I am with the last poster - long bike rides, long walks, and cross country skiing in the winter, all good exercises.

I like to go on long walks or bike rides. I also ride horses.

I am also in love with the you tuber "Blogilatis". This is a young woman who provides 10-15 minutes Pilates routines targeted for high school and college girls. I have put on so much muscle since I've started doing her routines.

Although I'm good at wearing my sparktracker on my work shoes. During the weekend, doing chores in the house I like to go barefooted. In the yard my mud sling shoes I usually do not put the tracker on to keep it looking nice. There is always something to do shake the body from getting rusty.

Hi, just saw your message and love that you do Leslie also but just wondered cuz I just
bought the spark tracker and found that it is very inaccurate for doing Leslie's at home
workout and wondered how you use the tracker?

I have a variety of DVDs that I do: Taebo, Turbo Jam and Turbo Fire, Walking with Leslie Sansone, Jane Fonda Step Aerobics & Abs workout, weight lifting (either free weights or on the machine), and walking a minimum of 12 miles outdoors (I usually do around 15). To top it all, I do Tai Chi twice a week for two hours each time.

I walk 45 minutes a day along the river, and do a workout 3 days a well with resistance bands, and 20 lb. dumbells. I do my calf raises on the steps of my apt building, and if the temp gets to low, or snow too high, I just run up and down the 3 flights of stairs in the building.

This is much easier in the summer, when you can play sports, ride a bike, or swim in the pool, nut it is much more fun to get exercise by playing around, than doing cardio on a machine.

I would also try joining a church league or YMCA league, which they may allow you to do for a small fee. I paid $49 for a 16 week basketball league at our local YMCA. Full membership was over $400, just like a gym, so I couldn't afford it. A church league will probably be similar ( $50 ). Usually you are paying for a shirt, and the facility you are playing in. You can even do this with a few friends, if they are of similar fitness levels. We have a local basketball place ( indoors ), where you can rent a court for $20 and hour. If you bring 6 people, this is very cheap. If you are real lucky, your town may have a community club. Lots of sports that you can play indoors in the winter.. volleyball, basketball, swimming, or tennis.

I made a Disco channel on Pandora and dance to it at least 30 minutes a day plus when I making dinner. I also use free weights 3 times a week. The scale hasn't been moving but I'm noticing a change in my shape and sleeping.

I am also 73. I have recently been walking near my home, there is a nice smooth path alongside a canal and I am able to do an hour walk. I have some arthritis but fortunately do not yet need any kind of walker. I notice that my legs are in good shape but my upper body is kind of saggy! Guess I need to add in some muscle toning for that part of me. Hang in there! Getting older is not for sissies.

I watch the news while using my gazelle and I have hand weights that I use for about 15 minutes a day. I am going to start using the resistance band soon. I have also started to walk to destinations at work instead of driving my towmotor there.

I started a month ago , but I didn't go nowhere.
Why? I am finding everything I do tiresome and very difficult. I am trying to continue and get somewhere with my fight for a better life. My health has been going down in the last 5 years. I am 73 and recently I am experiencing quite a bit of pain with this injury of a sciatic nerve. Of course that has nothing to do with my continued to eat things are not beneficial for me. I believe depression is the cause of wanting more sweets, is my weakne

to stay in shape i have for over 40 years :
given up the elevator is at all possible and use the stairs
park as far from entrance as i can and walk, altho now that i am older i park closer in the winter to avoid a fall
never order a full meal - one appetizer - and share a dessert if at all
never have bread put on the table so no nibble before order is served
walk as briskly as possible not sauntering
do not wear elastic waists at all
do not drink alcohol - never have
no leftover meals if at all possible to tempt in later hours
run up and down my stairs at home as many times as i can
lift large cans like wts for resistance
BUT WHY I LIKE A GYM experience is the sharing of ideas with people of like attitudes, the classes were great and fun, i feel exercising solo is quite boring even with good music and looking out into nature.

not "in shape" by any means but working on it! DVD work out, walking, chair exercises when I am at the puter (which is too much by the way :) ) I had a gym membership for a while, hardly ever went. I do better when I have things to do here.

What would you attempt, if you knew you could not fail?

Full body dumbbell workouts in basement; push-ups, various crunches, stability ball, squats--and the toughest--for me anyway--lunges. Use proper form, weight and number otherwise injury is probable. Incorporation of exercise bands is very useful too; especially the light ones in warm ups and cool downs. Don't forget to stretch after cool down.

I almost exclusively do bodyweight strength training.

I used to be a national-level runner... I trained up to 100 miles a week; I was on a constant diet and felt hungry all the time.

Since switching to strength training primarily, I pretty much eat what I want (I follow leangains though), I don't count calories and never go hungry. I am a little heavier than I used to be (due to the extra muscle), but my body fat percentage is as low as ever!

I used to think I had a slow metabolism, and that I'd be struggling with keeping the weight off all my life. I now know I was just doing the wrong things.

I can't say that I am in shape yet, but I am getting there. Everyday is a step in the right directions.

Here are some of the things I do away from the gym.
While watching TV - Situps, squats, lunges.. Ect (not every night I am watching TV, just the days I am extremely Motivated)
House cleaning - It takes longer to get the house clean but I "dance" while cleaning. Squat while putting away laundry
and the most sane thing? Workout videos, if you can't afford to buy them most local library's have them to rent. or You tube.

I also find if I read fitness magazines they help keep me motivated and they usually have a small work out routine in them to follow as well.

I have a gym membership and I also work out with a trainer once a week at the gym. 80% of what I do with the trainer does not require the gym. It is expensive and I have been doing it for a year and a half but I love it too much to give it up. My point is that most of it can be done at home with body weight and basic equipment like a bosu ball, stability ball, step, and weights. I have recently increased my strength training and decreased my cardio (only so many hours available) and I had a big drop in body fat percentage. In 90 days I went from 22.5% to 17.3%. I only lost 9 pounds overall. I eat very clean.

I did the gym for a year. I used it to get me running through the winter, did yoga, spin classes, etc. But I got tired of packing a bag & going out to exercise. I started running outside and am keeping that up instead. I also horse-back ride.

Oh I think its easier than ever to not have a Gym Membership if you have access to the internet. I wouldn't waste my time at the gym because I have walking trails near my house, I can walk to the park, hike up the mountain, walk the trails and use the equipment there if I want. When the weather isn't cooperating (or even when it is) I have a treadmill, exercise bike, elliptical, stairs, do strength training, dancing, Zumba, Yoga, Hike, Use the Fitness Blender website, Spark People videos, Boot camp videos, Aerobics.

It is so easy its not even worth a gym membership for me~

Been there, done that - meaning doing the gym membership. But even the gym can get old after a while. Even did Boot Camp but took me over the top and we all know what goes up must come down and usually falls back to ground...which I did. Meaning regained all lost - Ouch!

My best and consistent way is WALKING! You can do it anywhere, it's FREE and usually you have to walk somewhere during the day...even if it's just up and down and all around your house. You can even do it inside when it's cold outside like a shopping mall. Another good benefit is you don't have to go anywhere...I've actually been getting in 30+ minutes just by walking my dog. emoticon emoticon emoticon

Here are some thoughts: 1. walk in place while watching tv. 2. if you buy milk in jugs - once all milk is gone, wash the container out and fill with either water or sand and use as weights. 3. do push-ups using your walls (or if you're able do the floor kind). 4. stairs at work? use them instead of elevator. 5. find the exercise channel on your tv and workout with it.i've found there are some programs on my DVR. Many are quick - about 10 minutes. Good Luck!! emoticon

I'm a city girl, I get around a lot on foot so I don't even think of my walking as transport as exercise until I'm hanging out with someone who drives everywhere. I also do most of my own housework and since becoming an aunt I've become a fairly regular weight lifter as well. That said I also do the video game fitness thing and it seems to work.

I can't afford the gym. I like the group classes but it's all way too expensive for me.

I'd replied similarly on another thread ... and maybe it does not even apply to some younger people, I'd wanted to love the gym,, but it had not worked out for me... in addition to its being beyond my time/cost/logistics budget ...

At my age, despite seeing those kids -- so full of energy at the end of a workday [but they'd made me TIRED looking at them, NOT very motivated, THAT! Still needed to knock down some STRONG tea or TabⓇ Energy ...DESPITE nowhere near low-carbing back then] - and the few people MY age, with prolific use of personal trainers to shield them/get them motivated (NO personal trainers/personal yoga masters unless I was conned into getting one...ONCE and NEVER AGAIN!] .. so perhaps for different reasons -- the only benefit was that it kinda did the job when my commute had been shorter and my medical problems/expenses had not gotten in the way ... the gym had been a happy(-ish) time, but it's gone ...

I have never belonged to a regular gym. For a while I went to a cardio dance studio. You could pay as you go or for less money you could buy a package of 10 classes and come whenever you want, no monthly fee. They had Zumba, yoga, pilates, cardio kickboxing, all kinds of things. I usually went once a week. I also did additional exercise at home like walking, SP videos, light weights.

Which TINA are you addressing ... there's two of us on this thread .. the one with the soup cans and assorted weight-training workarounds, and then there's me ..?

I have to keep from wasting ... which I do, most of the time ...

and my "secret" ... if you want to know ... is low-carbing mixed with sports nutrition ...

Oh, and because of the low-carbing?

Energy drinks on my commute home, but they have to be in extreme moderation ...

I walk 4-6 miles around my neighborhood. I jog on the treadmill, I used a program called couch to 5k to help me reach my full potential at running (I can't run on streets, and not sure I ever will. I tore my planter tendon a while ago and my knee hurts to bad with the high impact of the concrete/pavement.) I also use free youtube video's by the name of fitness bender to strength train twice a week. I would love a gym membership but its just not in my families budget plus we only have one car so no way to get there and a little one at home makes it almost impossible. I just find what works for me and work out the best way I can.

Although I do use a gym (for the pool & machine weights) I also use the treadmill at my house, the Wii Fit Plus, Spark videos online, go for long fast walks by myself, take the dog for walks, ride a bicycle and use 5# dumbbells.

LAURIEANDBLUE2K: A few years ago I had a one-week free pass to a Balley Fitness location. The first thing I saw when I walked into the ladies dressing room was a teased-up blond touching up her mascara before heading off to whatever "fitness" activity she intended to grace that day. It put me off Bally's henceforth and forever more. Probably unfair to Bally Fitness but there it is.

Debigene: Hey, you must be doing SOMETHING right to have lost 95 pounds. That's an accomplishment anyone should be proud of.

You're already walking 15 minutes a day. How about adding just 5 minutes a day to that every day? Five minutes isn't much by itself but over the course of a month that's (wait a minute, let me get my calculator) 17.5 hours of extra walking.

DVDs at home. You can try some non-conventional workouts that are more dance or sport oriented, that may keep you interested.

There is an old adage: a body in motion, stays in motion ...

I try to keep active all day long, and I'm a reader and quilter! Those really require a lot of sitting. But it can be done. When I've a load of laundry folded, I divide it into three parts or so, and walk back and forth putting it away instead of doing it all in one trip.

I have a glass of water in almost every room. I bought a tracker to wear that counts calories I've expended each day... this is a BIGGIE for me. I don't want to exceed the calories out by taking in more than that number.

I really care about being healthy for the rest of my life; about making that life strong and balanced. It takes spiritual endeavors, physical effort, and .... really, laughter!

You CAN change your life. Do you really want to?

Indeed these are the mere edges of His ways, and how small a whisper we hear of Him! But the thunder of His power who can understand? Job 26: 14

I thank you, Sparks, too.

The commercialized fitness world (and this includes the gym as well as personal trainers/yoga masters/dance masters/sensei (plural?), both out-call and at-gym) is so fraught, and booby-trapped and ego-driven ...

Not 100% sure if that includes mass media (books, video, downloads, CDs, etc.) ... because there is that magic word: IMPROVISATION ... Learned how to do that in the age of working out to aerobics audiotapes (while those who were in classes at the gym, were at the gym) -- although in that era, I'd been sticking my pinkie toe in and no more ...

Yeah, even Denise Austin ...Dear Denise, sorry I challenged your ego, but when I worked out to your voice, I did what I had to do ...

I just haven't been able to change my mindset in these last 4 years to get into exercise. I know it's important but my mind hasn't gotten there yet like it did with the healthy eating aspect of living healthy. I do and can move with greater ease with 95 pounds gone so I just do more of everything else. I am still a big fan of TV so EVERY commercial I get up and do something, I walk 15 minutes each day and climb up and down 4 flights of stairs in the parking garage 5 days a week. I know it is still not enough but I am working at it and am just so happy I can and want to move my body now !!!

Thank you SP world !!!

Been there done that, I never really enjoyed group classes and driving to the gym was such a waste of time and let alone the opening hours were too late for me so I decided to try doing something else and it was the best decision ever. Go for outdoor cardio; running, cycling or any other outdoor activity. Find what you love most and stick to it it eventually becomes a habit.

I have never stepped foot in a membership gym. I have a scenic neighborhood with great running trails. I own a jump rope and kettle bells too. I also have a nice pool to use during the summer. I like working out alone. I don't want someone breathing down my neck waiting for me to finish on a piece of equipment. I also don't want to feel like I need to look cute while I'm working out. I have a friend that irons her work out clothes when she goes to her gym. Ugh!

I walk, hike, bike or x-country ski at least 50 minutes three to four times a week; do a 10 minute exercise video 3 times a week along with some yoga moves and I do a lot of yard work (in season). But, it's not enough. I need to step up the intensity of my work outs. I absolutely hate going to the gym. So, great ideas. Thanks.

Here's some at home equipment available in most homes
-28 oz cans of veggies
-a broom stick
-empty 1/2 gallon or gallon jugs
-they can be filled with sand or water. I like sand so there's no leaks
-concrete blocks to build a step or platform to use
-a towel folded long way to do stretching or exercise
-a chair
-a door way
-a mirror to make sure your stance is correct
-music
-dvd player
-the internet for exercise programs
-a neighbor
-taking the family or neighbors dog for a walk
And many many more. Just look around. Be creative

These are great ideas, especially for traveling. Because I can't take my gym/classes with me, I will use many of these ideas.

I great book worth having is The Big Book of Exercises, put out by Women's Health. It's packed with exercises grouped by muscle group, has meal plans, and lots of encouragement embedded in the explanations of how the body works. I just LOVE it!

But I'm writing all your ideas down too. And am interested in the Leandro Carvalho DVD.

Thanks a lot !!
