I'm 22 years old and I've had fibro for most of my life. I still grew up playing softball and ultimate frisbee and even became the frisbee captain of my high school team. For me it was all about listening to my body. I had days I couldn't go to practice because of a flare up. When I got into college it was the same. I discovered what worked for me was I began with just doing 20 minute walks around the neighborhood. I wanted to do more but that was all my body allowed. Gradually, and I do mean gradually, I built up more endurance to do more. Over time, my 20 minute walks turned into 1.5 hours walks and now I even add jogging. I did the same in the gym. I started slowly on the elliptical and gradually increased speed and intensity. I still have days where I hurt too badly to do a workout so on those days I just focus on my eating instead. Exercising with fibro is not impossible but it definitely takes some effort. Another thing that works for me is I take a bath either after each work out if I can or at the end of the day before I go to bed. That really helps for me.

I've had it for YEARS. Last fall I started working out at the gym taking classes. We were using 8# weights and I did OK at first, then my shoulders/neck hurt so bad I could hardly move. My doctor told me I did more harm than good and now I have to go to physical therapy because of it. But he told me just to walk. Walk the dog, walk around, and that's what I'm doing. That doesn't hurt my neck and shoulders!

I'm 18 and I was diagnosed with fibro 2 years ago...I also have 2 bulging disks and spinal stenosis. I don't know what to do I'm 5'9 and weigh 260 pounds I'm so depressed. I also don't enjoy vegetables. I would enjoy and and all support and advice

I've had fibro for most of my life and the exercise I found that was easiest on my body was just straight up walking. All I did was walk everyday and it definitely helped me lose weight. I've since moved on to jogging and spinning but I really feel that walking everyday helped give me a good foundation. My doctor told me that I literally had to walk everyday with no rest days whatsoever. It sounds really daunting at first but I grew to love it. Days that I didn't have my walk just didn't feel complete.

I also have fibro and I agree with everything RavelGirly said. The more you can move, the more in-control your pain will be. Do as much as you can, when you can.

I exercise about six days a week. I swim and I do low-impact dancing (Latin, with a partner). I also do a cardio/weight workout of my own design (15 minutes treadmill, 1 weight circuit alternating arms and legs, 15 minutes exercise bike, another weight circuit) and occasionally do Zumba.

Alternating high and low impact seems to help. I try not to do high-impact workouts back-to-back or to do too many long workouts.

Dances: salsa (standard/LA), casino, rueda de casino, cumbia Colombiana, bachata, mambo, cha-cha-chá, merengue, reggaetón.

Currently learning: Mexican cumbia, danzón, Cuban rumba

Dances to Learn in the future: flamenco, tango Argentino, samba, belly dancing, bhangra, ballroom rumba

I forgot to add that strength training is good too. I started doing Coach Nicole's videos here using 2 lb hand weights and resistance bands. Depending on your pain level, you might want to start with 1 lb weights or soup cans.

You CAN minimize your fibro symptoms with a gentle exercise program, good nutrition, and proper rest.

I have fibromyalgia. When I started exercising, I had so much pain that 15 minutes on my elliptical would put me in bed for a day. I had success starting with Leslie Sansone's videos - Walk Away The Pounds. I started with the 1 mile DVD, then the 2 mile DVD, I did them 3 days a week to start with. I worked my way up to 5 days a week. Now I usually can use my elliptical for 45 minutes or run five miles without causing a flare!

Find something gentle you can start with that doesn't cause massive flare ups. Gradually increase time and intensity as tolerated. Don't push too hard or try to increase your workout length as fast as someone without fibro can. Exercise really helps diminish the symptoms of fibro but it takes time to see this benefit. I think it took me two months of regular exercise before I realized I was having less pain.

Is anybody with fibro able to exercise without it causing a flare up? If so, what type of exercise to you do? How often? I already know that working out in water is a good option.
