When it comes to weight loss, it is basically about the total calories burned and consumed, not about the specifics of your workout.

But generally speaking, you are better off with a more intense workout, as it gets your heart rate higher and creates more health and fitness benefits.

But I don't know why you have to choose. Why not run/walk for 30 minutes. If you are too tired, slow down your running pace.

Incidentally, a Couch to 5K program will progressively increase the running intervals so that you are running 30 minutes. www.sparkpeople.com/resource/fitness_artic

Thanks Everyone!
I am also doing 20 minutes on the stationary bike alternating levels and 10 min on the stair stepper(which kicks my butt by the way).

agreed that what you are doing by running some walking some is so much better. Keep up the good work. I do the same for 45 minutes on my treadmill. I do it at 4.0 to 4.6. Go get this...........

Well, intervals are better, but just because you are doing intervals doesn't mean that you can cut your time down by 1/3.

What are you doing for the rest of your workout?

Switching between running and walking is a very great way to work towards running longer distances and times. There are several programs that are based on that same concept (Jeff Galloway and Couch 2 5K are a couple). You are getting a great workout! Keep it up!

You have a choice. You can throw in the towel, or you can use it to wipe the sweat off of your face.

Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it lasts forever.

Nice work so far! I like doing intervals because it keeps me mentally engaged more than just going at a steady state. In order to work up to running, take a look at a couch 2 5k program (free on SP or free online). You're on the right track but it might add a little more structure to your workouts.

I have been walking at 3.5 on the treadmill for 3 min and then jogging at 4.5 for 2 min for a total of 20 min. I was wondering if it is better to walk steady for 30 min or am I getting just as good of a workout alternating for only 20min. I feel great afterwards though my legs feel like jelly but I am hoping to be able to run for 30 min straight one day.
