Staying in shape has nothing to do with the gym. Many years ago there were very few gyms. You can do all kinds of non-gym exercise at home. The best programs are in ones you design for you without waiting in line, dealing with other peoples organisms, without a lot of expense and with your own knowledge of what you really need! The main requirement is motivation and that is not something you can get at the gym.

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.

You don't need a gym at all to stay fit. I love workout DVDs. I am in love with Turbo Fire which is fun, motivating and will make you sweat. I also sign up for 5k races every few months and sometimes run in the neighborghoohd to prepare for them.
I also like Zumba wii game.

I do various exercises that just use your body weight at home in the morning, and behind my desk in my office for a break while at work.

The various Wii exercise games provide something for me to do at home. I do not have much room for all of them, but they can be fun.

I have put various exercise equipment on my Christmas list, and have informed my family (well I told them I have a board on pinterest for just gift ideas, and it has a lot of exercise things). All the things I want are not huge things like a treadmill or any of those machines. Stability balls, medicine balls, weights (I posted variable weights), resistance bands, ab wheel, jump rope, and more area all things that can easily be stored and used around the apartment.

My mom used to have a treadmill but she never used it and sold it. She instead went to walking around the house. The downstairs of the house made a circle and thus she never had to turn around. She would go from the living room, to the front entryway, to the dining room to the kitchen, to the breakfast room to the living room and keep going. She would put on music and she would only do it for a few minutes. When I used to live at home, I would walk around this same circle when I was on a phone call. To this day, if I am on a call at home, I am typically up and walking around the apartment, unless I am having to look something up on computer while on the phone.

I used Leslie Sansone a LOT last winter. I like that in the time it could take be to get to a gym and in; I've already done 1 1/2 miles. And I could break the workout up as needed. No "I only have an hour it's not worth it to go". I would bet a nice elliptical if I had the money. I have some handweights and other DVD's for variety. I love to go to the gym but can't afford it right now. But if it isn't keeping you movtivated switch stuff up.

Yoga/pilates mat, 2 pound weights, 4 pound weights; dvds, downloads, actual recording devices; resistance tubing

Will get actual resistance band ...
but until then, repurposing yoga straps and towels for resistance ...

you could take a walk for cardio and get a few different size weights, 2 lb, light, 6 for medium, and 8 for heavy. Do weight training 3 days a week. also you could get on internet and get on youtube and watch some of the exercise videos they have. they have exercise videos for cardio, weight training, yoga and pilates. you could save alot of money.

I have the new Wii Fit U - with the activity tracker. So it takes note of anything I do when away from the game (like walking the girl to school, going up and down the stairs) as well as the stuff I do in the game (like dancing, running, boxing, etc). I love it.

I'll never stop being FLABulous!
I just need to be a little more healthful and develop some muscle and endurance. :)

DVDs. I have P90X, Turbo Fire, Turbo Jam, Slim Series, free weights, bands... And this works for me. I can exercise anytime day or night and not leave my house! I've used Beachbody products since they were on VHS!

Fitness blender on youtube has a bunch of great free videos, plenty of options to change it up often. Walk whenever you can, put on some music when doing chores and dance while you work. That's what I do :]

The best thing we ever did was take the gym (YMCA) membership money and use it to buy a good quality elliptical trainer. We're had it for 13 years and it has held up very well. Our exercise philosophy is to remove obstacles, and when the equipment is in the basement the excuses run out.

Over time, we also purchased a stationary bike, a recumbent bike, a treadmill, and a weight system (mostly pre-owned). I don't use the equipment as much or as often as I should, but the convenience is a tremendous boost when I'm wavering.

Removing obstacles also includes minor things, like making sure to have enough clean socks and workout shorts and t-shirts -- sometimes it's a pebble that causes a stumble.

I have some serious health problems, and I can't walk a lot anymore with out my feet breaking or being in extreme pain, I just recently moved into a house, and I love it because it has this really long hallway, and I just walk that hallway several times a day, it might take me a bit to get it done but it is one way to get exercise without going to a gym, I also used to walk, a lot, for at least 2 hours every second day.
And I also don't have a car so I walk to places as much as I can, it is the best thing I have done for my self..
Good luck, I hope you find some thing that you like to do to replace the gym..

There is so much material out there that's free!

On youtube: Be Fit channel has lots of workouts including a few 90 day programs, Tae bo by Billy Blanks, Jillian Michaels, Zuzana (formerly of Bodyrock tv the home workout movement)

Websites: Bodyrock.tv, zuzkalight.com.

Programs: There are also many programs that have been put together that you can by and follow for example quite a few by Beachbody p90x programs, insanity etc.

I have a gym membership right now. I do ride my bike a few times a week, in the afternoons. I also do my strength training at home. I have some dumbbells and also do bodyweight (pushups, planks). I can walk, run (or do walk/run intervals) without going to the gym. When my membership at the gym expires, I'll probably start saving up to get a Concept2 rowing machine to have at home. I also want to get heavier dumbbells.

I use the gym for the treadmill, elliptical, and rowing machine. At one time, I did use the gym for the weights.

Simply answer, invest in the book "You Are Your Own Gym" by Mark Lauren and structure a workout from his suggestions. As an alternative look up Progressive Calisthenics at pccblog.dragondoor.com/ what these individual can do using only bodyweight training is phenomenal.


It is called WORK-ing out for a reason.

I said getting fit was simple, I did not say it was easy.

Cardio burns calories, strength work burns fat.

Eat well to lose weight, exercise to get fit

You can not build a six pack using twelve packs


Often when we seek a magic bullet for fitness we end up shooting ourselves in the foot.

I workout at home and recently decided to create a home circuit using a variety of resources, natural like a steep hill, steps, ramp, nature walks (working outdoors and gardening could be included), but I'm also using a variety of Dvd's, weights, bands, elliptical, yoga mat, and a variety of free fitness videos online. It's nice to have a variety in or outside now that the weather is so nice. Very flexible, variety, and fresh ideas.

Even if you don't purchase anything, there are so many resources to work out at home. Just move!

I run with a running group or a friend, sometimes solo even. I also rely on workout videos from home. I've used Jillian Michaels' 30 Day Shred (you can find it on youtube), the videos from SparkPeople (including the 28 Day Boot Camp DVD), and TurboFire (which is a fitness program on DVD).

I do belong to a gym, but it's Planet Fitness and costs $10 a month. For the $140 or so a year (with the annual service charge) I feel like I get my money's worth. With that said, I'm not there very often. I keep in shape (or work toward getting in shape in my case!) by running outside and practicing yoga. Running only costs the price of a pair of good shoes and yoga is awesome for strength training!

Like many others, I do home workouts. I follow Leslie Sansone, and Chris Freytag's workouts on YouTube and DVD. I also have some of the FIRM DVDs. I use hand weights and resistance bands.

I do lots of walking, riding and gardening; not enough strength training (beyond carrying sacks of feed around the place), but I'm still fitter than I've been in years. But I echo NANLEYKW in saying it is eating too much that will make you put the weight back on, not a decreased level of exercise.

I also walk to Leslie Sansone's DVDs. I do enjoy the 5 Mega Miles because I can get my workout in on session (handy for days when I don't have the time to split up my workouts). Thanks for sharing I don't feel alone now. I was feeling as if I was the only one not going to a gym.

I started a home day care about 10 weeks ago and one of the best benefits is being able to work out in the middle of my work day. Several times actually!

I have two one year olds and 2 3 year olds in my care. The 3 year olds work out with me.

We do push ups, sit ups, toe touches, leg lifts, and squats every day, Mon-Fri after breakfast.
After afternoon nap, we take a "walk" with a double stroller to push babies. I'm just getting back into running, so I jog/walk and the three year olds can easily keep up with me.

$40 a month for a gym membership = $480. I took the money and bought an elliptical for my house. I don't have to fight anyone to get on the machine, don't have to wait in line and can walk downstairs and hop on. I have a stationary bike as well and use that every other day. I alternate between the elliptical and bike.

I try and walk almost every day, while my kids are at their activities (4 MPH). I also printed some of the spark exercises for rainy or cold days (don't forget there are videos too!). Wii Fit is another great and easy tool and I've used it successfully. I always take the stairs instead of the elevator and park as far away as I can when out and about.

I do Zumba or Walk Away the Pounds every day. Also, I do practical things like taking stairs instead of elevators, parking further away from the entrance of a building, and I move whenever and wherever I can.

I also wanted to point out, though, that it's your diet that will cause you to keep your weight off or gain it back much more so than whether or not you go to the gym.

I don't belong to a gym, because for me, the added effort of getting myself there makes it that much less likely that I'll go. For cardio, I run four days a week, and for strength training, I do a combination of dumbbell and bodyweight exercises at home.

I have actually gone to the internet to find different workouts that I can do at home without all of the special equipment. My workouts range anywhere between 10 minutes to 60 minutes and I can up the reps. I have designed a workout schedule for 6 months. I have enough workouts to keep it from becoming repetitive. I do Core, then Legs, Arms, and then I have an all body workout. Then I also have challenges such as Tabita and HIIT workouts so I can really push myself. I also toss Cardio into the mix by walking on my treadmill every night (even my rest nights). The only thing that you might need is various size weights, an exercise ball, maybe a kettle ball and a mat.

I have a really good treadmill that feels like commercial, a bunch of kettlebells (18-35 lbs), a pull up bar, a single 30 lb dumbbell and a TRX. It gives me a maintenance level of fitness, I didn't have a gym membership for about 18 months when my son was born and I used only the equipment listed above (minus the TM, we didn't get that until recently). I lost a LOT of strength simply because I didn't have heavy stuff to throw around.

I dislike doing weights at home because I get easily distracted. At the gym I have nothing to do but work out, and I do not have the space/money to buy weights/equipment that would actually challenge me.

Sounds like the gym isn't giving you too much support. You can find weights and a treadmill pretty cheap on craigslist or something. If you have the room, you can purchase that. I've found having those things in the house is more motivating than having a gym membership, because 1) it's always available 2) I paid for it so I feel bad looking at it not being used. I've always thought the buddy system works well. Right now, I don't have time to workout with a friend, but we have a standing $1 weekly bet to see who gets the most minutes of exercise in. Couple things to try :)

Hi! I am looking for advice and ideas on how to stay in shape year round without going to a gym. What activities do you do and how do you stay motivated?

I am thinking about cancelling my gym membership after three years because it is expensive have only been using cardio machines and weights. It is getting boring and often do videos at home because the gym classes are not at convenient times. However, I am worries if I do quit the gym all together that I might gain all my weight back. What do you think???
