One of the fringe benefits of eating healthier is that it also often leads to a lower sodium (salt) intake, and less retained water.

And less retained water can lead to big drops in the scale.

But this is largely a one-off effect (not that this is a bad thing - less sodium is healthy in its own right), but I wouldn't read too much into a single large drop in the scale.

What you are doing sounds about right, and shouldn't be cause for having to re-adjust your calories at this stage.

Way to go! It could be a combination of water retention and real weight loss. Were your last few weeks disappointing or gainers? Sometimes the body let's go of weight in clumps rather than steadily. See what happens next week before making any major adjustments.

THIRTEENSTEPS,

Depending on your height, if you're morbidly obese, it's not unusual to see a big drop in the first week. However, you should know that a drop that dramatic probably water weight.

Ever notice your weight goes up during TOM ? Most women tend to "gain" weight during their menstrual cycle. Is that a fat gain ? Nope. it's nothing more than a temporary water weight gain that passes in a few days. I can easily gain or lose as much as 3-4 pounds in a day because of a shift in my water weight.

Can a person lose 13 pounds in a week ? Sure, we've seen it on the Biggest Loser all the time. BUT, those are very morbidly obese people who were exercising 4-6 hours a day. In order to truly lose 13 pounds of fat would have required a deficit of 40,000+ calories.

One pound of fat = 3,500 calories. In theory, in order to lose one pound of fat, it is suggested that a person eat 500 calories less for the day. If they do this for seven days, that gives them a total weekly loss of one pound of 3,500 calories.

While a safe weekly weight loss would be 1-2 pounds per week, there will be weeks you don't lose. there will even be weeks you gain ! And that doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong. You're going to see many ups and downs on the scale as you lose. And that too is perfectly normal. So, don't beat yourself up if you happen to see a gain in your weight next week. It's not unusual to see a big loss one week and then absolutely nothing or even a gain for the next few.

I'm thinking that if I do lose any more than 5 pounds by next week's weigh in I will increase my calories 100-200 calories and see how that goes. If I continue to lose with the increase, I will stick with that level for a bit.

first of all "WAY TO GO" 7 lbs does seem like a lot so I would not be surprised if next week you don't lose any and just stay the same why your body catches up. but like I said before WAY TO GO!!!

Today is a "weigh day" and I lost 7 pounds this week. I'm not sure if it's because I am moving more (aiming for 10,000 steps per day or more) or maybe I set my calories too low (1,300-1,500 calories daily) or possibly all the Thanksgiving salt/bloat has made it's way out.
