In terms of motivation - I would encourage you to PRAISE and REWARD yourself, every time you exercise and every time you reach a healthy behavior goal. For example, I count how many days in a row I do my Sparkpeople tracking, and then give myself little treats like a new 99-cent song on Amazon, a new flavor of tea bags, or get a fun book from the library.

I also have a few people who understand my journey, that I can check-in with and get an "attagirl" or "yay for you!" for doing my behavior goals.

I am finding as I progress on my journey, that I crave praise and rewards but have often deprived myself of them until I get to some unattainable state of perfection - the guilt and shame from not reaching that perfection, becomes a block to healthy choices and a trap for me.

You did 8 minutes? YAY FOR YOU!

You'll be surprised how much you will improve if you add a few minutes a day to your elliptical routine..Good luck!

echoing the do 8 mins for a few days and add minutes in slowly. If you push too hard too fast....you could get an injury. Exercise is like drops in a bucket. Consistency is important and it will add up as your body gets stronger!!! Keep at it.

You have to keep going. You know that you will not change unless you change. Eight minutes is a good start. Next week try to make it ten minutes.

Baby steps.

One stumble does not a failure make.

Everything in moderation.

Don't try and overload yourself too soon! 8 minutes up from nothing is a GREAT accomplishment! :)

I have slightly different advice. Do your 8 minutes on the elliptical each day for a week. Next week add one or two more minutes. This will help you gradually work up to the amount you want to do each day or 5 days a week, however you are doing it.

The marching or walking in place during each commercial is an excellent idea. I've found that helps get me moving and is becoming a habit I don't even think about.

You will be amazed at how far you have come after just a couple of weeks. Wishing you much success.

110-you've taken that first step...CONGRATULATIONS!!

You have to start out where you are and take small steps to get where you want to be. It wouldn't be possible (or wise) to try to go from sedentary to an hour on the elliptical in one day. Small changes will add up to big results, if you keep it up and let them become part of your lifestyle.

In addition to your time on the elliptical, how about marching in place in front of the TV during commercials? Do one of the short videos here on Spark, or do a lap or two around your house or up and down your stairs. Anything you can do to add movement to your day will help build endurance and get you ready for more strenuous exercise in the future.

The most important thing about exercise is not what you do, just that you do it regularly.

As long as you continue to exercise regularly, you will find your fitness increasing quite quickly.

If you lasted 8 minutes this time, challenge yourself to do 9 minutes next time, 10 minutes the time after, etc. In just 2-3 weeks, you should be up to 20-30 minutes.

Keep up the great work.

8 minutes was more than you did before, right? 8 minutes will turn into 10 minutes, then 12, then 15...Keep at it and you will feel your body getting stronger...what a great feeling!!!!

motivation = why you want to get healthier/lose weight.

motivation is NOT = the desire to exercise.

So if your goals are meaningful to you..then the desire to exercise and improve should always be there.

So I just tried to work out on my elliptical today and all I could muster up was 8 minutes =\ I have a very sedentary lifestyle and am afraid that I can't do more than that in one sitting. How can I keep the motivation
