One of the assumptions implicit in the calculator is continuous activity.
1974 calories in 4 hours is about 500 calories per hour. 250 calories in 30 minutes of strong consistent paddling is not unreasonable, but it is unlikely you could keep that rate up for 4 hours. Even if you were out on the water, I'd probably recommend scaling it back to being the equivalent 2.5-3 hours of active paddling.
The other thing to remember is that the standard convention for counting calories is to include your underlying metabolism as well, which is technically a double count. For short intense workouts, this double count is immaterial, but for 4 hours, this may represent 250 of those 1974 calories.
The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.
Seems like most everything I track, seems to be alot. I have it synced to my nutrition, which I like that feature, but since I am afraid the expenditure is inflated, I am then afraid.to increase my calories.
I still track though, I do like to keep track of my minutes, just reminds me what all I have done I guess, but I don't put too much stock in the calories burned.

I think part of the issue is that the tracker only has one option for canoeing, and only specifies speed (4 mph), not load, number of paddlers or canoe style. That said, even with 3 paddlers and a sizeable load I think 4 mph is on the faster end, especially for recreational inexperienced canoeists; the speed you go at when you've got somewhere to be (ie a campsite before dark), not when you're out for a leisurely paddle.
It's difficult to come up with accurate calorie burns when there are so many variables, and it's quite possible you were paddling at a lower intensity than the calculator assumes.
I went canoeing yesterday for 4 hours and the tracker says I burned 1974 calories! True I was paddling almost the whole time and my one shoulder was sore by the end, but I did an upper body workout Friday as well which could explain that.
That is so wrong. I just punched in 240 minutes of soccer and it says only 1394 calories burned. Mountain biking for 240 minutes is 1694 calories burned. Soccer and mountain biking are so much more intense than canoeing.
Have you noticed the tracker to be accurate?
