I love group ex classes...in fact I loved them so much that when I was in college, I became an instructor! But you have to make sure to find the right class..the instructor has to be good and motivating! I love taking Body Pump classes (my favorite), I also do some pilates classes, kickboxing classes, and will spin once in a while. If your gym carries Les Mills classes (body pump is part of that company) I would definitely take them. They are always structured so well and do a great job making sure every instructor is great! Try a bunch of different ones out and see which you like best!
I think that since you're asking, you're interested enough to try it! Since it's through school, is it offered at low/no cost? That's even more awesome, and definitely worth checking out. And if you go and decide it's not for you, no harm done.

you pretty much see the same people, so (as others have said) they ask where you were when you miss a class.
And (for me anyway) I won't push myself as hard when I exercise on my own. I'm not likely to walk out before the class is over, so I'm committed to a 60 min workout. At home, if I'm doing a DVD and just not feeling it, I'll quit.
I used to HATE group classes. I felt like I didn't fit in and people would stare at me. I started Zumba and I felt at home and now I really enjoy most group classes. There are times I like to just be alone and walk or do the elliptical and zone out, but I think group classes make the time go by so much faster. Especially if it's something you like.

Even though I'm studying to be a personal trainer, I love group exercise classes. I believe group exercise classes are great motivators. I'm a group fitness instructor and I love keeping my classes motivated and accountable. I also like to attend other classes such as Zumba and Total Body to get in other people's workouts.

I was taking a spin bike class on Wednesdays at the gym which I loved but they don't teach it any more. I do take Group Power weight lifting class 3 days a week I so do love that. They push me in a way I like. If I were you I'd try a class. I love mine. Like minded people taking the same class motivates me to push harder.

I have always loved group classes, enough that when my gym stopped offering the ones I liked at the time I preferred, I quit going! I can always push myself a bit harder with a group, and when you don't show up, they ask questions and are accountability buddies. :)
Not everyone is the same, though; give it a try, and see if you like it!
