Q: When it comes to weighing yourself, how often do you do it?
A: When I was losing weight, I'd weigh myself every week or every other week. If you're discouraged about not seeing results, PUT THE SCALE AWAY. For a month or so, focus on your eating habits, get yourself into an exercise routine, and then weigh yourself after slowly improving your lifestyle. But the scale is not always a good indication of weight loss. So pay attention to how your clothes fit. Pay attention to your energy levels. Measure your chest, waist, hips, thighs, calves and biceps every other week.

Q: About how long did it take you to get used to your new lifestyle?
A: You learn along the way, and you constantly make improvements to your diet and get into different exercise routines, so you're always getting used to something new. Make small changes!! Don't try to jump into it and change everything about your lifestyle overnight. Don't go from no exercise to exercising an hour everyday and don't restrict your calories too much to the point where you're starving and want to eat everything in sight. Baby steps!!

Q: What are some awesome exercises you live by and love to do?
A: I started out doing Jillian Michaels workouts on DVDs - 30 Day Shred, No More Trouble Zones, Banish Fat Boost Metabolism, Yoga Meltdown and Killer Buns and Thighs (my favorite!!). Then I got into running about 2 years ago, I love it, and then I joined the gym earlier this year and love that too.

For the first 4 years of my losing weight and then maintenance, I weighed-in at least once a day (first thing in the day when I got out of bed and after using the RR), but sometimes I weighed a few times a day. It was interesting to weigh-in just before going to bed, because I was always at my heaviest. However, if weighing-in distresses you, DON'T do it. But you will need a way to gauge a weight-loss progression. Maybe accurately recording calories after you determine your daily calorie burn? For me, I must record weigh-ins daily, or I will never lose weight. (currently, I am not losing weight, and I am not weighing-in daily.)

"About how long did it take you to get used to your new lifestyle?"

It was pretty easy to adjust to losing weight, because I loved seeing the data while I lost the weight. It is fun to see the weigh-ins go down. Unfortunately, maintaining is not much fun for me, so I can not honestly say I have ever gotten use to maintaining.

"What are some awesome exercises you live by and love to do?"

As far as I am concerned, spinning on my AirDyne has been the most effective exercise I have ever done to get the heart rate up and the pounds off. I also enjoy power walking, lifting weights, hitting the heavy bag, and doing hanging abs. But the one exercise that I "live by" is spinning.

Hi!

I only weigh myself on Fridays now. I was weighing myself everyday, sometimes like 6-10 times a day!! But I was driving myself crazy. So now, I only weigh in on Fridays. It is so much easier knowing I dont have to weigh myself everyday anymore

I started again on July 17, 2013. My mother always told me, it takes 3 weeks to form a habit. So I made sure I didn't miss anything for 3 weeks, and now it is just a part of my routine to get up every morning and go to the Gym, so much so, that I have just added Saturdays in too

I love, love love Yoga!! They don't really have good Yoga classes at my Gym (actually none). So everyday I do my version of Yoga. It is a combination of Yoga poses that I love, and just plain stretching. After a workout, it feels soooo good. I do it for 1/2 hour every day

My way is not the recommended method on this site, so I offer this only to prove how well SparkPeople has worked for me. I learned everything I needed to learn from here, and it has enabled me to build a lifestyle that works very well with no effort.

When it comes to weighing yourself, how often do you do it?

I don't. Ever. It never helped me in the past, I obsessed over it, and I'm happier now that I don't even own a scale. I don't know what I weigh, but I do know that I can fit into a size 6 or 8 and I have tons of energy without feeling deprived.

About how long did it take you to get used to your new lifestyle?

I had a lot to learn and it was a gradual process. I am improving my lifestyle all the time and making adjustments to increase physical activity and healthy eating constantly. It is a lifestyle built on slow appropriate changes that are easy to adopt and manage.

In terms of timing - It took 5 or 6 months to really lose any weight at all. When I started, I wore a size 20 and I could barely walk for 10 minutes. I only knew how to make heavy, fattening casseroles and eat cold cereal for breakfast. My body hurt all the time and I was only 27.

By the time I was 30, I had probably lost about 50 lbs. By then, I had re-learned all kinds of things about portion sizes, healthy cooking and exercise. I went from being unable to make it through a 10 minute walk to being able to run a mile without stopping.

I am 34 now, I can run 5 miles without trouble and I have no problems whipping up a healthy menu. I stopped binge eating, I've increased my bone density through exercise and a good diet, and I learned how to prepare healthy food on a tight budget. None of this came easy, but I did learn it all here.

What are some awesome exercises you live by and love to do?

There's no magic - walking is probably the best exercise that is the easiest to build into your life. I developed a love of running, so it's my go-to stress reliever when I need it.

The body can naturally fluctuate by several pounds from day to day, for reasons that have nothing to do with fat loss.

Some people find that weighing every day helps keep them accountable to themselves for their eating and exercise decisions.

Others find that little change (or even increases) in the scale that natural fluctuations implies to be very frustrating and demotivating, and may be better off with a weekly, forthnightly or even monthly weigh-in, which helps keep them focussed on the longer term trend.

Also, the tape is often a much better means of tracking your progress than the scale. Track inches lost, not pounds.

I'm in maintenance now, but when I was losing, I weighed myself about three times a week (M, W, F). I didn't worry about minor fluctuations, though, unless there was a trend. (I actually weigh myself just about as often now.)

I don't really remember how long it took me to get used to the new lifestyle, though I honestly don't remember much of an adjustment period. Once I decided I was changing things, I just changed them and didn't look back.

My main (pretty much my only) cardio exercise is running. I started Couch to 5k last year and fell in love with the sport. I just ran my first half-marathon last weekend and have already decided to train for the Chicago Marathon next October. For strength training, I just do dumbbell and bodyweight exercises at home.

I believe that the number on the scales does not define me. I use how my clothes fit, how well I work out and the kind of things I eat as measure of how I am doing. I do weigh but only once a month. Can't handle the discouragement of the scales and how slow they can move. When I learned that diets don't work and realize that it's a life style change things got better. I got all the junk food out of the house. I put exercise in my life on purpose. I realized that it is my body God gave me so I get do design what it looks like.

I weigh myself every day because I like data and I am more comfortable knowing the truth than wondering about what is going on. However, it sounds like for you, once a week might be a better approach. There is not one right way to do things--you just have to find a way of doing things that works for you.

I loved being able to get back to exercise--I gained weight due to being ill and was not able to move for a long time. I didn't get strict with eating until I had already lost 55 pounds. Initially I found tracking a pain, and of course I don't love doing it, but it was a necessary habit to form. I would say that for each new step that I have taken, the adjustment is about 3-4 weeks. I increase one goal at a time and master a new habit before I add another goal.

I give all new members one piece of advice and it's this,"Don't look at good health or weight loss with an all or nothing mentality". If the only healthy thing you did for yourself today was drink 8 glasses of water, that's still a step in the right direction.

Set some simple goals first. Don't try to do everything at once or you will end up frustrated. Take baby steps literally and figuratively. Remember, you're trying to change habits learned over a life time. That's not going to happen overnight, a week, a month or even a year. Change takes time. Thus the need to be patient with yourself and your body.

How long does it take to make something a habit ? It depends on the person. It could take 6-8 weeks, it could take several months. Nothing is written in stone because we are all very different and unique.

As far as what to do for exercise. What do YOU enjoy doing ? The benefits of exercise go far beyond burning X calories in Y time. Exercise should be fun because when we enjoy doing something, we look forward to doing that something each and every day.

Do you like to dance ? Take dance lessons or maybe try Zumba at the gym. You could swim, ride a bike, take a walk, go skiing or ice skating, take a martial arts class, play tennis, work in your back yard, hiking, golf or even bowling. It's all good.

Do you have a gym membership ? Check out the class schedule. Try something that looks like fun. Don't be afraid to try something new, you may like it. And if you don't, try something else. You keep trying things until you find that one or two things to be really passionate about. And exercise really can be anything.

What you do for exercise really will depend on your goals. So, let me ask you, what are your goals when it comes to fitness ? Because I'll tell you this much, when it comes to weight loss, what matters most is what we eat. Good nutrition is what takes the weight off and keeps it off. Exercise is what keeps our bodies fit and healthy. In short, you can't outrun a bad diet with exercise. If you want to lose weight, you have to eat right first.

That is a mistake many of us made in past. We thought that as long as we were active, what we ate didn't matter. Not true. What we eat DOES matter and so do our portion sizes.
So, if you want to lose weight, eat right and watch your portions. If you want to be fit, find an activity to be passionate about.

I weigh myself very rarely. I go by how my clothes fit and I just started doing measurements which may be a more accurate way to tell for me.
My favorite workouts are walking, of course, but I also like using the youtube videos: cafemom, jillian michaels, lesley sansone walking etc. There are so many different ones that you can find something for any mood you're in and to fit any time frame.
Good luck on your journey, this is a great place to start!

Here I am, back at this again, and though I'd love to say third times the charm this is like my millionth attempt at weightless. So I guess asking a few questions from you fellow people might inspire and help me a lot more.

When it comes to weighing yourself, how often do you do it?
I can't tell you how discouraging it is to step on a scale and see no change. And I believe that's one thing that leads to me giving up and going back to old habits.
