My blood pressure comes down to normal, and my depression comes under control with even 10 minutes of exercise a day.

I also find that I'm eating less when I'm moving.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with just a single step.

When I fall out of my exercise routine, my depression flares up. Working out helps keep my brain in a much better place. Not to mention the good things it does for the rest of me!

I have never finished a workout and thought to myself, "Now, THAT was a waste of time!"

When I worked, I always had other stuff that needed to be done, and I put myself last. Now, I am enjoying nice long walks....usually 7.5 km, but have done 10, to 13 km in one day. Last weekend, I climbed a mountain!!!! And though the weight is not falling off, as I hoped and expected, but I am down from a Sz. 18 to a Sz. 13 jeans, and my diabetic AIC is 7 - which is now normal range. And as well, I have got my LDL and triglycerides down some too... And I have grown muscles.... and toned them!!!! I look and feel better now at 60 than I ever did before.... I was asked at the Walmart yesterday if I needed help getting 40 lb bags of wood pellets in my car and I showed off my biceps, and said, I'm good, but thanks for asking!!!!! Oh yeah! emoticon emoticon

Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance!

Slim is where I wanted to be in 201o & 2011! Never happened, plateaued for a long time and gave up... got off track, but never left, so am back on track again!!! Make 2012 my year! So far, did finally lose 25 lbs. over the summer, but have found about 11 of it so far, it didn't hide good enough...
and lost it again in 2013... going down to 175 this fall, and staying there...this time!

I started with the challenge of 10 minutes per day of exercise....it somehow became 30, since the 10 was so easy. I got a streak of 67 days of at least 30 minutes of exercise per day. I was interrupted by a four day migraine. I started back up, and now I'm up to day 30. Amazingly, I realized that I have not gotten a cold in almost half a year! I have already survived through six colds from my family members (husband and young children bringing home every bug and virus). I am attributing this boost to my immune system from the daily exercise. Yippee!

I workout 5 or sometimes 6 days a week this is something I never would have done until my husband walked out of my life. After being in a marriage that seemed one sided I'm finally free to take the time for me. I've love working out, it clear my mind and not to mention my skin looks brighter, more energy and I'm happier .And the best part about the benefits of exercise is the since of accomplishment when I step on the scale and see that I've lost 87lbs since January 2013. emoticon

Ditto to what everyone else has said. I have had the added benefit of a more vibrant, healthy complexion. People comment on my skin all the time now. I attribute it to better blood circulation overall. That and Revlon.

I struggled with a sort of low-grade depression for years. Once I got into a routine of going to the gym on a regular basis (meaning, I went even when I didn't feel like it), my whole world began to change. It was not instantaneous, and it wasn't occurring in a vacuum, but there was a definite shift in my thinking, and life eventually became a whole lot better because of it. I am the happiest I have ever been, and I attribute most of that happiness to working out. Because, when you're depressed, any sort of change doesn't seem possible. But when you lift weights and track your progress, you realize that physical changes are happening, real, tangible change is taking place because of your efforts - and then that opens up all sorts of new possibilities, because you realize change is not only possible, but that you are actually the one in the driver's seat, and you can make it happen!

I have experienced several benefits (beyond weight loss) due to regular exercise:

*Less symptoms during PMS is a biggie. No more killer headaches and mood swings are minimal. (Thank God!)
*More alert during the day; less foggy-headed.
*Longer and deeper periods of sleep. I used to sleep 5-6 hours a night and frequently woke up during the night. Now I sleep an average of 9 hours a night all the way through.
*No more need to take naps during the day. I have energy all day long.

Even on days when I don't feel like exercising, I go to the gym anyway. I think of the benefits I have been experiencing and really don't want to go back to the days of nasty PMS, low energy and being unable to sleep.

Overall better health, weight loss, low BP, increased cognition, improved self esteem, increased libido, decreased appetite, healthy bone density, improve collagen in skin and other areas of the body, improved endurance, better sleep, increased attention span, increased mood and SP!

Way to go, all of you!!

When I exercise regularly:
I sleep better,
feel more energetic during the day,
have better moods,
have better mental clarity,
do not have irritable legs at night...
The list goes on and on, as there are so many benefits to regular exercise.

Great thread, thanks!

I exercise for at least an hour a day at least 6 days a week. I have been doing this for three years.

--have gone from borderline diabetes to being 20 points below the pre-diabetes range in terms of fasting glucose
--have incredibly shapely legs
--get lots of compliments on my ass
--strong, lean arms
--endorphins!
--have made many good friends through exercise
--improved balance and agility
--ridiculously low blood pressure
--I now have a waist and am discovering that I have a hour-glass figure...who knew!
--endurance...I can walk/hike/garden all day
--mobility...I have fibromyalgia, but am able to keep it under control with exercise. My flares are minimal and I take no drugs for fibro at all. This year I have only had three days where my mobility was severely limited by fibromyalgia.
--good cardiovascular health
--weight loss and MAINTENANCE of weight loss

The biggest benefit is in keeping me motivated and making me feel more in control. For example, last night I put in 30 minutes and about an hour later I got a little hungry. I got a glass of water and a granola bar. I drank the glass of water, but the granola bar was still sitting there, still wrapped, on the coffee table this morning. I didn't feel like I 'shouldn't' eat it, or that I would be 'cheating' if I did. I just felt the water took the edge off and, did I really want it? Did I want to trade in the exercise calories for the granola bar? But what is different is that it wasn't mentally stressful, the rationalizing I was doing between calories in versus calories out. The granola bar sat next to me for 3 hours and never once did I have a moment of not feeling in control of that choice: eat it or not.

Lower blood pressure, better mood overall, much less puffed out when I run or walk fast up hills. I can get on my horse straight from the ground, without having to stand on a block. And my backside looks so good in my new skinny jeans that I got wolf-whistled in the supermarket carpark today -- I am 57!

Blood pressure is better, endurance has improved, carrying heavy objects is easier, and mood is more stable. I'm more likely to get antsy and want to move more now than I ever did as a child. I feel less self conscious about trying new things. I really love the fact that I can run circles around most of my friends.

For one I feel better with regular exercise. Since losing more weight I have been taken off one of the two medications that I was on. I'm working on being medication free. I like seeing the change in my body as I continue improve on my health all the way around.

If I ride my exercise bike for an hour a pop, 5 days a week, I've burned off 1 pound. That's a significant return on investment. It clears my head and changes my frame of mind to a really good place. I love that moment in the workout when my lungs clear, and I breath deeply and freely.

I generally just feel better about myself and the progress that I've made when I regualarly work out. And on top of that I know I'll be able to eat more food that day if keep up the work outs!

My blood pressure has always been on the low normal side but it has lowered even more to the range of professional athletes and children. My resting heart rate used to be around 70-80 bpm now it's between 50-60 bpm. It's very difficult for me to get winded. I can run nearly as fast as my husband. I have way more energy during the day and need less sleep. I'm way stronger (strength training); have a one rep max of 117 lbs for bench press, 138 lbs for squats, 206 lbs for deadlift and 82 lbs for overhead press at 5'2 and 120 lbs.

"Toning" is marketing muscles to women who are afraid if they pick up a barbell, they'll leave the gym looking like She-Hulk. If you don't want to get bulky, lift heavy!

I can bench Nicole Richie, eat more than she does in a day before noon, I have a good 20 lbs on her but could still wear her pants.

I've noticed the most that my blood pressure has lowered significantly, I now get 8 un-interrupted hours of sleep per night and wake up refreshed, and most of all, my mood has improved TREMENDOUSLY. I have been diagnosed with a mental illness for years and I kept thinking I needed more pills but in reality I might have just needed to take care of my body. What benefits have you noticed?

Take it one day at a time. :)
