Honestly, because you're under financial strain, I would skip the gym entirely. You don't need one to lose weight. You can compose a completely free (or low cost) program with no or limited equipment. A set of resistance bands is completely versatile, and usually costs less than $20.
If you're not already exercising regularly, there's no real reason signing a contract will spur you to do so.
While exercise helps weight loss, it's really about the food you eat. If you are overeating, you'll have trouble losing weight, even if you exercise. Are you tracking, weighing and measuring accurately? Or are you guessing at what you're entering (or not tracking at all, and just "watching" what you eat?)
