Sounds like you have a good plan going for you! But definitely add upper body. I was amazed at how it helped when I added it in in addition to my running.

Best of luck with your program!!

It's always good to do total body: make sure you're getting some upper body strength and core, since those are also assets to runners.

Congrats on your future 5k awesomeness! Running is not easy, no matter how far you run! :)

GMINYARD,

Yes, that sounds pretty consistent with key exercise principles.

I do C25ks three days per week and elliptical or bike the other three days. I wanted to incorporate some strength training for my lower body to help with speed and stamina when I am jogging. I do rest from everything on Sunday. It sounds like this is okay since I am not using the muscles in the same way. Right?

For rest days: do you rest cardio and strength on the same day?

Agree with motivated@last.

Check out SP's workout generator. There's a great workout called ST for Runners or something like that. It's a 20 minute total body ST program.

Cardio and ST work the muscles in different ways, so you can do it either way while still allowing the muscles to recover.

Also, given that each of C25K and ST is recommended for just 3 times per week, you should still be able to have a complete rest day once per week.

I am doing the C25K program three days per week. Should I also do lower body weight training on opposite days, or give my legs a day to rest?
