I really liked the couch to 5k plan and I think it is very good way to get you started for a 5k

They have some great apps that time you between walking a running. I did it and lost 2 inches off my waistline and started to tone up everywhere else.

As others have said, most Couch to 5k programs are 9 or 10 weeks. However, all the ones I have seen are based on time, not distance, and get you to running 30 minutes...which for me at the time wasn't even close to 5k. So when I finished the "official" C25k, I continued adding time to my runs each week until I had reached 5k. That took me to the beginning of week 13 (and about 40 minutes).

Go for it. Even if you end up walking part of the 5k, it's a terrific goal. I did the couch to 5k also. It's great.

Congratulations! emoticon

I've used Couch to 5K as well. That works really well for me. When I first used it, I doubled a few of the weeks if they were tough/if I had some extra time. It's an awesome goal!

Here are SparkPeople's 5k training plans you might find helpful:

You should have enough time to be ready to run a 5k in December.

Good luck!

Google 'Couch to 5k.' Most plans take you from 30 mins of walking to 30 minutes of running in about 8-10 weeks

I have recently started making changes to my lifestyle to be healthier for my family and myself. However, I have never been a runner. My son has asked me to run a 5K with him in December. My question is how long do you need to train to go from walking to 3 mile run.
