DWEBB648,

Welcome to Spark People !

Don't try to do too much too soon or you will end up frustrated or fatigued. If you've been sedentary for a very long time, then you want to slowly ease into a routine so that your exercise will become just that, a routine.

I would recommend starting with a daily 30 minute walk. That may not seem like a lot, but you really should slowly ease into a routine. If you have a gym membership, I too recommend checking out the class schedule. Take 1-2 classes to start, not 3-5. Don't be afraid to try new things, but be patient ! Let's say you try Zumba for fun, but get frustrated because you can't seem the get the moves.

When you take a class, look to the left and look to the right. At one time, that person was brand new too. Before you take a class, let the instructor know that you are new. They'll show you move modifications when you need them. Bring water. Most people don't realize how quickly they can dehydrate.

Take baby steps literally and figuratively. Remember, you didn't gain the weight overnight, it's not coming off overnight.

Depending on the gym, they may offer group fitness classes, which can be a lot of fun! If you do go, maybe let the instructor know you are new and about any limitations you may have. That way, they can help you get set up and will help them know to queue alternate exercises or lower impact.

Sometimes, they are included with your membership, other times they charge a drop in rate. They usually offer a combination of strength and cardio set to music. I have met many people and made some great friends by going to classes.

Welcome to the site!

Your best bet is to find exercises you enjoy, because you're more likely to stick with it. As long as your workout is challenging for you, that's what matters most. In general, I'd recommend 20-30 minutes of cardio exercise 3-4 times per week, as well as strength training twice a week.

You might ask your gym if they offer a free equipment orientation for new members. Lots of times you can get set up on a basic program to get you started.

Hope that helps,

Coach Jen
