i have made it a priority to walk daily. my goal is 1000 days. that will be january 26, 2016.
i've done it once before and it was hard, but, i managed. so, i thought i'd try it again.

good luck.

i also hoop in my living room for 10 minutes at a time. it's fun and i can fit it in usually before i go to bed.

Blessed are the flexible, for they shall not be bent out of shape.

In a new effort to avoid going to the movement studio because "that costs too much money", I have decided that I could do worse than by picking the cheesy video instructors from now on, to be my benchmark sessions; sifted in to whatever else I do ... so I went shopping online and am eagerly awaiting delivery of a new dvd video ...

Not exactly sure how scalable this move is, for others ... but there is nothing more motivating than a smiling, gracious video instructor ... even one who doesn't seem to sweat (while you are) ...

Also, neatening and beautifying your at-home workout area works wonders.

I have a gym membership. I plan my week's worth of workouts (classes at the gym) and try to go to most of them.

I am an after-work exerciser, so the workouts begins between 5:30 and 6:30pm (though I prefer to be done by 7 at the latest). My gym offers a lot of classes, so even if I miss one, there are others to choose from.

This short-range flexibility really works for me.

I use the app GymPact to keep me motivated to work out. The basic premise is you set your pact for the week, which is how many days that week (Monday-Sunday) that you plan to work out for at least 30 minutes. Based on your pact, you will earn some money for completing that daily workout. If you don't fulfill your pact by the end of the week, you will owe money for the days you didn't complete. For example, last week my pact was 4 days and $5 per day missed. I completed all 4 days so I didn't owe any money. Typically you make 30-50 cents per workout; no, it's not a lot, but if you plan to workout anyways, you might as well get paid for it!

I try to work out in the am before work. I recently bought a treadmill and elliptical machine on craigslist- I put them in my basement...I record loads of tv shows, and watch while I work out...it makes the time go quickly and it's better than sitting on the couch and watching! I do not like to exercise and have to convince myself to get it done but I feel so proud and in control when I get do..Fit by 50 is my goal!

I met a girlfriend to lift earlier this week at 8AM. We usually meet in the early evenings after work, or on Saturday morning. It was very hard to get things going to exercise that early, but WOW was it wonderful! First of all the gym was empty and the equipment was free - meaning our 60 minute work out was closer to 50 minutes because we were able to move so quickly. Secondly, it felt so good to start the day off with exercise! And third, of course it was really nice when the end of the day arrived that we were free to do other things.

Wish I could fit it in first thing in the morning every week, but getting up that early (we would have to meet at 4:30 am to make that work with our normal schedules) just isn't going to happen, So we're back to evening work outs, except on the weekends.

To Scrappygalss,
You are awesome, this is the way to make it work for you. You are an inspiration for me in how you find ways to fit in exercise and then it doesn't seem to much like exercise. I started over once again and I have put my calendar on my wall next to my treadmill. I wrote my treadmill appointments and when I 'm done I write DONE for that day. Then I can see my accomplishments, its a start to get me back on track. I will keep what you shared to try and input it into my days. Thank you for sharing!

I'm glad ( but not glad! ) that others have the same problem as me......I just can't convince myself to exercise as I should. I thought I was the ony one! I have to really force myself. Now I tell myself to just do 15 minutes walking until the end of October and then try to increase. Every time I have tried to increase the amount of time walking, I have a harder time doing anything. I'm thinking better a little bit than nothing.

I have such a hard time getting up to work out in the mornings as well. I get off work at 10 at night and hit the bed by twelve with a goal to get up at 7 am. the thing for me is working out after work benefits me because I pass the gym on my way home from work. I have a dog that I walk every morning before work though and he reminds me by growling at me if I don't take him out on the dot!

I Jazzercise 3 days a week and write it down on my date book before I make any other dates.
My husband and I have a date to walk every day at least 1/2 mile. My husband helps me to remember both of these exercise dates with myself because he knows I'm much easier to live with if I get my exercise every day. I also get up early each morning to do 1/2 hour of yoga 5 days a week. So far, I've managed to stay fit and healthy even at the age of 82. emoticon

The "trick" I use is each morning when I wake up and want to skip it I say (out LOUD), "I'm just going to do it today, tomorrow I will sleep in."

Of course, tomorrow I say the same thing. For some reason, this works for me because I feel like I am giving myself permission to sleep in tomorrow. And, each day I make the choice to wait until tomorrow to sleep in. LOL.

Whatever works right? Some might call it mind games but I call it...slow and steady wins the race!

Is it tomorrow already?

Great job, BrendaCDB! You are an inspiration to me! I lost 110 pounds through gastric bypass surgery. It is not the way to go. After the surgery, it is very difficult for your body to absorb essential nutrients. My lowest point was 174 pounds. Over the last 3 years, I have crept back up to 200 pounds. My goal at the beginning of the year was to lose 25 pounds. Unfortunately, I gained five pounds instead. I started my diet again at least five times.

My wellness program at work gives me financial benefits from earning points for wellness activities.

It was a struggle for me to get out this morning. It is Sunday, I have no appointments and no commitments other than to do laundry and pay my bills. So, I finally made it outside and determined to do two laps around my apartment complex. I did 2 1/2 laps around the complex. More than any other day this year. And my average speed was 2.7 miles per hour. That is also an improvement. My average for the year has been 2.5 miles per hour.

Anyway, I am very happy for you that you have lost so much weight, so fast. Keep up the good work. But, don't be hard on yourself if you exercise less one day.

Way to Go!

I've held off sticking in my 2 cents on this thread for a very long time:

Overthe past few years, it seems a combination of factors can help me keep my exercise "dates" --
Sometimes, it involves my putting in an occasional appearance in a killer "live" studio class (do not have the budget for three times a week ... maybe twice a MONTH for the live class) ... so I cross-train with recorded, and self-recorded lengthy (50+ minutes duration) workouts at home ...

This is in the field(s) of cardio belly dance, yoga, pilates and yoga/pilates fusion (and their associated spinoffs) ... I'm a little older and a little bit frail ...

I am not the rest of all of you concerned, but I'm pretty sure this (budget-sparing, character-enhancing - perhaps) advice could be adaptable/scalable to a bootcamp-type-class situation or even some kind of marathon ... Why pay for membership in a group ? But if you have to, attenuate the expense - greatly this way ...

With a lot of errands scheduled today, I wasn't sure when I'd get in some exercise. However, I arrived 30 minutes early for a lunch date with my husband. Rather than wait in the car for him, I carefully walked 20 minutes around the parking lot. I felt much better after that walk than I would have just sitting in the car listening to a cd. So glad for the walk!! It was a beautiful day for it too!

I also exercise in the morning before work and get it out of the way. If I don't exercise for one reason or another, its harder for me to enjoy the day. I don't really enjoy working out but I always feel better when I do.

Morning is best for me before anything else can get in the way. I prefer to exercise in the afternoon but if something comes up and interferes with my plans, I try to do something at home before I go to bed. Jumping jacks, push ups, squats, lunges are all things I can do at home. I just feel better if I do something, anything emoticon

Keeping a date with yourself is important. You can't be there for the others in your life unless you take time to be there for yourself.
I am awful at this, it seems there are always a million other "important" things to be done! Make yourself a priority and try to squeeze exercising into unexpected places.
Elevator at work? Take the stairs!
Park at the far end of the parking lot, and the hoof it into the grocery store.
Wii Fit is a fun alternative with the family too!
Find a friend and make plans to exercise with them! You are much less likely to bail out when you know someone else is counting on you!

Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as the sunshine into the trees. The winds will blow their freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves.

We recently moved to a new town and I have been looking in the paper for free or cheap fitness events to put on the calendar. I have 3 kids-1 is full time student, 1 is 1/2 day student, one goes to preschool 2 full days a week and a husband who works from home 3 weeks a month and out of town one week a month. I have 1.5 hours to myself on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.

For instance, there's adult only ice skating 1-2pm on Thursdays. , so I've started ice skating! It's really hard, but burns 500 calories for an hour and it's more fun than running for an hour at the gym!

There's a walking group at the local arena that meets and walks, another that bikes.

The new town is also fairly flat and very small. So I bike or walk everywhere I can! To the store, to my inlaws' house, etc. I got a new bike and we have a bike trailer that will fit 2 kids +/- groceries, so if I don't need to do a major grocery shop, I ride my bike to the grocery store. We have no mail delivery here-only post office, so I run to the post office after I drop the kids off. The kids are in various stages of riding bikes (trike, training wheels and 2 wheeler) so sometimes I let all of them ride to the local farmer's market while I walk. We also live next to an elementary that used to be a high school so there's a track. So sometimes the kids will ride bikes out front of our house and I'll go right next door and run a few times around the track, check on them, run a few more, etc.

This weekend I would run a few laps, then got my 30 pound son on my back and did some plies down the sidewalk and some plank in the driveway.

Sometimes when you can't make a date you have to be creative! I don't like exercise, so incorporating it into running errands, etc is an easy way for me to "trick" myself into exercising... even if you don't live near shopping, etc. park at your first errand and walk to the others! 10 minutes of walking quickly is 75-100 calories!

Good gracious, that was me for the first time this morning . i remember exactly. I got up this morning with the resolve to get on the tread mill and as usual procastanation put up a good fight but i won. I reminded myself of the reasons I needed to exercise and my mirror confirmed it. Today i am a winner. the prize.... i burned a few extra calories. Yay!!!
Hopefully , I will repeat this action again and again and again.

Hi,I am new at this. I love , love , love this program. I started my diet October 2, 2013 my beginning weight was origionally 293lbs. I am currently down to 280lbs. It is a lot of work and I have to keep talking to myself so that I can stay on track. Each time I feel a food weakness coming on that would sabortage my progress I tell myself that must have RELENTLESS DETERMINATION. So far so good. I have a long way to go. So anything that you can share will be greatly appreciated

Yes I do, I'm determined to lose this weight for good. I've lost 87lbs since the beginning of the year and my goal to lose a total of 200lbs. So I keep in mind my goal and how far I've came and not to return back to being couch buddy. emoticon

I've chosen to work out at home because I enjoy the privacy and also since I don't have to physically go anywhere, It gives me little excuse not to work out. My trouble seems to stem from the fact that I work out in the a.m. after i get off work. I work 7pm to 730 am 4 days a week and some nights are tougher than others leaving me feeling physically drained when I get home. I tried working out when I get up, but i tend to sleep to the last minute leaving little to no time for working out. Although a.m. workouts have helped me be better at keeping my exercise dates, I still have days when I don't work out usually towards the end of my work week. My goal this week is to really push myself this week to put in that 30 minutes and get my workout done. I do really well on my 3 days off, one of which is a rest day, but I need more consistency.

I totally understand your dilemma.

For me, I am not a fan of working out, so it really takes an effort for me to get to the gym. I currently work out 4 days a week.

I usually go to the gym first thing in the morning - before breakfast or anything. I know myself well enough to know that if I delay the workout for later in the day, I'm usually wrapped up in something else and it's the perfect excuse for me to put off working out to another day.

I found that if I maintain my early morning routine, it really helps to keep me on track. And - since I go 4 days per week, I will start out with the weight strengthening workout and then progress to the cardio. This way - I get both types of exercise in and I'm never at the gym longer than an hour (or so).

I guess you have to find what works for you....Good luck!

Can you look in to making a walking desk? You can buy the fancy version, or you can just put a treadmill near a desk. I also do freelance writing and I walk while I work. I write on my tablet and pace circles around the house. I have a lot of phone meetings too and I walk while on the phone. I walk 5-10 miles a day doing this. It slows me down a bit- 55 wpm compared to 75 wpm if I am not walking. I actually find that I get less distracted and my ideas flow more smoothly while I am walking. The physical movement keeps my brain stimulated.

I plan my day, including fitness time, the night before. I wake up, have a cup of coffee or 2, and I am ready to go. I agree with the person who said they dress in their work out clothes each morning. It is another reminder to keep to my schedule.

emoticon getting the exercise in daily. I just don't feel good if I don't do it. I recently had an annual exam (age 51). It had been 2 years since the last one. My cholesterol, blood pressure, all the numbers were int he right place. Whereas, 2 years ago my numbers did not look good at all. I was overweight and not exercising much at that time.

Schedule in the EXERCISE - it does matter. emoticon

I try my best to get my exercise in before my day starts. I wake up, put on my gym clothes, and head to the gym. This seems to work best for me. Yesterday I didnt get to go to the gym before work so I went after, normally doesnt happen like that so I try to get it out of the way early in the day.

For me, it's a combo that works:
1. I put on workout clothes when I wake up -- don't know why, but if I have the clothes on, I tend to make myself do the workout.

2. Ditto on putting it on your schedule -- mine are actually on my calendar and I schedule things around them -- I treat those times the same as any other appt I have (because we're as important as anything else we have going on)

3. Have multiple options for yourself -- so if you can't get to a class, you can go for a walk or run...if the weather is lousy, have a few DVD/TV shows/online videos you can do

4. For sure, short workouts count, and add up. I love some of SP's 10 minute cardio videos. If you can squeeze in 3 at various times during your day when you have small chunks of time, you've done a lot for one day (and that's when having your workout clothes on comes in handy)!!

Good luck -- you'll find the combo of factors that work for you. It used to be for me that classes were a hindrance to fitting in workouts (especially when my kids were younger); now, I've paid for them, so I do them...whatever is right for you and your life.

What progress, you ask, have I made? I have begun to be a friend to myself.

Well, I know that this doesn't work for everyone's situation, but I tell myself that I spend plenty of time doing things to help others and make them feel good because I feel obligated to do so - even when I don't want to or am tired or feel like I don't have time. So why should I not treat myself the same way - why should I be any less committed to doing what is good for myself?

ETA, what I mean is, if someone I care about or respect asked me to do something to help them, I would find a way to make sure it got done. If I knew that it was important to them, I wouldn't *not* do something I said I would just because I'm in a bad mood/bored/tired/would rather be doing something else. So I try to treat myself with the same respect and do what I know is important for me without making excuses.

I've struggled with this for years... even before my kids were born (but that was because I was lazy I think...).
I am currently on my longest ever streak (almost 6 weeks) - and the only reason it has stuck this time... well, 2 reasons. #1) I have a workout buddy and we text each other if we're not working out together that day; and #2) We go BEFORE everything. On weekdays, that means 4:30am so that I am home to get ready and get the kids ready and out the door before 7:30. Weekends are a little more flexible.

Without BOTH of these, I have not succeeded in the past - I've always had one or the other, but never both at the same time.

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit. ~Aristotle~

As an added benefit, Bithoo, physical activity helps with learning and memorization. If you're walking on a treadmill or riding an exercise bike with your lines, or if you can walk/jog/bike with a recording, it might help you memorize your parts faster. Multi-tasking could save you more time later in the day.

YES! I know how it is when life gets in the way - I've got so many things going on right now it sometimes makes my head spin! My older daughter & her hubby & 2 kids had to move in with us for awhile, and she just had a baby, so there are now 8 people in the house - 3 of them pretty small. But that also means extra cooking & cleaning, and having to move my treadmill & elliptical downstairs, so space is a premium. Plus, I work and play guitar in an ensemble. Last night I was told our ensemble would play at a Church dance on Nov. 7th, so I came home and told everyone I needed to put in extra rehearsal time & wouldn't be able to cook or clean - you can imagine how well THAT went over! But if something is important to you, sometimes you have to be a little selfish, and I MEAN IT!!! I've got to block out at least 1 hour (90 min would be better) a night for rehearsals, and still try to squeeze in six 30 min exercise sessions a week as well. Something's gotta give, and with 5 adults at home SURELY we can spread some of the workload around! emoticon emoticon So tell your hubby to start helping out again!!! emoticon

The days I do not make it to the gym (ymca or rec c) I do a dvd at home with Leslie Sansone.
I have several of her dvd's. Usually twice a week I do this.

I do try to make classes at the Y on T/Th and one is---- Fitness after 50,
aerobic + strength training and the second one after that (5 min later) is Zumba Gold.
Feel great afterward and very energized.
Some other times I just go and use the bike and treadmill for at least 45 min. total. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Sounds like you have a lot of moving parts in your life, as do I (marriage, kids, job, creative pursuits). I found that the way I used to work out when I was single, or just part of a couple, doesn't work for me now.

If exercise is adding stress to my life in any way, I will not do it. I cannot tolerate an additional stressor. If exercise adds a time committment (such as driving), or one more place I have to go in a day (like the gym), I will not do it. It is not me flaking out, it is the laws of physics. I can only be in so many places in 24 hours. With my health conditions I cannot function for more than a couple of days on less than 7 hours sleep before I get pain and other symptoms flaring up. I can't afford that.

For me, finding a consistent exercise routine meant deliberately removing obstacles. These are not excuses - they are real obstacles. You can't ignore them and pretend they dont' exist, you have to adapt to them creatively.

I had to give up my idea of what exercise was "supposed" to look like, and my need to impress myself and others with an "action figure fitness girl" persona. I do nerdy, stupid, overly-simple, and "wimpy" exercise. I walk and do a bodyweight workout at home. I have been consistent for approximately 5-6 days a week, for several months. Doing that and Sparkpeople, I have lost 10 lbs and am in better shape than I have been in years. I found the exercise that matches and compliments my life.

You are a smart and creative person. The fact that certain exercise plans don't fit into your life does not make you a failure or that you have "wrong priorities". You just have to apply your creativity to this problem until you find the thing that will work for you in the long term.

If you love dance aerobics, drop-in is a great way to add fun and refresh your spirit. It doesn't have to be your main workout to still add joy to your life.

I don't belong to a gym, because I would never go there to exercise...instead I bought a treadmill & an exercise bike and I workout at home! I exercise EVERY SINGLE MORNING--7 days a week. It's how I start my day, and it keeps me healthy & energized & mentally strong! :)

I make a date with me to exercise but almost never happens. Why , I don't know sometimes.
today I had a plan to go to the gym to do stationary bike or elliptical those 2 machines were recommended to me by my orthopedic Dr. I have to do it in the morning or else it does not happen. Well, first I have to go see my sister who is not feeling well. then I had to stop by the back, then my husband call me to pick him up. That means I most prepare some lunch noon time . So I might as well eat also ., after lunch I am tired and need to rest. I felt very depress about my sister being sick . Finally we my husband and I went for a walk . then pick up something in the supermarket and that was the end of the day. Yes I did walk about 40 minutes but I don't even know if I can add to my fitness tracking . emoticon emoticon emoticon

I started a month ago , but I didn't go nowhere.
Why? I am finding everything I do tiresome and very difficult. I am trying to continue and get somewhere with my fight for a better life. My health has been going down in the last 5 years. I am 73 and recently I am experiencing quite a bit of pain with this injury of a sciatic nerve. Of course that has nothing to do with my continued to eat things are not beneficial for me. I believe depression is the cause of wanting more sweets, is my weakne

Right now if I do not walk early in the morning it never gets done. I like walking in the neighborhood and parks but it takes a lot of planning to be certain I do it.

I find it easiest to do activities I enjoy. We all try schedules, but it is not hard when you actually look forward to it.

We have a walking trail around our building at work. its exactly 3/4 of a mile. I get an hour for lunch so I walk 3 laps before eating. I have walking buddies but I enjoy a nice quiet walk by myself as well.

I message a friend that I am going to go workout because I know she will ask me how it went later and I don't want to have to say I decided to be lazy and skipped it...very motivating for me!

I have found that if I sleep in my workout clothes I'll actually work out in the morning. If I don't my lazy takes over and I won't do it.
I also have obstacles trying to keep me from working out, but I just figure it out and get it done. For example- this week I have 3 runs planned. I have a 1 yea old that HATES the stroller, so Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday I tried to run. Monday it was too windy and after about a block my baby's little cheeks were so red that I just couldn't, and Tuesday and Wednesday he just wasn't having it, after less then 5 minutes he was screaming bloody murder. So all three days I came home and just did a video while he played. It wasn't the workout I'd planned- but I still worked out. Finally today he let me jog a good 3 miles before melt-down. My other obstacle is my knee being sore the last two weeks. My favorite video is Zumba, but I can't do it right now with my knee, so I'm doing Tae-Bo and Jillian Michaels, I just have to not do the jumping moves, so during those segments I just continue whatever move was before them.

Anyways- sometimes it's easy to turn an obstacle into an excuse not to do it. We all have reasons why we can't find the time, we're all busy, have kids or jobs or pets demanding our time, get sore muscles or injuries. You've just gotta find a way to get it done, even if it's not the workout you wanted to do or the time you wanted to do it. You just have to make it a priority.

I have had to learn that if I don't keep my morning date that doens't mean my day is shot. I can still find time in the evening to do something.

If my exercise is not done by around 7 AM, it is not going to happen. Forty years ago I began running in the morning. At age 56, and after a long lung illness and knee surgery, I can't run. But I go walking around 5:30 AM, or go to the gym to lift weights or do Yoga.

There are no demands on my time before 7 AM. No one calls, no one needs a meal. No one wants me at work (usually), and no one cares what I do.

I discovered that my time was not well spent after 9 PM when I am tired. So I became an early to bed and early to rise person when I was in my mid-twenties. It was one of the best decisions I made.

I have "the heart of a teenager" according to my cardiologist. And my lungs, damaaged by pneumonia in 1989, would be significantly worse had I not done the cardiovascular aerobic exercises daily for the last four decades.

Also, exercise makes me feel good. Even as I age, and can't do as much, I am much better off for haivng done it than not.

My secret to keeping exercise dates is that it is so important that I do it first. And I do it when I know there will not be interruptions.
Good luck!

I get up at 5am to walk in the morning. It kills me sometimes--the morning after not getting to bed until 11pm--but I still go. Feeling sleepy later in the day can be dealt with very easily but the feeling of not walking is very long lasting; out of shape, doughy, cannot get with it, bloated.

I also hear you. My husband and I work full time jobs. He works nights. I work days. He is also doing the nursing program full time days. We have 2 young kids - one is 2 years and one is 4 months. We do all of this and only use a 'sitter 3 days per week. It's absolutely insane. Because he has so much studying to do and lacks sleep so often, I have picked up ALL of the household chores (inside and out). I do all of the grocery shopping and pretty much anything else that needs to be done. My son is exclusively breastfed, and won't take a bottle when I'm at work so he nurses like crazy when I'm home in the evenings and through the night. Find me a time for exercise?

My thoughts for you are: think of ALL you have to do. Now think of how it would get done if you weren't around to do it! You need to put yourself first sometimes! If you have a client that requests an early meeting, I would just explain that I have prior engagements (you don't have to say WHAT you are doing). I would discuss this with my husband and tell him that you NEED just 3 days a week (or whatever you're asking for) to take you time and become healthier. Explain that the break for exercise helps you feel better over all and in turn, helps you be a better wife, mommy and co-worker.

I think in many cases mom's often forget about themselves. We are so busy trying to please everyone else that we forget that we need to be healthy in order to be there for our family, friends and jobs.

What great suggestions. I started making dates to exercise and just saying, sorry, can't do that, I,ve got another thing on then. I hired an Exercycle and when I stopped using it, swapped it for a treadmill. Not optimal, but you an learn your lines on a cardio machine. If I miss an exercise date, I reschedule an extra slot. If that means I have to give something up, I give that up, not the exercise. Why would I duck out on exercise rather than another commitment?
I see you do acting. Act like you love exercise, and keep faking it til you make it.

I struggled with finding time to do cardio at first. Setting the weekly tracker for fitness minutes was a HUGE help for me. I schedule which days are cardio or strength and reward myself for exercise. I get to buy a new lip gloss or nail polish if I meet my goal for the week. I have a lot of nail polish!

It is easier for me to workout in the evenings, after I have cooked dinner for the family. I am usually done with my workout by 9:00 PM and in bed no later than 11:00 PM. I sleep better, too. Typically, I use the treadmill about 4 times a week for cardio and 2 days a week to warm up on strength days.

The first thing I do upon waking is workout. It's not always something huge, but I at least get in one of the videos from this site so that I do something (which is better than nothing...right? Right?! hee hee)

I also find that it helps if I plot out the things I need to do and a timeline for getting them done. That keeps me from making the excuse, 'But I have do to *x* which means I won't have time to workout!"

I found a gym close enough to walk to - that way I didn't have to deal with the stress of driving (which would always be an excuse), especially during the winter time! And the walk is a perfect warm up!

I enjoyed reading people's responses to this. For me I need to do earlier rather than later and that more often than not means getting it done in the afternoon, not the evening. By evening I can find many many excuses.
