thanks everyone! I will definitely take it easier from now on! I guess I figured with walking my dog around the block every night, yoga, and my job which has me on my feet and walking all day that my legs could handle more! I appreciate all the responses and will definitely keep the advice in mind. :)

The first time I had worked out with a personal trainer, my legs and butt were so sore I couldn't do normal activities for 4-5 days. Once your body gets over the intial shock, the soreness isn't nearly as severe. So take it easy and you'll be able to resume your plan shortly.

IMO, if your legs are so sore that normal motions (sitting, going up or down stairs) are painful, I would stick to just slow mild walking until the pain subsides. Some very mild stretching might help as well. Sitting or laying motionless for long periods might feel good, but movement will help the healing process.

You seriously overdid it this time, but don't let that stop you from continuing to exercise. You need to increase the duration and intensity of exercise a little at a time--this gives your muscles, tendons and ligaments time to adapt to the new demands you're placing on them. One good way to do this would be to vary your evening dog walk---find some hills to challenge yourself, or increase your speed for short intervals several times along your route. Throw in a few body-weight strength exercises a couple of times a week, and you'll build a good foundation for tougher workouts later.

Kudos for starting an exercise routine....once you get familiar with your body and how it responds, you'll know where your limits are. Just remember that anything NEW should be eased into. I learned this the hard way when I recently re-started taking a yoga class. The first two sessions left me wobbly and weak afterward (in a good way), and I was all-over sore for a day or two. I had forgotten what a great workout it can be, but my body sure reminded me!

I agree that continuing to exercise is a wiser choice than stopping BUT it sounds like you went overboard. You will feel better if you ease into it.
Perhaps check out the workout generator on this site to help you and take it slow because a workout that makes you want to stop working out is not helpful, right??!!

Soreness is a common response when you do something your muscles are unfamiliar with.

I'd actually advocate continuing to work out, rather than stopping workouts, for a couple of reasons:
1. Increased blood flow to the muscles actually helps the recovery process.
2. Continuing to work out regularly will help your muscles get used to the new demands you are making of them, and will help you feel less sore in the future.

So keep working out, but definitely back off the intensity for a week or two.

I decided to finally start exercising to go along with my new eating habits and nightly dog walk. I played a game on the xbox called fitness evolution and 3 days later my legs are sooo sore I cant sit...I have to flop down! My question is, is there a way to prevent this or a way to feel better? I was hoping to take a day off from exercise every other day but I had to skip my workout today! (I was on the easiest ones there were btw!) Any advice would be appreciated, I'm still very much new to the fitness world! Thanks! :)
