" you have to take in more calories then you burn off to live a healthy life."

Not true. If you're trying to lose weight you need to take in fewer calories than you burn off; to maintain you take in the same number. Only if you are attempting to gain weight do you need to take in more calories than you expend.

However, I'm not sure what you mean by "no one can live on only 365 calories a day". I mean, yes, you need to be eating more than that, but why would your consumption need to be so low? Even your BMR - how many calories you burn simply existing - should be much higher than that, unless you've got other health problems you haven't mentioned.

Do get a second opinion, and do look into chair workouts that won't put stress on your leg.

I agree that a second opinion would be valuable.

However, since you also mention that you need surgery for one of your legs, you might also want to look into exercises you can do while seated. There are several recommendations here: www.sparkpeople.com/resource/fitness_artic

ESHARA43, that's a tough question. It's difficult for us to countermand a doctor's orders here, because we don't know enough of your medical history. However, I see nothing wrong with encouraging you to seek out a second opinion. Is this surgeon a weight management specialist?

The benefits of exercise are about more than just burning calories to "remove" food (seriously, 1 slice of bread? What a silly comparison.) It's about heart health, strengthening your body, and more.

I strongly encourage you to seek out a second opinion, from another doctor. It sounds like you have many other health issues at play.

I had an appointment with my surgeon last week and this is what he told me to do. Sit on my butt and do no exercise or walk on my treadmill because it wont help me so who is right, the nutritionist or the surgeon. I dont know what to do anymore because I love walking but the doctors said that if i walk its 400 lbs more pressure on my legs and i would only burn 1 slice of bread in calories. I am going over his head and doing what I think is right. The doctor is a pain in the butt because he doesnt want to do the surgery on my leg so I can walk normal again without pain.

I got on my treadmill today and I walked for 15 minutes and burned off 123 calories so far. i am taking it one day at a time and doing it my way instead of listening to a surgeon who doesnt know what he is talking about, the way i see it no one can live on only 365 calories a day because it is impossible to do because you have to take in more calories then you burn off to live a healthy life. am i right or am i wrong. emoticon

Hi everyone. Sorry I have been absent for a while but I was depressed because I couldnt exercise when I wanted to. I am back on track now and I finally have my treadmill back so I will be walking 3 times day and posting my steps for everyone to see. I am so happy now and I will be back in more often. I miss you all so very much. wish me luck
