Wal-Mart sells sweats for around $5. Sometimes you have to start on your own and maybe others will join you. Who knows, you may make a friend and find a new work out partner when you start to go.

My apologies if anything I said could be taken as cutting you down. It was the paper-thin excuses that needed to be cut down, not you.

While your mind might have blown the fears of Curves out of proportion, going along for the first time DID take courage, and that should be applauded. Keep up the great work!

I am glad you went! And who cares what others may think. If anything, they are just as worried/self-conscious as you. In reality, people in the gym really aren't there to judge. They are there to do what you're doing: exercise! emoticon

Well I decided to start curves today. I found something to wear and I went without a partner. It wasn't so bad. I actually enjoyed it and look forward to going again tomorrow. As most of you know it's hard to start something (like the gym) when you have been out of routine for so long. I just needed that extra push. I have been working out at home on my treadmill and gazelle, I've also be doing the 24day challenge (I'm on day 22) but going out and working out in front of people was a different story for me. I had to motivate myself to do it. I am at the heaviest I have ever been and do not feel comfortable in my own skin so this was hard for me to put myself out there and just DO IT! I did it and I feel great. I was actually the youngest person there and all the ladies were super nice and supporting. Thanks for the replies even those who kinda cut me down.

Layla, Yay, I'm glad you found a partner.
As for pajama pants - those are fine...extra comfortable, right?
Congrats on your progress so far you are clearly doing many things right.
I hope you enjoy your session at Curves!

LAYLASMOMMY9911,

I agree. You can find workout clothes like sweats for cheap at your local Goodwill or Salvation Army. Just wear something comfortable. You don't need anything fancy. Although, I do know some women who do dress to workout. You probably could wear pajama bottoms and t shirt and no one would care.

Curves is a good place to start a regular exericise routine. Who knows, once you get into a groove, you might enjoy yourself. And that's the point. a person should enjoy what they are doing. Because if you enjoy exercise, you'll look forward to doing it each and every day. Exercise should be fun !

ok so you don't have shorts. You don't have pants of ANY sort?? hell I have seen people in jeans at the gym. You can't spend $2 at goodwill for some? You can even get workout pants at the dollar store.

Not having anything to wear is really the silliest excuse I have ever heard. And I am a trainer, I have heard EVERY excuse known to mankind.

emoticon on your progress so far!

Curves shouldn't be very intimidating. That's one of their selling points.

if you have any pj bottoms that don't really look like pjs (solid color or grey/black with stripes), wear them. I've seen people in the gym in jeans. There are some gals at the Y who work out in long skirts (religious reasons).

everybody is there for the same reason. You'll do fine!

No I don't have shorts, I haven't wore shorts in about 10+ yrs. I have pajama pants. Oh and I did find a partner. Remember I just started this journey so it's these few little things that were holding me back. I have been working out at home and watching what I eat. I quit drinking pop and I have lost 9lbs since the 5th, So I must be doing something right.

Quote: "everyone ... makes up some reason why they can't go".

Well it sounds like you are doing exactly that with "workout partners" and clothing.

When I am feeling self-conscious about exercising, one of the things I keep repeating to myself "Yes, but at least I am doing something about it".

Honestly, what is the worst that could happen if you actually went along to Curves?

Take the first step!!!

Sorry but yes, that is a horrible excuse!

Perhaps you could go there (in a t-shirt and shorts or sweatpants) and tell them you have never been there before and could someone help you a bit.
If you are uncomfortable with that perhaps you could call there first and explain that you are nervous because you have not been there before.
In all probability they will give you the name of someone to ask for who will be MORE than happy to help you get started!

You should do this...you will be so proud of yourself!!!!

A co-worker of mine gave me a free 30 day pass to curves and I'm having trouble motivating myself to go. I have NO clothes to wear to workout in ( I know that sound like a horrible excuse) and I have another free pass and can't seem to get a workout partner, Everyone is too busy or makes up some reason why they can't go. I keep saying I'm gonna start tomorrow then tomorrow comes and I don't do it.
