today!
Thanks for the imput

The good thing is, the more you do it the easier it will be!
Maybe don't go 3 miles again so soon; start a little slower. But keep moving!!

Yep, vary your activity and include both cardio and strength. Also, make sure you are taking time to warm up, cool down, and stretch but do the stretching part at the END of your workout, be it strength or cardio. (Stretching cold muscles is comparable to trying to stretch a frozen rubber band. The results may not be pretty.)

Also, doing a light work out they day after a tough workout can help break up the lactic acid that's built up. It's part of the reason you're feeling sore. And breaking it up can make you feel better.

I am no expert by any means, but in my experience and in all I have read, it is best to rest to allow the muscles to recover. You can switch off between exercises. Walk one day, do strength training another, then back to walking. The worst thing you can do in my opinion is work out too hard, too fast, get sore and discouraged and quit. Small steps. Plenty of recovery. That would be my advice.

I would like to get into better shape- Well, I didn't realize just how "out of shape" I am, until I went for a 3 mile walk with the dogs yesterday. I am sore from my neck to my ankles-even my arms are sore.
So, what activity should I do today? Walk again, and how far? I have never been this sore from just walking before!
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated
Thanks
