This can be addressed as a compromise with doing what you love and also adding more challenge at intervals. If you like to walk try doing a speed walk at 5 min intervals or less. Skip, hop, run, job or carry and jump rope and do that every 5 min or so. I use my elliptical and that allows me to do quick intervals of going like I am in a race to speed up my heart!

I love to walk and i find walking with someone makes it seem easier..you talk to each other and the distance doesnt seem so far..the time goes faster when you're walking with someone.

I do what I love, and I try to make it work for me.
I also do things that I believe work best, but if I do not enjoy it, or find something I like then it feel dreary.

I am also trying to find a way back to things I enjoy. I like yoga, but all the stuff on the floor has made my back problems worse. My back problems are not muscles, it is something further inside, like a nerve. I need to see a doctor about it but I keep pushing it off since it doesn't affect my everyday life, it just limits what exercises I can do.

If I had money, and a big enough place, I would do a bike or treadmill in front of a tv. I watch a lot of tv, and if I kept moving while watching I would get in a heck of a lot of exercise.

Currently I do strength training, and very limited cardio. I hate cardio. I can also last longer at strength training than I can cardio. I will eventually add in cardio, but I want to build up the strength of muscles first. If the muscles get built up, and maybe more energy from regularly exercising, then I will slowly add more and more cardio.
I do some Gold's Gym Cardio Workout, which I love, but I need more cardio than just a wii game.

When I do what works best, I usually learn to love it. Win-win!

Baby steps turn to leaps and bounds! "Just today" turns into a lifetime of improved health and fitness. It turned this body from a size 18+ to a size 4-6! Maintaining my new life, habits and body.

Step aerobics .... WORKS ... that is a given ...

I had done so much step aerobics (and had been so enjoyable, too--to me) way back ... and so frequently,, that I'd wound up developing heel spurs and plantar fasciitis; and had done no favors to the hairline fracture on my injured right knee ...

FACT: It is not being overweight that can cause foot problems. ...

I'd say, if you are just starting out, or starting over, or again for the umpteenth time, do what you love. After 6 weeks, when your body has adapted and it needs a change, ADD what works, but do not give up what you love. Interchange it. I like to walk, but when I can't I do what I have to do and that is step aerobics. It's more boring than walking to me, but my real perk with both activities is music. Music is a big part of my life, and as long as I have it, I can do just about anything.

I remember riding the bus, and this had been in the cosmopolitan city of Miami Beach, Florida ... and I had been young - in my 20's and a SIZE 20 - wearing an outfit that cost me hundreds of dollars, my then-husband helped pick it out ... and somewhere from the back of the bus, an otherwise intelligent service worker was mentioning to her group of friends ... "she must have got that from the 'Large n' Lovely' store"

I felt mortified. And I had gotten it from a designer-owned store called - I forget the name - something like The Positively Plus Shoppe or something ... it was a shopping spree my then husband twisted my arm in to my going-on ...

For 50 years, I did what I loved. I played ball. Racquetball, basketball, football, handball, volleyball, walleyball, softball. I ran too; but I only ran to be in shape for basketball.

Since I can no longer run or play ball, I now do what works best, which in this phase is what works at all.

My brother -- 5 years younger is in the same boat (still afloat, but in need of significant "baling" ;-)).

Still exercise is enjoyable; it improves my life in so many ways.

I love my exercise bike in front of the TV. I pedal and watch TV instead f just sitting while watching TV. I also love to walk. I'm 67 and walk at least 3 miles a day. It keeps me fit and improves my health.

I think you need to do what you love! Perhaps, you can kick it up a few notches by either adding mileage or jog for awhile. Or, you could try and find another activity to add to your walk like a Zumba class. I hear wonderful things and people really sweat while they enjoy. But, find something you love because chances are you will not stick with it if you don't.

Motivation gets us started. Habit keeps us going!

Now that I am a low-carber ... I still am a product of my (former) size ... lol ...

I fall more-or-less firmly on the side of enjoyable movement ...

[They talk about the] "punishment model. Rather than eating healthy, nutrient-rich food that tastes great for the health benefits of it, we primarily eat it to lose weight in this culture. Instead of moving our bodies (i.e., exercise) for the simple joy of moving our bodies, we only 'torture' ourselves to lose weight in this culture."

For my health condition, it has to be cardio. HOWEVER, of late, I have found that I have managed to forge a hatha/vinyasa yoga-pilates fusion practice that is followable via audio mp3 [totally authored by me--with a little help (influence, actually) from one of the online instructors at myyogaonline--the most recent part]. It is the same practice I've BEEN doing, but I will be able to do it in heavier rotation because it is now "cardio enough" for my needs. But I'll turn to cardio bellydance *first*. It takes "less time to do" .... MUCH less time ... for the same (quantified via the glucometer!) results!!

And it's more fun ... emoticon

I alternate! Dancing of walking with kickboxing, running, and strength training. I hate to do it, but I love the results of strength training- much better metabolism, mood, and better fitting clothes!

For me it has to be what I enjoy doing. Only. I'll be honest..I hate working out. There, I said it. I don't even call it working out, I refer to it as exercising. But I have found I enjoy yoga, and I've even found my stationary bike isn't so bad. So for me, it has to be what I enjoy doing, cause if I don't like it, I'm simply not doing it. And it's really been working for me, I lost 12 pounds in 5 weeks ~ so I really can't complain :)

Inches Inches Inches lost are more important to me than pounds... :) well POUNDS ARE STILL IMPORTANT NOT AS MUCH AS INCHES THOSE SHOW THE REAL PROGRESS AND THAT IS A HEALTHIER WAY TO MAINTAIN YOUR WEIGHT!!

My rule for myself is that, on the days when I absolutely positively don't feel like doing anything, I just do something I love for "fun exercise". However, on the rest of the days, I find a way to challenge myself. You can do this in two ways. First, you can resolve that you are going to spin one day a week to start with. Or second, resolve that you are going to run a few fast, hard sprints at the beginning of your walk, and then just enjoy the rest of it as usual. More important than anything is to find a way to exercise that works for you FOREVER. Any movement is better than none but if you can step it up and challenge yourself occassionally, you will continue to see improvements in various ways.

Couch surfing?

There had been a time I was couch surfing a lot ... I had been long-term unemployed. I don't consider couch surfing: staying with a succession of relatives for long periods of time, a fitness activity. It's more a survival activity--although some fitness was involved during periods of undermployment. During that time, I lifted weights and did the recumbent cycle. The bulk of the fitness activities were done at home.

I'm fortunate in that what I enjoy doing for exercise (running + martial arts) is feasible/affordable and generally beneficial. That said, there are additional/other things (like more strength training) I could probably do which might be "better" or would make me "better" at the things I love to do. At the same time, I only have so many hours in the day, and I don't want to waste them forcing myself to do exercises I don't enjoy for marginal benefits. If what I loved to do was couch surfing, I'd have a different answer...this is just based on my own personal experience.

I say as long as its feasible and not going to harm you in the long run do what you love. You only live once. We have to try and make the very best of our lives! With that though comes accepting the things you can not change. If its not possible then just learn to love what you can do. emoticon

@BUSYGRANNY5, I KNOW exactly what you're talking about ... this nearly happened to me with, of all things ... yoga, which had been my first love.

But when, in a certain series of classes at a certain studio, it had started to become an endurance contest - even in the so-called Level 1 class ... and if I'd gotten centered from it, it was only on a fluke ...

I took matters into my own hands (and, of course, back to its roots in its having been born of my own lengthy routine (the closest popular/available in the market equivalent I could find was "Rodney Yee/Mariel Hemingway's yoganow"--and that was entirely coincidental) on a gym's stretching area ...

With some studio influence retained, it morphed into a not particularly slow moving vinyasa yoga/pilates fusion routine that is my go-to ... accidentally a bit of Shiva Rea via J.C. Peters in there, too ... but I'd finally found that from the brick-and-mortar world recently; though -- regrettably, temporarily -- at a different studio ...

I've tried to do workout routines that I feel like I need to do because they'll make me physically stronger, help me get in shape, etc.. At times I have grown to "like" some of these routines and they continue to be a part of my life; however there have been a few that I have made the conscience choice to quit, as I just couldn't get to the point where I "liked" them... The choice to "quit" a routine doesn't come easy for me, as I believe in finishing what I start, but after at least six sessions of a new routine if I just am NOT enjoying it... I will and have quit!! It's not about how difficult the routine is, it's about do I enjoy what I'm doing, if I really, truly, don't enjoy what I'm doing it will NOT be come a habit and therefore not a healthy part of my life! Thank goodness, this has only happened twice with cardio kick boxing and then again with cross fit training.

Sometimes, and for some conditions, "what you love" does nada for you.

I got a chance to do walking--in the way that I can--even in the process of getting chores done and shooting the breeze, "New Urbanism-style" with the local business people. For all its topographical challenges I'm living in a 97 or 98% walkable nabe www.walkscore.com/ [I am NO exurban walker--never WAS!!]

Delightful, done - not by my own will, of course - in low rotation. Would want it badly.
Can't afford to need it.

Swimming, on the other hand - a very distant, very fond memory by now ... walking edged it out, even then ...

Sometimes what you love is not what is convenient or natural. I love swimming- but there is no pool unless I drive an hour. We have a lake outside. It's not gonna be natural to swim form now until next year,. so now I will have to find another sport (Nordic walking) until next summer.
