My favorite ever home workouts are on the xbox kinect. I like the nike trainer and the UFC fighter training. Of course, if you dont' already have an xbox, it would probably be cheaper to go to the gym so that may not exactly be helpful. In that case, I found that the Insanity videos kicked my butt. The netflix suggestion was a great one too...I will be checking that out...I didnt' even know there were workout videos on there!

@Novanoir,

There's another good idea. Exercise videos. I'll have to look at them.

If you have NetFlix, use it to check out a lot of different kinds of workouts. Personally, I don't like them. I am too uncoordinated and easily bored. So I just turn on the radio and dance up a storm in my living room. I know I look hilarious, but it makes me feel good and smile.

I dont like long videos, so my favorite is the cindy whitmarsh less is more cardio. its only 30 min, but youll feel like you did jillian micheals or insanity for an hour. Also, T25 has short effective videos, and if you want to tone up, you can do the butt bible. If I could only have one, though, Id buy the butt bible. It's really intense and I lost 5 pounds a week doing nothing else.

If you are up for a longer video, Jillian Michaels Blast fat boost metabolism still makes me cringe when I think about it. Its really, really hard. Its also good for those who get bored while working out. Its a great workout. Stephanie vitorino's body target 60 is also a great one. I think these ones are harder than insanity. Oh, and Insanity, if youre up for it, but thats expensive.

Look up exercise tv on youtube, most of the vids are on there now.

I also agree with the Leslie Sansome suggestion. Some of her videos are on youtube as well.

I have a ton of videos that if I was consistent, would have given me awesome results.

My favorites in order from hardest to do to easiest:

Stephanie Vitorino Body Target 60 (20 dollars)
Cindy Whitmarsh Ultra Fat burning workout (only 10 dollars)
Jillian Michaels Blast Fat, Boost Metabolism (only 10 dollars)
Insanity (expensive)
The Butt Bible (30 dollars but on youtube)
Cindy Whitmarsh Less is More Cardio (probably on youtube now)
T25 (expensive)
Jillian Michaels (any of her other videos except the body revolution)
Leslie Sansome (easy, but effective, and cheap, and on youtube)

My favorite exercise DVDs are by Erin O'Brien. The one I have is called Strong Body Ageless Body. You can see pieces of it on YouTube before you buy. www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnZDA0VFSSU&list=P

She's got a unique personality. I like her. emoticon

I also love to do the Cindy Crawford workout from the 1990s. I had it on VHS and now on DVD. This appears to be the full thing on YouTube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVudMzO0BZQ

Also, if you live in a metro area, there might be free Meetups (meetup.com) for fitness. I did an Insanity workout with a group at a local high school.

That is so creative, JENNYMAC ...

I used to use A Whack on the Side of the Head cards (a deck of creativity cards which has "suits" as well) to put thoughts in order for essays or presentations, but had never thought of using any kind of card deck for sequencing an exercise routine ...

I like p90x but it is quite challenging. The ones I have the most fun with are on my xbox 360 with Kinect. That being said, if you don't already have that then....it cost money too.
A great free workout I like to do that really gets the blood pumping and is a complete body workout is with a deck of cards. hearts=push ups, diamonds= crunches, spades= squats and clubs= the dreaded burpee!!! I know that's not a video but this is something you can do listening to music, or watching a fav tv program :) and you can switch it up based on area of focus. You could change squats to lunges, crunches to v-snaps, etc.

emoticon I think if you want a high intensity workout that will not only burn calories, but will tone your body too, then I would go with Bob Harper's exercise dvd's. He has all kinds, and they are not for the faint at heart!

Thanks for the tip on Fitness Blender.

Also, I just wanted to point out that everyone is at a different fitness level. After that took my cast off, I couldn't even walk. A simple house video is all I could do. If I got tired, I was right in my own house...another plus, since I also have bad knees that can collapse on me at any moment.

You don't need either a gym membership or videos--you just need FEET! Get outside & WALK! I lost 70+ lbs WALKING--never running, never doing gym workouts, just daily walking, 7 days a week. No fancy workout clothes, just shorts/sweatpants & t-shirts/sweatshirts.

Just GET ACTIVE & you'll see results!

Someone recommended the "You are Your Own Gym" series below. I agree. I especially like the book. Very fact based, straight forward and educational.

There's always the "Deck of Cards" workout. Google it if you are not familiar with it...basically one exercise for each suit of cards, and you flip through the deck doing them!

If you want challenges, ANYTHING by The Firm for intermediate-intense.

Anything by Denise Austin or Kathy Smith is good for beginners-intermediates.

If you like to do anything in the kickboxing/martial arts area, Billy Blanks Tao Bo series (he's got a lot of new stuff to check out).

Also, Tracy Anderson's Metamorphosis system. I started seeing results after one week of this, BUT it is intense. I had to stop though because I have a torn labrum (NOT resulting from this workout) so my range of motion is limited on my left leg. If this system is out of your budget, I recommend her post-pregnancy workout (even if you have not had children). It has the highest multiple ratings of any workout DVD I have ever seen.

I own and have done them all. I have belonged to gyms in the past and have worked with wonderful trainers, but I have gotten the best results with these because of my insane work/travel schedule. When the TV and DVD player is right there, you don't have any excuses NOT to do something, even for 20 minutes.

If you are strapped for cash but have cable, there are all sorts of exercises on the 'on demand' channels (not to be confused with the 'in demand' channels that you have to pay for--on-demand is free).

But remember, your weight is 80% what you eat and 20% exercise so you need to eat well and not rely on exercise to do all the heavy lifting.

I really like to use my Zumba dvds. They were a little on the expensive side though. I also really love my Biggest Loser dvd, I have the At Home Challenge one. Then of course there is Coach Nicole's workout dvd which I also really like. I think it depends on what you like to do. I have tried lots of workout videos I did not like.

If you don't want or can't go out and buy a bunch of workout dvd's like me, use your computer.

There are tons of videos on youtube. Sparkpeople has a lot of really good videos as well.

Also, you can borrow exercise videos from the library, that way, you can see if you like it first instead of wasting money on something you didn't like.

I feel like I'm a home workout expert LOL! I've done so many workout DVDs and now even have a Wii Fit Plus that I really like, especially for yoga and Zumba.

Tae Bo: This has been my all-time favorite, even to this day! I love the Live and Get Ripped series (the Advanced is a butt kicker!). I still do these as a cross-training workout on the days when I don't run.

Zumba for Wii and Zumba Core: I just got the Core workout, and it's fun, adds a little bit more focused moves than the Zumba II workout. Zumba II I love, love, LOOOOOOVE!! The classes range from twenty minutes to 45 minutes to and hour, and each one really feels like you're in an actual Zumba class at a gym. I feel like it's a great substitute if you don't have a gym membership.

Jillian Michaels: I have her 30 day shred series, and I'm loving it as a strength/cardio circuit on the days when I jog/walk for shorter distances. She includes a lot of plank/push-up/squat/lunges/ab work too along with good cardio. I'm going to try out her Shred It With Weights very soon.

The Power 90 Sculpt series is a good strength building circuit. I remember building some nice upper body strength with that set a few years ago as well.

I picked up a CorePower Yoga DVD at Target on a whim and its become one of my favorite exercise DVDs for home.

Its straight-forward. The exercises are simple enough for a beginner but are challenging enough for the more experienced (you can always elevate your practice and they give clear examples how to do that). You can do one of the 3, 20 minute sections or put them all together. Also, there is a bonus section at the end that is about 8 minutes long, a nice little ab blast.

Don't be fooled by the yoga in the title, this workout will make you sweat and burn calories! It will also vastly improve your strength and balance with repeated use.

I like Leslie Sansone's Walk Away The Pounds. I found one of her books, with a CD, at the library and gave it a try. Over time, I've purchased ten or twelve CDs, trading the older ones in for credit toward new ones.

My preferences are either fitnessblender.com or fitsugar.com. They have tons of workouts for strength/cardio/yoga, etc. I access these on my computer and use my laptop/ipad or find a way to hook my laptop up to my TV so its bigger. I also subscribe to HULU for TV shows and they have workout videos on there!

Hi! It may sound cheesy (and even embarrassing) but, Hip Hop Abs. Shawn T is hilarious and keeps me motivated. W/ several different workouts, it keeps me interested and also they all vary in length, depending on what kind of time I have to spare. No bad for $30.

I'm sure this one has been said, but I like 30 Day Shred by Jillian Michaels. I go to the gym regularly, but on days when I don't feel like it but still want to get a workout in - I do this. It's 20 minutes and is a full body workout. There are 3 Levels, but I have mainly stuck with Level 1. After doing it a few times, you definitely feel stronger. At some point when I won't have the time for the gym as often (when I eventually have children), I'll probably try all 3 Levels for the 30 days. Either way, it's still really good.

I followed up myself and found out that the original woman on Bodyrock tv has split off and is doing her own thing. She goes by ZuzkaLight. www.zuzkalight.com/ She still wears very revealing workout outfits, but apparently, the videos are not shot with so much emphasis on buns and breasts. A review by another trainer says the workouts are still very good, there's less emphasis on equipment, and her explanations and cueing are better than her replacement on the old Bodyrock. TV, which is still happening, and also recommended. Zuzka Light has some free stuff, but now her weekly videos are about 10 bucks a month, or less, if you buy more months at a time. I think she started charging so that she can keep to depending on less equipment sales, as the old site has lots of expensive equipment used in the workouts and sold on the site.

In any case, I hope this helps someone.

Tamilee Webb has a video called "I Want That Body" which is a compilation of the exercises she recommends in separate series that target different body parts. They are all low impact. They may not burn a lot of calories, but they do work those muscles! When I've used it consistently in the past, even when I definitely carried extra weight and fat, people noticed a difference in my shape (a rounder bottom, to be exact!) So this one, or any of her series on body parts, would be useful, I would say, to supplement walking or other aerobic workouts.

As others have said, there are tons of free workouts available on Spark and youtube. One of them is bodyrock.tv, but that might be too hard. That woman, Zuzana, is incredibly fit; I find I get too body crazy when I watch too much of that kind of stuff, and since I've had an eating disorder, it's not the best idea for me, but your case could be different.

Stay moving!

I successfully used my workout recording, complete with cueing; a more spontaneous sequence (because I was "on") and all that stuff that I forget to think about when I am working out alone to music.

In addition, a lot of the workout is yoga, so I put verbiage in there! To keep me motivated.

This takes the place of music, which even if not "danced to" in a more precision-timed (to the music) workout - has a short shelf-life and gets old. Had to by a CD rack for all the music I'd gone through.

No disrespect intended to the artists, of course... I have very recently learned from the best, as I attest to in part, downthread ... but I also took a large handful of live classes that I stole from, mixed and matched .. (alienating a couple of yoga teachers in the process, but that's another story for another time)

But were we talking "economical" ... this is one way to do it ...

I'm SO economical, I could not get something to record, which was Bluetoothⓡ -enabled. So, this rules out vigorous cross-training type stuff where you move around across yards of distance, fast ... but I don't DO those types of workouts (live in the big city with NO space, even if I were) ...

For some reason, ATT Uverse seems to have dropped the free exercise videos. They were great! The often offered Leslie Sansone.

I don't know what cable company you have, but I have Cablevision, AKA Optimum Online. If you go into the menu where they have rentals and pre-recorded prime time programs, there is an "Entertainment" heading, you can click on that, then "Magazine Rack," then they have free workout videos that rotate monthly.

Keeps things interesting and nice that it's free, with my cable package.
