Here the YMCA does not turn people away for the inability to pay. For my 3 kids and myself I pay under 30 per month. This gets me group fitness classes, pool, weight rooms, child care while I work out etc. The small expense also make me feel guilty if I do not go. Plus members can join sports teams for free and 2 of my kids have done that before. It helps me meet people that hold me accountable also!

Does dancing around the house like an idiot while you clean count? emoticon Yes that is me you see through the window from outside! I like walking when it isn't so cold outside, but unfortunately it is that time of year again. Luckily I am on my feet and walking nonstop at work, which also involves a lot of repetitive lifting.

Oh, it's a good thing my batteries ran down by inadvertently recording sounds from the interior of the backpack I stuffed the mp3 recorder in, probably off and on, for a total of nearly 8 hours!

Because then I had incentive to upload the file to iTunes on the Dell ...

Lo and behold, the part I had not gotten to (in listening to) ... of the now newly-named "Ganesh Fusion Flow Yoga by SEA Change" ... has more recorded upstairs neighbor noise in the background (even when recorded in "Meeting Mode" ...)

It could be an F.M.L. moment, but I choose to look at it as an opportunity to practice Pratyahara (one of the behavioral tenets of yoga--"to turn inward and tune out distraction") to the second power ... live new extraneous noise mixed with pre recorded extraneous noise ...

Never said I was building a home recording studio ... if I can't afford (time, energy, money wise) to attend classes at a yoga studio, I certainly don't have the bucks to erect a home recording venue ...

running in place-- free
jogging outside- free
jumping up and down- free
burpees- free
push ups- free
squats- free
over head presses- free (use soup cans or something you have in your house)
crunches- free
split squats- free
walking- free

above are just a few examples. for the most part you don't need equipment. just some space in your living room and the time to do it.

i mainly do circuit training and use body weight primarily. I have invested in some weights and a trampoline but you don't necessarily need those.

Here is one. You take seven exercises, which don't require equipment, do them one right after the other with no to minimum rest, and then that is a set. Rest if needed and then go into the next set. It will get your heart rate up and strengthen your muscles at the same time. You don't need a gym or any special equipment. As the exercise gets easier you can add more reps to each exercise and/or do more sets.

For example:

SIX SETS (push-ups, jump jacks, pull ups, vee-ups, super-man's, squats, bear crawling)

I use the library in my city and borrow their exercise videos. They have enough that I can rotate them in and out. We can keep each video for two weeks, so I get two at a time and use them on alternating days. I even put holds on the ones I like.

Everyone's hit on all the good ones, but here's one more: doing an online challenge. This past summer I did the squat challenge and the abs challenge. I got mine from http://30dayfitnesschallenges.com/ - printed off the table/chart and marked it off each day.

I don't like electronic gadgets either. I'm getting to be an old lady, and never did have that kind of job where I needed connectivity (nor was it ever offered to be reimbursed by the boss--BIG determinant in that). I never had an iPod or other music player of that sort - still don't have one, and lasted all of just one year with a smartphone--had been happy with it until I'd gotten hacked and then bombarded with emails by a merchant. Now, I'm back to a basic phone, I am on the phone with technical support for that phone a bit more than is necessary.

However, I DO know my own notebook computer and have to coach my coworker (and others) in system 7 and advanced command tree functions in the more popular applications of Microsoft Office.

Just because.

But my mp3 recorder is for a very practical purpose (and a necessary evil). I record my own yoga sessions, so after a long 11 hour workday, I get to be guided (and with ALL the bells and whistles of "class"--I need a special kind of yoga class! -- my own!) ... I'm getting good at it, and beating the $22 a class New York City area studio AT ITS OWN GAME emoticon

But technology it seems with me - just like with dogs - I only can understand the bigger devices... emoticon

I make goop use of the SP videos. I've let everyone know that for Christmas and birthdays I want exercise DVD's and equipment. I make a list of what I want, remember most of these people would look at the list and have no idea what you are talking about, be exact and if posable tell them where they can get it. I have gotten DVD's, step up, dumbbells, exercise ball and exercise bands. Most of these things are inexpensive, so people are more then willing to get them. I'm old fashion and don't like all the new electronic gadgets, but DGS shows me that with an old lap top I could get my SP videos and so much more on you tube. The lap top was free. Someone was up grading, said It didn't have all the bells and whistles but would do what I wanted.

If you have you tube and a tablet, or a computer you can watch workouts for free on the internet. I do that to keep variety in my workouts.

Budget friendly workout idea, with the twist of all twists:

Perhaps I sound like an idiot here, but "I Need all the Reassurance in the World":

This is a letter I sent to Apple itunes:

"I have several mp3 recordings [of my original, authored workouts] that are not yet copyrighted. I have chosen to upload them from a high quality dedicated digital recording device, to itunes because the playback quality on my PC laptop is unquestionably superior to that of Windows Media Player.

"I need to know if the content is available in the cloud and that nobody has access to this portion of the cloud.

"If it is helpful to you, upon updating, I chose not to share my Library, which contains copyrighted, creative commons, and these truly uncopyrighted [original audio workout sequences]. Also itunes is not my default player.

"Thank you."

walking is free....after shoes. If possible plan a route that has some hills, or better yet STAIRS! In the bad weather walk a mall and use the STAIRS!! (or parking garage....again, STAIRS!). And, there is always up and down a flight few times from your first floor to the second.

I echo the youtube thing. I did Leslie Sansone all last winter. I was looking yesterday found some dance class type ones. I've also done belly dancing. I've found quite a few handweights at Goodwill really cheap. The one trainer I talked to (can't afford one) said pushups for arms and back are the best. Even if you have to start with wall ones. Squats for legs. And planks. So I can't claim that just because I can't join a gym I can't have good muscle tone. emoticon Good luck!!

Running and walking are almost free, although they require good footwear. There are also body weight exercises (pushups, situps, squats, etc.) that are free. If you can demonstrate financial need the YMCA may give you a discounted membership or let you go for free.

YouTube has tons of great videos that cost nothing more than your cable bill. I love doing the YOGA from Priscilla Patrick that is on YT from her PBS show back in the 90's. She still teaches Yoga at age 71.

Sorry to hear about your job loss. Good for you for using the time to take care of yourself.

Just wanted to share a report I heard about going back to school after a job loss. Lots of people are doing that, racking up tons of debt, and at the end of school, finding that the job market is just as bad in their new profession as in their old. As far as money goes, they would have been better off with no job and no debt, than no job and new debt. Just something to think about.

Really good and free workout videos are available online at http://www.fitsugar.com/workouts and on SparkPeople.

The only equipment I use regularly are 5, 8 and 10 lb dumbbells and a yoga mat. TJMaxx, Wal-Mart and Academy Sports are the cheapest places to buy.

Also, try a variety of workout videos from the library. My favorites have been The Biggest Loser series and Slim in 6 by Beach Body. Since the videos are really challenging, I alternate it with walking in the neighborhood or local park.

Good luck!

It is an online streaming video service. Think of netflix with all workout videos. They have a 30 day free trial and it's $10 per month if you continue. I've really enjoyed all the variety and they also have different programs you can follow.

I have picked up some videos on Amazon at pretty good discounts. Whenever I order something and need to spend a bit more to get free shipping I look at the exercise videos to see what is available. With my last order, I got The Biggest Loser "Power Walk" Video which retails for $14.98 for $6.99.

Weights can get so expensive. An easy and affordable way to get weights is to reuse bottles. Start out with soda bottles and fill with water. Then when you need more add pebbles or sand. Graduate up to larger bottles like one liters then up to gallon jugs or two liters.

I love the Walk Away the Lbs dvds by Leslie Sansone....they are great motivators to get up and move around. some dvds incorporate bands, weights (5-10lbs), but for all you just need a pair of sneakers and move the furniture out of the way and get to moving.

My health insurance IS paid up, but ... look, I surely don't have the coordination, I'm 59 years old, have multiple orthopedic problems, and lack of balance (along with being a diabetic) ... I've even heard about free-running www.care2.com/greenliving/5-wacky-running-
trends-youll-want-to-try-yourself.html

Sometimes, ya gotta let kids be kids ... and do something age-appropriate ("I am speaking generally here") ... NO parkour for me .... and I've witnessed parkour-conditioning at an upscale gym's stretching area (under no real supervision, of course) - so no guarantee of its being budget friendly ...

Clothes, sneakers and step outside. Let the world be your treadmill and playground. Hang from or climb trees to work your upper body or find an under used playground (if self conscious) for pull ups and chin ups. You're only limited by your imagination. If your health insurance in payed up you could even try parkour!

I agree with the library suggestion. I tried several dvds out before committing to purchase that way. You also get a good variety. The Firm DVDs are pretty good for beginner to intermediate, and I like the Biggest Loser workouts and some of the Billy Blanks Tae Bo ones.

You may want to check with your local library. Mine has a wide collection of workout DVDs, from Ab-focused to Zumba. If you want to change up your workout, rent a new workout DVD or two. I find that by the time I'm getting bored with the workout, it's time to return the DVD and get a new one anyway. If I really like the workout, I can check it out multiple times.

Walking is the easiest and cheapest way to start a workout program. If you want to join a gym, start with a trial program (most gyms have these for free for 1 week or not too much money for 1 month). The least expensive gym is "Planet Fitness" for either $20 premier (lets you bring a friend with you anytime and other extra's depending on club facilities, plus you can use any PF in any city.) Or they have the basic $10 a month, you still get the free coaching in groups with this option too. See if your city has any walking paths, this makes for a change of pace if you get bored walking around your neighborhood. Also look for hiking clubs around the country (Meetup Groups online can help you with this and other fun exercise groups such as dancing/zumba), most of these hikes are free but some do cost for parking and entrance fees to certain areas. Use exercise dvd's, buy some dumbbells at a yard sale or when on sale at sporting goods stores.

Walking, Mall walking (leave the purse in the car!!!), sit-ups/push-ups during commercials, soup cans as weights, swimming at the lake, household chores, running up and down stairs, jumping jacks, etc. are all my go-to exercises since I also don't have a lot of disposable income.

My budget friendly workout started in college when, as a single mother and working, I had to figure out how to fit exercise into my day.

I started jogging in 1975, in Keds shoes, and old shorts. They were inexpensive. I didn't need special equipment, a gym,nor pay for classes, a buddy (though that makes it more fun!), nor fancy clothing. All I did was run around the house or block when the baby was sleeping early in the morning. I was back, showed, dressed by 6:30 AM, and out the door with baby by 7:30 AM for 8 AM classes at school.

I have been jogging ever since.....

Volunteer some place that will make you move. Walk dogs at the local shelter for example. Spend a few hours on your feet at the soup kitchen or sorting clothes at the homeless shelter. Not only will you get your workout but the self esteem boost from doing good for others while doing good for yourself is truly powerful!

The universe gives us what we think about most...the more we dwell on our shortcomings, the more the universe gives us. Grief, debt, weight etc......
Stay positive and envision your goals daily...the universe will give you what you think about the most. Hope is the most powerful drug available to us!

Borrow fun exercise DVDs from the library - it's a fun way to get a great variety and free!! Full water bottles or large cans of soup can be used for hand weights. Use your own body weight for exercises against furniture and the walls. Have fun!
