I think people, in general, will work out when it suits them best. I wouldn't work out on an empty stomach no matter the time of day. I prefer doing my cardio in the morning because I feel better afterwards and feel like I have accomplished something before getting my day started. I do eat something before I workout. I don't eat too much, but enough so that I am not uncomfortable from being hungry or too full. After I workout, I eat again (milk and yogurt or milk and oatmeal). I do my strength training at home in the afternoon/evenings. I don't like doing any kind of working out if my stomach is full and would wait at least an hour before doing anything. I think most people wait if their stomach is full.

I have always been told that you shouldn't exercise on an empty stomach because it will weaken your performance. If I do workout in the morning I will grab myself a piece of fruit then go out. If I workout in the evening I wait about an hour after dinner and make sure that I have protein and carbs in my meal along with sufficient water to help fuel my body.

It kind of makes me laugh because my personal trainer friend/co-worker says he exercises first thing in the morning on an empty stomach because it burns more fat. Then again, this is the guy who takes Hydroxycut in order to lose his belly...

When I do exercise in the morning (which is rare these days...90% of the time I go to the gym after work) I'll grab a banana beforehand and then eat an actual breakfast at home after I finish my workout.

To me, working out on an empty stomach means that I'm working out while hungry, not working out after not eating for a while. The former is problematic because hunger is a distraction and I'm not able to work at full intensity. The later just means that my body is satisfied with it's nutrient and calorie stores and doesn't need anything additional before I start exercising.

But you're definitely on to something Meeramody, the things listed in the opening paragraph don't relate much to what's addressed in the body of the article.

ETA: Interesting, Coach Jen. A quick google produced this study: jap.physiology.org/content/110/1/236.long that suggests the opposite. Granted, I'm sure we could find an equal amount of studies supporting each side of the argument. Not that I really have a horse in the race, I exercise in the morning because its more convenient.

A lot of people think that exercising on an empty stomach burns more fat or can speed up your metabolism, which isn't true. It doesn't mean doing that will slow down your metabolism, it just means it's not going to help.

Can you provide a link to that article so I can see exactly what it says?

In general, we do recommend morning exercise with something in your stomach since it's been so long since your last meal. But for a lot of people, they feel sick if they try to exercise. So you really should do whatever works best for you. Personally, I can eat something small and then work out right away, but others have to wait a while. It kind of depends on the individual, so experiment to figure out what works for you.

I heard on the news that the best benefited time for exercise is from 5-7 p.m. when your body is at it's warmest temp of the day. I switched my routine recently from evenings to mornings because I thought I would have more time. Sometimes the day gets away from me and it's too close to bedtime for exercise. I also thought it would help wake me up and condition me to be more of a morning person. I would be interested to hear other opinions on this topic. Hopefully, you benefit from working out regardless of the time of day, and you just have to find what works best for you.

I just read in one of the sparkpeople articles that working out in the morning before eating any food slows down one's metabolism and reduces the benefit of exercising. If this is correct, what makes for a good breakfast before the morning exercise and how long should one wait before exercising after that breakfast?
