IN DH'S FAMILY, ALL EVENTS REVOLVE AROUND FOOD. SINCE THEY ARE ALL JUNK FOOD JUNKIES AND SNACK NON-STOP, I HAVE LEARNED TO BRING WHAT I NEED TO EAT FOR MYSELF. THE FIRST FEW TIMES, THEY WERE INSULTED. NOW THEY ARE USED TO IT. PERSONALLY, I DON'T CARE WHAT THEY THINK. I HAVE TO DO WHAT'S BEST FOR ME. AND BEING A BRITTLE DIABETIC, I REFUSE TO EAT 4 DESSERTS LIKE THEY ALL DO. THEY NO LONGER COME TO OUR HOUSE TO EAT BECAUSE I COOK HEALTHY AND THEY REALLY DON'T LIKE THAT KIND OF FOOD. BUT THEY ALSO DON'T GIVE IT A CHANCE.

I try to map out my menu for the first 2 meals and then choose wisely at the function. I can usually do okay. If I save up to have more at the event I sometimes activate my triggers and then I am into a few days of excessive eating. I try to focus on the life change I am trying to achieve.

I "save up" a bit in advance by eating slightly under my calorie range for a few days. Then I eat a big salad before going to the event so I am not that hungry. Also, obviously, aim for the better choices on the menu and don't stand right next to the nibbles tray dipping in mindlessly.

I have an "event" coming up next week, but I believe it's only going to be drinks and appetizers. Since my fiance is helping to organize the event, I'll double check with him on the menu. Planning to stick to a lot of seltzer water and veggies. Doing too well to blow it on an event I'm attending mainly because it's important to my fiance!

Eat one or two apples on the way to the event- it always works for me!

Well, since there's no guarantee I won't lose control once there, I take control before. For 2 or 3 days prior to the event, I'll eat bare minimum of carbs and proteins, so I can eat with no worries. Oh, and I try to put in some extra time at the gym.

I find a outfit for the occasion if it is formal and hope when i get there they have salad fixings, fruit and veggies to eat. non-formal is no problem since most have buffets with salad. and if i can i bring my own sides and snacks. picnics and bbq's i always make my own potato, tuna mac, cole slaw or mac salad and bring my own meat to cook since i use turkey or buffalo for burgers, steaks or sausages

I am all for rewards but seem to loose the plot, and often. This time a have a real goal other than losing weight. A family house boat holiday. My next treat for my self if, no WHEN I reach 72kgs I will book into a phisio. appointment, and get rid of all these niggling pains.
Happy losses

Ahead of time, I try to pamper myself a little (hair and nails). When I am out of town, I try to drink lots of water and walk as much as I can. I try to eat well, but don't worry too much about it, because I can do better when I get home. It's hard when others have a not so great way of eating, but I just try and do the best I can under the circumstances.

I don't know if I have a big event coming up or past.
My big events every few months is go to see my children for a week or so. usually I have to travel long distance so it is quit a chore to carry all my little things that makes my life easier, medicines and clothes for maybe, deferent weathers and all those things that you have to think like (Just in case.). Not easy. After all that is taken care of it is really great. Then after the days go by and see our loved ones, well , it seems all worthwhile . emoticon emoticon

I started a month ago , but I didn't go nowhere.
Why? I am finding everything I do tiresome and very difficult. I am trying to continue and get somewhere with my fight for a better life. My health has been going down in the last 5 years. I am 73 and recently I am experiencing quite a bit of pain with this injury of a sciatic nerve. Of course that has nothing to do with my continued to eat things are not beneficial for me. I believe depression is the cause of wanting more sweets, is my weakne

Hmm...I did not realize people gave so much thought to these things! Wow. For me, all I've ever done before a "big event" (whether I was fat or skinny) was to find an outfit that fit well & that I liked & get it washed & ready to wear.

I don't change my day to day life for "events"...they're just a part of life too. I am who I am. I eat what I eat. I exercise daily--7 days a week. That keeps me healthy & strong. And as for "clean" food--yeah, last time I checked, dairy & wheat weren't "dirty"...they're actually good for you. Especially if you are trying to ward off osteoporosis.

So now I'm going to go eat some toast--white bread, thank you very much--and drink a big ole glass of skim milk before I GET ON MY TREADMILL. :) :) :)

It Is What It Is.... :)

All of the advise you have been given is great:

Eat well before and during the event
Drink 8 - 9 glasses of water a day the week before - if you don't do it already
Stay away from empty calories and soda - IT WILL BLOAT
get proper sleep
Take a brisk walk or a run to get you clear headed and glowing
If you event is at home - set your table the day before
have a guest basket in Bath - emery board, bandaids, aspirin etc... so you do not get blindsided at your own event
make a check list
pick out your clothes and make sure they are clean - ironed etc.

If you have the time and cash -
hair one week before
facial - one week before
mani/ pedi one day before - buy the bottle!!! or find a match at the store

If you do not have the cash
try out the style a few days before to see if it REALLY works
give yourself a facial a week before
give yourself a mani the day before.

RELAX - enjoy your event!

I realize the OP's event has already happened, but still wanted to address the question, since a lot of people seem to be thinking about it.

To look your best on a specific day, I think it helps to do the following for the week leading up to the event:
1. eat CLEAN. this means NO dairy, no wheat, focus on lots of protein and veggies. Certain foods definitely contribute to bloating, and while it's not going to make you lose actual fat in the last week before an event, eating this way will keep you feeling light and avoiding all bloat.
2. drink lots of water! same reason
3. get good sleep.
4. make sure to do strength training - it'll make your muscles pop a little, especially if you're closer to goal weight
5. go for a brisk walk, a run, something the day of the event.

Doing all those things will mean your skin looks good, your color will be good, and you'll look alive and awake, and feel and look as light as possible for your current weight.

Again, none of that is going to make you magically lose a bunch of weight in the last week, but it will help you look your best at your current weight.

I did the same thing for my graduation last June. My mom came east from California for it, so I made sure my hair was done the weekend before, and then the day before I had a manicure and added a pedicure because it was, after all, DC in High Summer, so I was wearing sandals and no stockings. Other than that, I made sure I drank plenty of water and had a Glucerna snack bar in the car on the way down so my blood sugar wouldn't drop too much during the four-hour ceremony.

Maintain good habits all the time, so all I have to do is streak them for the event. For example, I may exercise a little more and really watch salt to prevent bloating.

This is interesting because people seem to be addressing two different ideas here, what they do to prepare for the event and what they are going to eat at the event. I found out in February that my class reunion would be in October, a week from now. I am roughly 10 lbs from goal (lost 56 lbs) and have struggled all year with getting below the 10 lb mark, and I think that some of that has been the pressure I have put on myself about the upcoming reunion, which is stupid because I am probably about 70 lbs lighter than at my last reunion and look better than I have in about 20 years. So I decided to not weigh myself until right before I leave for the reunion...my last weigh in was in August, I think, I usually weigh myself once a month. Anyway, by not weighing myself, I can focus on whether I am eating right, etc without worrying about the number. In addition to my usual exercise, etc, one thing that I have tried this month, especially in the last week, is eating more at breakfast or lunch and making dinner my lightest meal calorically. I am less concerned about what I will eat when I am there, because I think that I'll be too excited to eat that much at the actual events. Of course, the rest of the time I'm away, I will try to do as well as I can, and definitely use the gym at the hotel..

If possible I try to determine the menu and adjust my calories and exercise over the week to compensate for the menu and then I go and enjoy myself. I also remember that there is a big event every few weeks so it is not a reason to overeat!

Lot's of good advise here! I agree with plenty of rest and water, plus good exercise. Nothing makes you look better then being well rested. And nothing makes you feel more confident then exercising regularly.

Live your life as though you are obligated to make the world a better place. Make a difference today.

Remember to laugh.

You've done a great job at investing the time and effort in getting into healthier shape. Think about how you want to feel after the wedding. Pleased for your friend? Happy that you had such a great time? OK with buckling down for a few weeks before the next big event? Stressed out because you didn't work out or watch the calories as much as you could have?

Big events are great reminders that none of us is all about weight, we're about living a good life. Cut yourself some slack, have a bite or sip of whatever you like and remember where your happiness is really coming from. Is it the food or the company? Is it celebrating or going back for seconds? If you stumble, say "whoops" and move on. No beating yourself up and no using the slip as an excuse to go off the deep end and then stay down in the depths.

The event will end and you just get back on the lifestyle that was working to get and keep you healthy. (and no crash dieting or marathon workouts just before the event - that is a formula for "crash and burn" -- you are fine just as you are today!).

Have a wonderful time!

For the few times that big events happen in my year, it really makes no difference compared to the other hundreds of days. So I don't do anything, I relax, eat and drink what I want, and completely enjoy it. I don't track at any time anyway.

I try to stay at the low end of my allowed calorie budget most days. That way I can afford an occasional treat. I actually save about 300 calories most days even though I exercise. The phone app is nice because it clearly shows your target zone and it syncs with your exercise so it adjusts as you add fitness points. Anyway, that amounts to about 2100 calories for a week. That's more than I eat daily. Plus, if you think about it, whatever day you are celebrating has its regular calorie allowance so you could eat a whole lot, if you wanted to. The trick here though is, we are trying to train ourselves to sign on for a different way of life. We need to learn to make choices. Skip the cake if you want the appetizers and a cocktail. It's all about options. When we realize we have the power to choose; we are in control. I don't know how the rest of you got the excess pounds, but I got mine by being careless and not paying attention. Gaining 5 pounds a year doesn't sound like a huge deal but after 20 years, guess what, there's 100 pounds and you have no idea where they came from. The one trick that definitely works for me is eat a high protein snack before I go to an event. Keep thinking, "I can get through this successfully". Even if you don't do as well as you hope; you didn't get where you are by eating wrong on one day. Get back on the horse the following day and push on to the finish line. Spark people are winners!

Peace be with you

Hi all. I don't have the toning problem. At 5' 4' I know that even losing 20# won't show on my body. I try to eat strictly, and I go buy larger clothes that make me look smaller. I also make sure I have make up since I rarely wear any, many times it is dried u by the time I get ready for it. I used t fast for a few days before an event, but since I am now diabetic and on insulin, I can do that

I try to get good rest, lots of exercise and eat carefully knowing I will likely overeat part of the big event time. I strategize so I don't really overdo it on the foods.

Big Event--- I'm the one planning the event most of the time. I love big family, friends, wholesome gathering. So, I'm the one cleaning, planning, decorating, looking for fun group games, the style of food for the event. Calling for my special helpers. This keeps me busy eating isn't a problem, I have to stop to eat. correctly Yes I do get exercise. emoticon

When you have a problem, drop to your knee. God will guided you though.

My "big" event is Thanksgiving. I'm going home & seeing my brother and his family for the first time in about 6 years. My parents want a family picture with everyone in it.

My plan is to look my best. I'm setting goals for myself. 1st goal is to stop gaining weight. 2nd goal: get my hair done. Hadn't thought about a mani, maybe I'll do that too. If I can get to goal one, goal 3 is to start losing weight!

I'm getting married next July and am currently freaking out about fitting into the dress! I know that I have to really up my exercise and overhaul my diet to cut down on grains/processed foods.

I like the rule, for every treat bite, take two healthy bites. You can skip the dessert table if you're going to have cake. Finish the salad and green beans and make a respectable dent in the prime rib. If you compliment the bride and her mom on how good it is, you don't have to eat it all.

Don't skip meals for 3 days before the wedding, and don't lock your knees! You aren't there to faint. Practice a good neutral face in the mirror so you don't look like you're scowling.

I use the same approaches as RENEEN86 for special events and trips. During the event, I choose the best options of what's available and don't gorge myself. You don't want to get halfway through the reception feeling like you can't even breathe in your dress! And even if it has to be an aesthetic motivator, such as not looking bloated, it helps to engrain good long term habits.

To me, it's more important to stay grounded and as focused as possible during the event. I indulge, but don't lose sight of my overall goals.

I was the MoH for my best friend's wedding a few months ago. It was the first big event for me since starting my weight loss routine. I flew to Chicago for the week and stayed with my mom and dad who...well, let's just say they don't eat the best. Right away I set realistic expectations for myself: I didn't expect to lose that week, but if I just maintained and made smart food choices I'd consider it a success. I got a lot of exercise in before leaving since I knew I'd be using my time visiting with people. I treated myself to a new pair of jeans in a smaller size! It's a good reminder of how far you've come when temptation looms. I didn't want to create a fuss, so I ate what they ate but took small portions and tried as best I could to track. I took a 20 minute walk every morning before breakfast. At the wedding reception I chose the chicken and vegetables entree over the steak and potatoes that everyone else at my table ordered. When I got home and weighed myself I was pleasantly surprised to see that I had actually lost 1 pound.

It took 14 months, but I got below my majorette weight before my reunion last year. I'm still there, 11 months later. I still track everything -every day!

Have my eyebrows threaded, get a haircut, get a mani/pedi. I don't do anything with diet/exercise because those changes take a long time. They are not quick fixes.

You don't have to eat the whole thing.

Don't put too much emphasis on drastic changes before the event; extreme measures can backfire and make you feel worse.

I usually try to eat really clean, exercise so I feel better about myself. I stay away from any foods that cause water retention in any way. Oh, you may want to put on the dress, crab the camera and see what are your most flattering angles! emoticon

Don't eat bloaty foods the day or so before, including soda.

I'm a bridesmaid in my best friend's wedding in a little over a week. I want to feel my best since I'll be in front a lot of people and of course in a lot of photos. I'm planning on drinking as much water as possible and adding a few extra strength training sessions to feel as toned as possible. Just wondering what everyone else does, exercise or diet wise, to prepare for a big event? Do you keep the same routine or add to it?
